2021 Jeep Wrangler Review: A Living Classic

Few cars so perfectly embody the ideals of freedom and capability as the 2021 Jeep Wrangler. There is almost nowhere this rugged, off-road warrior can't go, with its excellent ground clearance and wading depth. There are a couple of engines available to the Wrangler SUV, but the old-school Pentastar V6 is still your best bet for straight-up power. It develops a respectable 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, but it's quite unrefined compared to the competition. However, while you may find more power under the hood of theLand Rover DefenderorMercedes-Benz G-Class, as well as much more premium cabins, they just don't have the playful and charming spirit of the small Jeep. When it comes to 2-door SUVs that can tackle anything you throw at them, the 2021 Wrangler is a hard one to pass up.

2021 Jeep Wrangler Changes:What’s the difference vs 2020 Wrangler?

The 2020 model year saw a few substantial changes to the Jeep Wrangler lineup, so there are only a few updates for 2021. Most of these are optional, such as the available TrailCam forward-facing camera and 8.4-inch touchscreen. The Sport gets access to the Selec-Trac two-speed transfer case and full-time 4x4, while Rubicon trims can opt for the extreme Rock-Trac 4x4 with a 4:1 low-range. Standard additions include two additional USB charging ports, and the Off-road Plus package for the Rubicon. If you upgrade to the 8.4-inch touchscreen, you get a tire pressure monitoring system gratis. Special edition models for the new year include the Islander, 80th Anniversary Edition, and Willys Sport.

Pros and Cons

  • Unmistakable Jeep styling
  • Nearly unparalleled off-roading skills
  • Removable doors and roof
  • Plenty of aftermarket customization
  • The new turbo four-pot offers good fuel economy
  • Less than stellar on-road comfort
  • Abysmal safety rating
  • Not a lot of standard driver assists

引擎and Transmission

As has been the case for decades now, the standard engine under the hood of the 2021 Jeep Wrangler is a Pentastar 6-cylinder unit, displacing 3.6 liters of gasoline to develop 285 hp and 260 lb-ft. To try and offset its terrible drinking problem, Jeep offers a mild-hybrid version of this powerplant, with a 48-volt electric motor serving as a starter generator and ancillary power source. The plain engine comes mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, while the eTorque variant relies on an 8-speed automatic.

If you aren't a fan of roaring V6s or you actually care about the environment, you may want to consider the 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. It nearly matches the V6 with 275 hp but surpasses it with 295 lb-ft of torque. This motor has to be paired with the 8-speed auto. Regardless of powertrain and transmission, every Wrangler is equipped with a four-wheel drivetrain, but whether it is part- or full-time depends on trim and options. Properly equipped, the Wrangler has a maximum towing capacity of 2,000 lbs.

Verdict:Is the 2021 Jeep Wrangler a good SUV?

How we answer this question depends entirely on how it is asked. The Wrangler SUV is not for everyone or for everything. Sure, it looks good, if you're into that retro-style chunky high-rider, and many people only want it for this reason. This is because the moment people see this vehicle, they think of a lifestyle of adventure. Even though it's now in its fourth generation, the Wrangler looks mostly the same as it always has, and even makes use of a classic V6 engine. While this gives it a great off-roading performance, it is unrefined around town, and the transmission options don't really do it any favors. Everything about this Jeep is old-fashioned and that works for it in many ways, but it is a disadvantage in just as many

Newer cars like theFord Bronco Sport一样能够在冒险的爸爸吗th, but they have far more modern features and do a much better job of doubling up as daily town cars. Considering how popular this segment is in the USA, competition is fierce and the Wrangler just isn't doing enough to stay relevant. The NHTSA and IIHS review of the 2021 Jeep Wrangler show that it falls behind in terms of safety. Furthermore, it has limited standard features and its reliability is subpar. All that said, if the singular thing you care about is off-roading, you can't go wrong with this SUV. But, if you want even the smallest degree of versatility, you could do better.

What Jeep Wrangler Model Should I Buy?

It's best to disregard any of the special edition models, unless they really speak to you since they bring little to the table aside from unique badging and some decals. Instead, you can take two routes when choosing. The base Sport is a great starting point for buyers who want to be creative with their Wrangler and customize it post-purchase. It's also the only 2021 Jeep Wrangler SUV with a price below $30,000. If you'd rather have a pre-built off-road specialist, the Rubicon is the clear winner. Regardless of the direction you choose, it is highly recommended that you opt on all the available safety and driver-assist features, since the Wrangler is so sparsely outfitted as standard.
