2019 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan Review: The Middleweight Knockout

by Jay Traugott

Mercedes-Benz' middle-weight boxer is in the best shape its ever been, and it's ready to take the fight to its arch-rivals,the BMW 5 SeriesandAudi A6. The fifth generation E-Class V6 model gains more power for 2019 - 33 horsepower and 15 pound-feet of torque to be exact - and both the 2.0-liter and V6 models deliver brisk performance. Out on the road, the traditionally dull midsize sedan has tightened things up considerably, and might just be the best driving German we've tested in this class. Fuel economy is comparable with rivals, and inside, the E-Class feels special; it is well put together, and the overall design is more emotive than what you'll find in the more tech-focused Audi, or cool and collected BMW. Safety features on the 2019 car include standard emergency brake assist and driver attention assistance, and Mercedes-Benz will back new owners with a four-year/50,000-mile basic warranty. Starting at $53,500, the E-Class offers an attractive package, and has managed to outclass its competitors. For now.

2019 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan Changes:What’s the difference vs 2018 E-Class Sedan?

The fifth-generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class has been around since 2017, and 2019 sees the brand's midsize luxury sedan gaining more improvements to the interior as well as under the hood. For 2019, the E 400, the only V6 powered model in the range, is replaced by the E 450, which gains 33 horsepower and 15 pound-feet of torque. On the inside, the 2019 model sports a redesigned steering wheel, which gives the already stunning cabin a fresh feel. Both the E 300 and E 450 share the majority of their features; both get 12.3-inch infotainment displays with navigation, Bluetooth streaming as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 2019 E-Class boasts a Top Safety Pick Plus rating from the IIHS, but then, so do its competitors, the BMW 5 Series and Audi A6. Starting at $53,500, the E-Class is competitively priced and offers a more emotive driving experience than the 5 Series and A6.

Pros and Cons

  • It's got one of the best interiors in its class
  • Massive options list
  • There's more power on tap for the E 450
  • Semi-autonomous driving tech
  • Cramped cargo capacity
  • Low-speed comfort feels compromised
  • The infotainment system isn't the best
  • Optional extras can add up quickly

E-Class Sedan Exterior

The swooping design of the W213 generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class still looks great despite having been around since 2017; it shares its elegant design with the smallerC-Class. There have been no exterior changes for 2019, which means you get the same standard 18-inch five-spoke wheels on the E 300 and a set of 18-inch twin five-spoke wheels on the newly introduced E 450. The E-Class lights the way through the dark with a set of LED headlights and taillights, and features LED daytime running lights. Other exterior features include a power tilt-and-slide sunroof as well as rain-sensing wipers. Optional exterior extras include AMG derived body styling bits on the E 450 and Air Body Control AMG performance suspension.

Dimensions

The E-Class has been the traditional midsize luxury sedan offering from Mercedes Benz, and over the years has evolved in shape and size but always keeps its dimensions in line with its main rivals, the BMW 5-Series and Audi A6. Total length is measured at 193.8 inches, compared to the 194.6-inch BMW 5 Series and the 194.4-inch Audi A6. Max width, including side mirrors, comes to 81.3 inches, and the 2019 E-Class sits 57.8 inches tall. The midsize executive rolls on a 115.7-inch wheelbase, slightly longer than the Audi A6, but 1.4 inches shorter than the BMW. The lightest E-Class is the rear-wheel-drive E 300, with a total curb weight of 3,792 pounds, which is 79 pounds heavier than the base 5 Series. The heaviest model on offer is the 4Matic E 450 with a total curb weight of 4,134 lbs.

Exterior Colors

The E-Class has a particular reputation to uphold; as the go-to luxury sedan for middle managers and retired East Coast weekend golfers, it has to keep its shirt tucked and tie straight. The color palette for 2019 reflects that image perfectly, and the nine colors on offer give new buyers the option of going for classics such as Black, Polar White or Iridium Silver Metallic. For those who want to go for that under the radar look, Dune Silver Metallic, Emerald Green Metallic, and Lunar Blue Metallic are good options. Mercedes-Benz also offers a few select colors in the form of designo Cardinal Red Metallic, Diamond White Metallic, and Selenite Gray Magno, a type of matte silver. If it was up to us, Iridium Silver would do just fine.

E-Class Sedan Performance

Performance has typically taken a back seat in the E-Class, which traditionally places its focus on passenger comfort and ride quality rather than all-out acceleration, and barring the manic AMG models; the recipe remains the same. For 2019, Mercedes-Benz has replaced the E 400 with the E 450, while the E 300 remains unchanged. The base model is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and sprints to sixty in 6.2 seconds (6.3 seconds in AWD configuration), closely matching its main competitors in terms of engine power and performance. The more powerful E 450 gets its power from a twin-turbocharged V6 engine, which produces 33 horsepower and 15 pound-feet of torque more than its predecessor, and feels significantly faster than the base model. With 362 hp behind the gas pedal, the E 450 will sprint to sixty in only five seconds. Both engines offer good performance, and even the smaller four-cylinder car will surprise new drivers with its seamless torque delivery, making highway merging a cinch.

Engine and Transmission

Powering the 2019 E-Class are two engines, both encouraged by some forced induction. E 300 models come fitted with turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engines featuring direct fuel injection and produce 241 hp and a healthy 273 lb-ft of torque. Mated to the range standard 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission, the E 300 makes light work of most driving demands, and thanks to a wide torque band and seamless gear changes, it makes the baby E-Class feel faster than what the official figures indicate. The new E 450 makes use of the same 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 that was used in the 2018 E 400, but now pushes out 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. Those figures make for a deceptively quick car; thanks to a well-insulated cabin and a comfortable suspension setup on high-speed roads and highways, the E 450 will get up to jail-time speeds faster than you'd think. The 9G-TRONIC transmission once again impresses with well-planned ratios and imperceptible shifts. For the majority of E-Class buyers, the smaller 2.0-liter engine will offer more than enough power for day to day driving.

Handling and Driving Impressions

The E-Class has never been thought of as a fun, or driver-focussed car, but rather as a composed and comfortable thing that does what is asked of it - but nothing more. The 2019 car puts that stereotype to bed. What you get with the latest car is a composed ride that keeps things in check around tight and fast corners without breaking a sweat. The steering feels well-balanced in comfort mode, which we found to be the best bet for in town and fast country road or highway driving, while the sport mode made the steering artificially heavy and didn't add to the road feel. Sport Plus mode should be reserved for emergencies such as escaping Mexican drug cartel ambushes. For years the E-Class has lagged behind the BMW 5 Series and Audi A6 in terms of its dynamic capability, but not so anymore: it might even be better.

E-Class Sedan Gas Mileage

For a car with a curb weight hovering around the 4,000 lbs mark, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is quite the economy car. The most fuel-efficient car in the range is the RWD E 300: with its 241-hp engine and a curb weight of 3,792 lbs, the E 300 will return a figure of 21/30/25 mpg city/highway/combined but is outclassed by the BMW 530i Sedan which gets 24/34/27 mpg. The AWD E 300 sees that number drop to 21/29/24 mpg. Surprisingly, the E 450 with its twin-turbocharged V6 engine returns an impressive 20/28/23 mpg, lagging slightly behind the similarly powerful BMW 540i xDrive, as well as the 3.0-liter Audi A6's 22/29/25 mpg. With a fuel tank capacity of between 17.4 and 21.1 gallons, the E-Class has an estimated maximum range of between 435 and 506 miles.

E-Class Sedan Interior

执行德国豪华轿车通常生产erized by their logical, bordering on clinical, interior designs, but Mercedes-Benz offers something a bit more emotive and timeless in the E-Class: flowing contours and elegantly placed instruments give you the sense that you're sitting inside something more akin to a 1920s speedboat than a modern midsize sedan. The 2019 E-Class' interior offers an ageless experience, unlike that of the hyper futuristic Audi A6 or the straight-laced BMW. Standard interior features include a redesigned three-spoke steering wheel with Nappa leather trimmings, power tilt adjustment, and rear-mounted shift paddles. Interior temperatures are regulated by a dual-zone automatic climate control system, and the whole space is lit up by 64-color ambient LED lighting. A universal garage door opener is also included.

Seating and Interior Space

The power-adjustable front seats are clearly designed to offer the maximum amount of comfort, but offer impressive levels of support for a non-AMG car, thanks to a deep bucket design with large side bolsters; and, for those who need some de-stressing, Mercedes-Benz offers optional hot stone massage functionality. Seats in the back take on a more traditional bench-style layout, but, excluding the fifth passenger seat, still, offer decent side support. In the front, occupants get a generous 41.7 inches of legroom, besting the BMW's 41.4 inches and the Audi A6' 41.3 inches. Front headroom comes in at 37.3 inches, meaning even tall drivers won't have any issues getting in and out of the E-Class sedan. In the rear, occupants are greeted with 36.2 inches of legroom, which is the least when compared to the 36.5 inches offered by the BMW, and the 37.4 inches offered in the Audi A6. Rear headroom is measured at a decent 38.2 inches, more than both the BMW and Audi.

Interior Colors and Materials

室内材料和颜色的选择参考lect the E-Class' timeless exterior and overall genteel personality. Both the E 300 and E 450 come standard with MB-Tex seat upholstery, which is a faux-leather type material that feels every bit as good as the real thing, but you can opt for regular, Nappa or designo Nappa leather at extra cost. Leather upholstery can be had in an impressive 14 variants, including the classic all-black or more exotic combinations such as Saddle Brown and Black, or Macchiato Beige and Yacht Blue. MB-Tex, Dinamica, and Nappa seats are eligible for black leather with red stitching, while the exclusive Nappa leather seats get Silver stitching. Trim materials run the full gambit of textures and finishes; you can go for Aluminum or AMG carbon fiber for a sportier look, but the traditionalist will go for Burl Walnut or natural grain Brown Ashwood.

E-Class Sedan Trunk and Cargo Space

Automakers have to strike a fine balance between passenger and cargo space, with passengers usually taking preference in this class. The E-Class doesn't offer the most rear legroom when compared to the A6 and 5 Series, although it's quite spacious up front - yet it has the smallest trunk, measuring only 13.1 cubic feet. The Audi offers 13.7 cubic feet and the BMW a massive 18.7 cubic feet. The 40/20/40 split-folding rear seats do help to open up a bit more space. With the rear seats in the upright position, the E-Class will comfortably fit enough luggage for three salesmen's short business trip out to Bakersfield. Molded side door pockets, a split center console, and a fairly-sized glovebox provide ample storage for small items in the cabin.

E-Class Sedan Infotainment and Features

Features

The E-Class will need you to check some boxes on the options list if you want a truly luxurious experience, as the basic offering can seem scant to some. Standard exterior features include full LED lighting with LED daytime running lights, heated and powered side mirrors with auto-dimming on the driver's side mirror, as well as SmartKey keyless entry and start, and rain-sensing window wipers. Inside, you get power-adjustable front seats with three-position memory wrapped in faux-leather, a power tilt and slide sunroof, as well as dual-zone automatic climate control and a 64-color, LED interior lighting system. Advanced features such as wireless phone charging, a heated front armrest, and cabin air purification are all available as optional extras.

Infotainment

The E-Class features futuristic touch-sensitive steering wheel controls and a large 12.3-inch infotainment display, and with tech features galore, this mid-sized executive brings its A-game. The COMAND system makes use of a touchpad, rotary dial, and steering wheel controls to flip through menus in a seamless and responsive fashion, and users can also make use of the enhanced voice control system, which picks up on most accents. Standard infotainment system features include navigation with three years of free map updates as well as live traffic updates. Bluetooth streaming, two USB ports, and optional wireless phone charging are also thrown into the mix, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The standard sound system includes a bass booster in the front and delivers a punchy audio experience, but the optional Burmester surround sound system is the one to go for if you're serious about your music.

E-Class Sedan Problems and Reliability

For a German engineered car, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class has suffered from surprisingly many recalls in the past two years. In 2018 alone, there were ten recalls, although not all issues related to the sedan variants. Notable recalls for 2019 include an emergency braking failure and steering rack issues. Mercedes-Benz covers the E-Class with a four-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, which includes corrosion and drivetrain cover as well as roadside assistance. Audi and BMW offer superior warranties, which include maintenance plans and 12-year corrosion warranties.

E-Class Sedan Safety

With a huge amount of standard and available active driver safety features, the 2019 E-Class is one of the safest midsize sedans on the road. The NHTSA gave the 2018 model a full five out of five stars, but more importantly, the 2019 car managed to bag a Top Safety Pick Plus award from the IIHS. Cars competing in this class can't afford to deliver anything but the best safety records: the Audi A6 and BMW 5 Series both managed to score Top Safety Pick Plus awards, too.

NHTSA safety ratings are not available at this time.

Key Safety Features

Standard safety features on the E-Class are generous, but to get up to Top Safety Pick Plus standard, you should consider ticking some of the optional safety features. Standard on the 2019 car is rain-sensing window wipers, LED headlights, a rearview camera, as well as emergency brake assist, driver attention assistance, hill start assist, and a seven airbag system amongst others. The optional premium package adds blind-spot monitoring, but the driver assistance package is where the really good stuff resides. Select this package, and you'll get active distance assist, lane change assistance, cross-traffic alert, evasive steering assist, rear collision detection, as well as active parking assistance, and route-based speed adaptation.

Verdict:Is the 2019 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan a good car?

The market for midsize premium luxury sedans has been steadily shrinking with most people favoring large luxury SUVs - but those who appreciate the combination of space, pace, and luxury offered by these types of cars will surely come in contact with an E-Class while on the hunt for a new car. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class offers slight updates for 2019, including a redesigned steering wheel, and a power boost from the turbocharged V6 engine, making an already accomplished package even more appealing. Power from both the four-cylinder and V6 is impressive, especially when combined with seamless shifts from the 9G-TRONIC auto transmission. The E-Class also drives beautifully, and for once feels better balanced and more capable than both the A6 and 5 Series. Inside, the Mercedes offers a tasteful and emotive experience that is further enhanced by an impressive infotainment system. In terms of safety, the E-Class, sits at the top of the class, alongside its German associates the A6 and BMW 5 Series. Limited trunk space and an unimpressive warranty count against it, but these issues are a small price to pay for driving one of the best midsize sedans in recent history.

What's the Price of the 2019 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan?

Competition is rife in this class, so the pricing and standard features will play a big role in the purchasing decision. The 2019 E-Class starts off with an MSRP of $53,500 for the entry-level E 300 RWD Sedan, climbing to $56,000 for the 4MATIC AWD version. The new E 450 4MATIC will cost you $59,950, excluding destination fees. The Audi A6, by comparison, starts off at $54,100, slightly more expensive than the E-Class, while a 3.0T Prestige quattro AWD will set you back $58,900. The BMW 5 Series starts with an MSRP of $53,400, $100 less than the E-Class, and climbs in price to $61,250 for a mid-range 540i xDrive Sedan, while the AMG-rivalling M550i xDrive Sedan will set you back $74,450. Expect the E-Class to reach well into the $90k mark when you get a bit carried away with the optional extras.

2019 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan Models

The 2019 range consists of the E 300, E300 4Matic, and E 450; the E 450 replaces the E 400 for the current year.

The E 300 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine producing 241 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque, and sends its power to the rear or all four wheels via a 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission. Standard exterior features include LED lighting, rain-sensing window wipers, and hands-free keyless access. The E 300 shares its power seats with three setting memory with the E 450 as well as its power-tilting sunroof and more.

The E 450 is powered by a bi-turbo 3.0-liter V6, which produces 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque and sends its power to all four wheels via the same nine-speed auto as found in the E 300. The E 450 is fitted with all the basic features found on the E 300, and has access to all of the same optional packages.

Additional Packages

53500美元的基本模型是12月的要价eptive, to say the least: Mercedes-Benz offers a vast amount of optional extras, most of which provide genuine value, and so will naturally look very attractive to potential buyers. We would suggest looking at the driver assistance package, which adds important active driver safety features such as active distance and steering assistance, lane change assist and emergency forward braking as well as emergency stop assist, active lane-keeping, route-based speed adaptation, and a surround-view camera system - it costs $2,250. Nice to haves would be the cracking Burmester 3D surround sound system and the head-up display system at $5,400 and $990 respectively. For those who want a bit more exclusivity, go for the AMG-Line exterior package, which adds 18-inch AMG five-spoke wheels, a sports brake system (standard on the E 450), and a black headliner at $500.

What Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan Model Should I Buy?

The 2019 E-Class in any configuration is an amazingly capable car that balances its executive duties as a professional sedan for business types, while offering an entertaining driving experience, good levels of technology, and an excellent safety record. The list of standard equipment includes LED lighting, automatic climate control, emergency braking, and a 12.3-inch infotainment display. The fact that the E 300 and E 450 share most of the same basic features and are both eligible for the same optional packages means the purchasing decision will boil down to how much power you'd like behind your right foot. The 241-hp four-pot in the E 300 delivers good low to midrange punch and feels brisk around town and on the open road, but the biturbo V6 just gives you more, everywhere in the rev range, and turns the E-Class into a real stealth bomber. With a price difference of $6,450, we would stretch for the E 450 just because we loved the extra power - but if you only care about the luxury and comfort, the E 300 will work just as well.

2019 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan vs BMW 5 Series Sedan

第七代宝马5系依然relatively unchanged for 2019, which means you still get one of the most capable midsize luxury sedans on the market. In base form, the 5 Series is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 248 hp and 258 lb-ft and will return an impressive 24/34/27 mpg city/highway/combined. The E 450-rivaling 540i sedan is powered by a comparable 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 producing 335 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque, which is considerably less than the E-Class, but delivers a better 21/29/24 mpg city/highway/combined - and is quicker too. The 5 Series is a larger car overall and offers more interior space and significantly more trunk space. In terms of interior, both display fine German craftsmanship, but the Mercedes-Benz E-Class feels more emotive when compared to the cool and calculated space of the BMW. Around town, the Mercedes is arguably the more balanced car when driving hard, but both offer equally good driving experiences when driving civilly. The BMW matches the Merc in terms of safety and offers a better warranty. It's a tight one, but we'd go for the E-Class, just because of its warmer personality.

2019 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan vs Audi A6

The Mercedes E-Class is on the back foot here; the 2019 Audi A6 has been completely redesigned for 2019 with a new infotainment system and drivetrain options. The base model is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine producing fractionally more horsepower at 248 hp, with matching torque figures of 273 lb-ft, which gets the A6 24/32/27 mpg city/highway/combined, beating the Merc. The 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 in the 3.0T quattro delivers 335 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque and sees the economy figure drop to 22/29/25 mpg. The A6 is sized similarly to the E-Class, but inside it offers superior passenger space and slightly more generous trunk space. As with the BMW, the A6 offers a well-balanced package that leans towards the cutting edge tech look and feel. On the road, the A6 feels more choppy, and in base form, doesn't impress as much in terms of power delivery. The A6 is just as safe, scoring a Top Safety Pick Plus from the IIHS, but offers a superior warranty. Get the A6 if you're into the futuristic look, or go for the Mercedes-Benz if you prefer some old-world charm with the performance to match.
