Just like an F1 car, the Project One has a power unit, not an engine.

Mercedes-AMG is hard at work developing a new flagship hypercar called the Project One. The car has been in development since 2017, but willfinally arrive soon. TheMercedes-AMG Project Onejust reached a pivotal point in its development cycle, where several pre-production models are conducting hot laps at the company's proving ground and technology center at Immendingen. It is the first time we've seen official track footage of the car's impressive new hybrid power unit, which also uses a Formula One-inspired 1.6-liter V6.

一个MG says the V6, when combined with four electric motors, produces more than 1,000 horsepower. As shown in the video, it also provides an exhaust note that is reminiscent of Lewis Hamilton's champion-pace F1 car. If the AMG One is as dominant on the road as its F1 sibling, other manufacturers should be worried.

一个dapting an engine from F1 for road use is no easy task, hence why the Project One's development cycle has taken so long. AMG set benchmarks to provide staggering performance capabilities along with daily drivability, plus the ability to drive on electric power alone. This will be the first car that can switch from near silence to an F1-inspired shriek at the owner's command.

一个long with testing of the power unit, this track testing gave the engineers ample opportunity to work on the car's fully-functional active aerodynamics. All of the aero pieces including the louvers, air outlets, and rear spoiler were previously testing in a wind tunnel, but are now proving to be useful in a real-world scenario.

Back at the Mercedes-AMG home base in Affalterbach, the company is still putting the car's other components through rigorous diagnostics on engine testbeds and the in-house simulator. Following this phase of testing, Project One will go on the north loop of the Nurburgring for testing, where the car may later gun after a lap record.
