Bugatti Chiron Convertible Won't Happen

There's a good reason why you haven't seen aChiron convertibleyet. Bugatti isn't going to build one. This is not especially breaking news, but with 50 or so allocations of the 500-unit run left, on a recent visit to Molsheim, we asked Bugatti Chief Test Driver (and multiple Le Mans winner) Andy Wallace if the carmaker was planning to create the world's fastest roadster with theChiron, a record it already holds with the Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse.

The answer was a simple "no." And the reason comes down to a metric even hardened supercar nerds might not be familiar with.

Most will know the Chiron's headline numbers of 1,500 horsepower, 1,180 lb-ft of torque, 273-mph top speed (in Super Sport guise), 0-60 mph time of 2.3 seconds (in Pur Sport spec), and 3-million-dollar base price tag.

But arguably the Chiron's most impressive measurement relates to its chassis.

Having recently driven the Chiron Sport, it's the feeling of absolute stability the hypercar provides when sprinting to 200 kph from a standstill in a smidge over five seconds and when slamming on the 16-inch, 8-piston brakes to return to within the speed limit before you can say "I was only in third gear?"

The confidence-inspiring chassis has a torsional rigidity of 50,000 Nm per degree. In simpler terms, this means 50,000 Newton meters of force is required to twist the Chiron's body by a single degree. For reference, a Toyota Corolla has 10,500 and the Rolls-Royce Phantom has 40,000.

Buyers have anumber of Chiron variantsto choose including the Chiron Sport, Pur Sport or the latest Super Sport. If they want a hypercar droptop, they'll have to scour the classifieds for a used Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse. That remains the fastest convertible on the planet having clocked a top speed of 408.84 km/h (254 mph).
