2019 Land Rover Discovery Test Drive Review: Off Road Family Hauling With Style

Land Rover has a well-earned reputation for SUVs that are incredibly capable off-road. The Discovery still has excellent off-roading credibility, but it's built into a luxurious and family-oriented SUV with excellent road manners. That's an intricate blend to put together and puts the Discovery in the Land Rover lineup between the rugged new Defender model and the go-anywhere in luxuryRange Rover. It's a blend Land Rover has got right, and the Discovery manages to be a smooth ride around town, a relaxing freeway cruiser, a capable off-roader, and seats up to seven people comfortably. On top of that, the Discovery also features some creative storage and utility solutions and ample cargo space when the third row isn't in use.

On the downside, the Discovery is not renowned for having a lightning-fast infotainment system, and fuel economy is not a strong point for either the supercharged V6 or the diesel-fueled turbo V6 engine. However, both options are mated to an excellent eight-speed automatic transmission, and the Discovery has a competitive towing ability, placing it in good stead against the few rivals it does have like theToyota Land Cruiser.

Four-zone climate control is now also available as an option to the base model. The rest of the range benefits from a software update to the infotainment system, offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto optionally, as well as making a heated windshield available to all trims. The HSE and HSE Luxury trims also have a standard wading-depth information system fitted that relays relevant info in real-time.

Discovery Exterior

其中最contemporary-looking摇来摇去m Land Rover, the 2019 Discovery carries over the sleek yet assertive look from the previous year, with all-LED exterior lighting now standard across the range as well as daytime running lights. The top-spec HSE Luxury gets front fog lights additionally. A body-colored roof is standard, but can be swapped for either black or grey contrast options. The base model has a fixed front and rear panoramic roof, while HSE and HSE Luxury models get a sliding front and fixed rear panorama roof. Where base models get Dark Atlas and Narvik Black accents around the grille, fender vent ingots, and door handles, HSE trims have their own styling with body-colored door handles and White Silver tow eye covers. All cars get rear privacy glass, too. 19-inch wheels are standard on the SE, while the HSE and HSE Luxury get 20-inch items instead.

Dimensions

Spread over a length of 195.6 inches, the Disco has a 115-inch wheelbase and a total height of 74.3 inches, including the roof antenna. Width is a bulky 87.4 inches with mirrors folded out (81.6 with mirrors in), and the standard ground clearance is 8.5 inches - this increases to 11.1 inches with the optional air suspension in its highest setting. Given its off-road nature, the Disco also has a maximum wading depth of 35.4 inches, although sticking with the standard coil suspension decreases this to 33.5. Approach, breakover and departure angles are also best with the air suspension setup, coming in at 34/27.5/30 degrees respectively. The stock suspension sees this drop to 26.3/22.2/25.9 degrees.

Carrying all the necessary equipment to maintain it's hardy status as well as provide luxury seating for up to seven passengers results in a curb weight of 4,901 pounds for gasoline variants, maxing out at 5,066 for those with diesel engines.

Exterior Colors

There are 12 colors available to dress your Discovery in, although various exterior hues go hand-in-hand with interior trim, so you might need to take a bit of time to peruse your options. Basic colors include Fuji White and Narvik Black, while the metallic palette comprises Yulong White, Indus Silver, Corris Grey, Loire Blue, Santorini Black, and Byron Blue. There are also four premium metallics to choose from, including Farallon Black, Silicon Silver, Carpathian Grey, and - finally, a more exciting option - Namib Orange. While the majority of paints can be specced with either a black or grey contrast roof, the two black shades can only be had with grey roofing, and Corris Grey can get only Black.

Discovery Performance

Two powertrains are available for the Land Rover Discovery, covering both gas-fed and diesel ends of the spectrum. There's a 340-horsepower gasoline Si6 motor capable of getting the big SUV to 60 mpg in 6.9 seconds, according to the manufacturer. The 254-hp Td6 diesel engine offers slower acceleration, but mountains of torque, and can manage the same sprint in 7.7 seconds. When it comes to towing, the gasoline V6 has a maximum towing capacity of 8,201 pounds, outshining the diesel's 7,716 lbs by 485 lbs. Both engines are paired to an all-wheel drivetrain and have a two-speed transfer case for when you want to take things off-road. Standard on all trims is the Terrain Response suite that works to optimize the engine, transmission, and chassis to suit where you're taking your Disco. Additionally, all models feature Rock Crawl mode to help the Discovery keep its footing over rougher surfaces.

Engine and Transmission

There are two options available for powering your Discovery: a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 gasoline engine with 340 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque, or a 3.0-liter turbodiesel with 254 hp and 443 lb-ft. Both are paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission, which in both cases is the saving grace for the entire setup. While both power plants tend to be a little rough around the edges (and could do with some refinement), the smooth-shifting auto 'box offers intuitive, effective shifts.

The choice in engines is between the extra power and towing ability of the gas-powered supercharged V6 engine or the less powerful but more torquey turbo-diesel unit with an almost acceptable fuel economy rating. Our test vehicle came with the gas-powered engine and proved to be a willing powerplant with plenty of power to pass traffic or get up a steep hill. D mode tries to make up for the overt gas-guzzling by dulling the engine's performance dramatically. So, for when you need to hustle, there is a good reason for moving into S mode on the rotary shift knob and sharpening up the response.

While the engine does lack refinement, despite a supercharger traditionally being the smoother way to push extra air into an engine. However, the transmission is a delight that always finds the right gear with quick and smooth transitions.

Getting off the road, the traction control system and off-road aids make soggy or dusty trails an absolute breeze. There's less axle articulation than previous generations of Discovery, but the balance between on-road and off-road ability is well balanced and one of the Discovery's best selling points.

Handling and Driving Impressions

You'll never forget you're driving a large SUV, but the steering is precise around town and composed through corners on winding roads. There's little chassis lean from the suspension, but the ride is still plush across choppy pavement. Braking is smooth and linear, so it's not until the brakes are piled on in an emergency that the Discovery's weight has a negative effect. We couldn't find anywhere that the Discovery wasn't pleasant to drive, and the precision and ease of use of the steering makes it as easy to park as to guide it down the freeway.

Venturing off the tarmac, the Discovery shines in slippery conditions, and the All-Terrain Progress Control does a top-notch job of acting like a low-speed cruise control over low-traction surfaces. The Discovery also has a better approach and departure angle than its looks suggest at 34 degrees and 30 degrees, respectively.

Discovery Gas Mileage

The most efficient power plant in the range is the turbodiesel, with EPA figures of 21/26/23 mpg on the city/highway/combined cycles. The gasoline versions fare substantially worse, with 16/21/18 mpg allocated to it; these figures make it abundantly clear why the diesel is included in the range to begin with, as it is a much less impressive performer in terms of acceleration and towing capacity, but offers a 517-mile range from its 22.5-gallon fuel tank. In comparison, the gas-fed models only manage 423 before needing to fill up, despite having a slightly larger tank (23.5 gallons).

Fuel economy is an area that hurts the Discovery, and you have to take a hit on power and put diesel in the tank to have a reasonable amount of fuel economy. We found ourselves down at an indicated 16 mpg combined after a week of mixed driving.

Discovery Interior

As standard, both the SE and HSE models come with seating for five, which can be optionally increased to seven by adding in a third row. The seven-seater setup is standard on the HSE Luxury, and heating is offered for all seven perches on the top-spec model. Heating and ventilation can only be specced from the HSE upwards, and are ten-way power-adjustable from the base model, moving up to 14-way with memory on the HSE Luxury. Windsor leather and massage function can be added to the top-end model, only. As is expected of a Land Rover, the Disco's interior is beautifully appointed and well laid out, with high-quality materials and a long list of convenience features that make the cabin a comfortable place to be. This includes dual-zone climate control on the base model, three-zone on the upper two trims, and optional four-zone temperature control, which is new for 2020. Visibility is fine in all directions, but rearwards can be problematic with the headrests extended and taller passengers in the third row.

Seating and Interior Space

Spending a lot of time in the Discovery is far from unpleasant. The seats are well sculpted and avoid being either too soft or too firm and have good adjustable lumbar support in the front. The front seats also get a generous 39.1 inches of legroom, and while the middle row has 37.6 inches to use, tall passengers can be cramped some by a tall driver. The high center console can make the front passenger and driver's area feel narrower than it is, but there's plenty of headroom for everyone. Meanwhile, the third row only offers 33.5 inches of legroom, meaning it's best reserved for teens and not over long-distance journeys.

The driving position in the Discovery is excellent and gives a feeling of command. Visibility out the front is excellent, and only the rear center headrest hampers rear visibility. The third row suffers the same space issue as almost every mid-size SUV with seven seats, and families will mostly reserve them for the kids.

  • Front Leg Room 42.4 in

Interior Colors and Materials

Not only are the materials luxurious on the inside, but the Discovery's interior is well put together and the design does an excellent job of hiding unsightly things like seals, joins, and hard plastics. Overall, there really isn't anything to complain about on the inside, and even in dark colors, it's a light and airy feeling place to be. The two-tone color schemes available vary by trim level, and Land Rover does a particularly good job blending them with leather trim on the doors and dash as well as open-pore wood and piano black trim. Our tester featured Ebony as its primary color with Pimento piping on the seats. Lighter shades available include Acorn, Light Oyster/Espresso, Vintage Tan, and a cream-like shade called Glacier. The dash, door, and center console can be decked out in no fewer than six trim finishes, ranging from sedate options such as gloss black or brushed aluminum to Natural Shadow Oak and a High Gloss Charcoal Oak veneer. Titanium Mesh is also available as part of the Complete Dynamic Design Package.

Discovery Trunk and Cargo Space

Cargo space with seven seats in place is not particularly impressive, but this is more a hazard of the segment than it is a uniquely Discovery problem. There's only around nine cubic feet available behind the third row, which expands to a fraction over 40 with those seats stowed away. Maximum cargo volume is 83.7 cubic feet with all rear seats folded away. By way of comparison, theAudi Q7offers a much better 14.2 cubic feet behind the third row, but loses out at only 35.7 cu-ft when the rear-most row is folded down. The Discovery offers more than 15 cubes over and above the Q7 with all its seats down.

For small items, there is ample storage in the cabin. There's an overhead storage bin for sunglasses, an upper and lower glovebox, a center console with a deep bin and a tray in the lid, as well as the option to add a cooler underneath said armest. There are two cupholders up front, two in the rear center armrest, and various nooks and crannies for the third seat. A plus point is the in-fascia storage when the third row is equipped, which neatly stores valuables out of eyesight behind the climate controls.

Discovery Infotainment and Features

Features

Regardless of engine, all three specification levels come well-equipped with features, with the base spec SE fitted with five seats in grained leather that can power-adjust ten ways. The HSE Luxury gets Windsor leather and more adjustment, as well as heating for front and rear perches, and seven seats as standard. A heated steering wheel is only standard on the top-spec model, but it can be optioned on across the range - all models get a premium leather steering wheel with controls and paddle-shifters, too. Dual-zone climate control is equipped to the entry-level trim, upgrading to three-zone on the topmost models, with ambient lighting throughout (tweaked to be configurable on the HSE Luxury).

所有模型得到地形响应与岩石爬de, stop/start tech, emergency braking, hill descent control, and hill start assist, while an active rear locking differential can be optioned on to all trims. Push-button start, lane keep assist, a driver condition monitor, 360-degree parking aid, and park assist are stock-fitted for all trims, while the mid-spec model upgrades from the base's standard cruise control to adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go. Traffic sign recognition, blind-spot assist, and high-speed emergency braking are adding from the HSE, and a surround-view camera can be added on to all models, together with steering assist for the adaptive cruise control.

Infotainment

The base SE model comes with a 10-inch touchscreen, navigation system, satellite radio, and a 250-watt audio system with ten speakers and a subwoofer. The HSE model comes standard with a 14-speaker Meridian sound system boasting 825 watts of power. Sound is crisp and clear whatever the system, the navigation is good, and Bluetooth is a cinch to set up. Unfortunately, we found the touch screen to be on the slow side. Not to the point of frustration, but we do expect a sharper response on a premium vehicle.

It may be on the slow side, but we liked the infotainment system's user interface. It's easy to figure out where to go for what you need to do, whether it's adjusting comfort and environment controls to dropping the rear seats. The majority of functions are integrated into the screen controls, and Land Rover has done an excellent job of keeping things simple and logical. Android Auto and Apple Carplay come on the lower trim as part of an optional package, which we found curious on a premium vehicle that comes with navigation as standard.

Discovery Problems and Reliability

One recall was issued for the 2019 Land Rover Discovery, and pertains to a potentially fracture-prone crankshaft pulley retaining bolt that could lead to engine failure. Although J.D. Power doesn't have any contributions to make in terms of a reliability rating, the manufacturer offers a four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, inclusive of powertrain coverage and roadside assistance.

Discovery Safety

The 2019 Land Rover Discovery has not been subject to any crash test evaluations by either the NHTSA or IIHS.

Key Safety Features

Despite having no crash test scores to base safety assumptions on, the Land Rover Discovery strives to allay fears by cramming its cars full of safety tech. This includes six standard airbags when equipped as a five-seater (dual front, front side, and side curtain), increasing to eight when seven seats are specified. Driver assists include push-button start, lane keep assist, and a driver condition monitor. There's also a 360-degree parking aid comprised of and overhead view of the vehicle when reverse is selected, and sensors around the car to indicate its distance from objects. A rearview camera, rear traffic alert, and clear exit monitor are also installed for all models. The base SE gets cruise control, and both the HSE and HSE Luxury are fitted with adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go, blind-spot monitoring, as well as high-speed emergency braking and traffic sign recognition. Steering assist and a surround-view camera can be optioned on to all trims.

Verdict:Is the 2019 Land Rover Discovery a good SUV?

It's hard not to be impressed by Discovery as a balanced blend of on and off-road manners. It fills the gap nicely between the Range Rover and the new Defender as a family orientated luxury hauler that can deal comfortably with going adventuring. It's also stylish and a pleasure to drive, so if all of that adds up to something you want or need, then we would recommend taking a test drive as there's not much that fills that bracket so well. What's important is to not understate how good of an off-roader the Discovery is, particularly compared with seven-seaters on the market. It's a big level up in ability compared to all-wheel-drive available crossovers likethe Honda PilotorBMW X7.

What's the Price of the 2019 Land Rover Discovery?

Base-spec SE models in the range have a sticker price of $52,950 when equipped with the standard gasoline V6, with a jump to $59,700 for HSE models. Opting for the top-spec HSE Luxury will set you back $67,200. Opting for the turbocharged diesel engine on any trim adds $2,000 to your bill; all prices quoted here exclude a $1,025 delivery fee, as well as any taxes, licensing or registration.

2019 Land Rover Discovery Models

The 2019 Land Rover Discovery range comprises three trim levels, namely the SE, HSE, and HSE Luxury. Each comes with a standard 3.0-liter V6 gas engine, but can be had with a turbocharged diesel instead - both are mated to an eight-speed automatic and feature permanent four-wheel-drive.

At the entry point to the range, the SE comes equipped with standard seating allotments for five passengers, with grained leather upholstery and ten-way power-adjustments for the front seats. Dual-zone climate control is standard, as is a leather-wrapped steering wheel, ambient lighting, and a standard ten-speaker sound system. Bluetooth, navigation, and Wi-Fi are all stock-fitted, as is push-button start, cruise control, lane keep assist, a driver condition monitor, park assist, and a rear traffic monitor. It rides on 19-inch wheels and features all-LED exterior lighting.

Mid-spec HSE models add signature Hi-Line tail lights and larger 20-inch wheels to the exterior, while the cabin gets upgraded climate control and a memory function to the driver's seat. The infotainment suite is bolstered with a ten-speaker Meridian sound setup, SiriusXM and HD Radio, as well as an interactive driver display. The steering column features power adjustment and the driver assist suite gets adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go, traffic sign recognition, blind spot assist, and high-speed emergency braking. On both this and the lower-spec model, a third row of seating is optional.

The top-spec HSE Luxury gets the third row of seats stock-fitted. On the outside, it gets front fog lights while the interior features 14-way power-adjustable front seats with memory on Windsor leather surfaces. Both front and rear seats are heated at this level, as is the steering wheel. This model also gets the benefit of a 14-speaker Meridian Surround Sound system.

Additional Packages

Two important additional packages must be noted first, namely the Seven Seat Package for the SE and HSE, as well as Capability Package which includes the electronic air suspension and Terrain Response 2, which cost $2,195 and $1,530 respectively.

For the SE, the Drive Package will add on blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, and high-speed emergency braking - it is priced at $1,900.

The Capability Plus Package can be optioned on to the HSE and HSE Luxury and equips an active rear locking differential, Terrain Response 2, and All Terrain Progress Control, all for $1,275.

Adding heating to the steering wheel as well as the front and rear seats on the SE and HSE will cost you $1,275, while the Luxury Climate Comfort Package on the same trims upgrades to heated/ventilated seats, four-zone climate control, solar attenuating windshield and more adjustments to the front seats. It's priced at $3,300 if in five-seater configuration, and $3,660 for the seven-seater option.

Advanced tow assist can be added on for $410, and a head-up display will cost you $970. The posh Meridian 14-speaker sound system can also be added for $870 on the lower two trims.

What Land Rover Discovery Model Should I Buy?

As with all luxury vehicles, the more you spend going up the trim levels, then the more you're going to enjoy the experience. We like the base SE as a value proposition and would option the Capability Package to increase the Discovery's ability off-road and comfort on-road. If there's a lot of adventuring in the SUV's future, the Capability Plus Package is a great idea. For us, the mid-level HSE trim is the sweet spot for what the Discovery aims to be, though, and comes with blind spot monitoring amongst its standard safety features as well as making the Capability Plus Package an option to give it as much of an advantage as possible on slippery terrain.

2019 Land Rover Discovery vs Land Rover Discovery Sport

Upping the ante on athleticism, the Discovery Sport takes the already impressive package that is the standard Discovery, and channels it away from the off-road focus for a more sassy, nimble vibe. With two engine options on the Disco Sport - a 237-hp or 286-hp turbo four-cylinder motor - it does without the benefit of the more fuel-efficient diesel engines available to the Discovery. The results are 21/25/22 mpg in its most efficient guise, literally one mpg behind its diesel-engined stablemate. And, despite making less horsepower at 286 hp to the standard Disco's 340 hp, it manages a much quicker acceleration to 60 mph - somewhere in the mid-six-second range compared to the 6.9 second time of the gas V6 Discovery. Towing capacity is a tell-tale sign of what each model is designed for, however, with the Discovery capable of pulling up to 8,201 lbs, while the Disco Sport barely manages half that. Although they share a family name, these two siblings couldn't be more different: buy the Discovery if you want space, family-oriented adventuring and hauling, and comfort; get the Discovery Sport if you want to show off, dart about the city, and look good doing so.

See Land Rover Discovery Sport Review

2019 Land Rover Discovery vs Land Rover Range Rover Evoque

Still keeping it in the family, the Range Rover Evoque is also a sporty, slick alternative to the Discovery. It is classified as a compact SUV, however, so as standard offers a lot less space overall. This sleeker look not only affects cargo space, but only allows for five passengers as opposed to the maximum seven in the Disco, but it has other benefits too. The Evoque is significantly less weighty, maxing out at 4,045 lbs curb weight in its heaviest guise - more than 1,000 lbs less than the Discovery with its diesel engine. This translates to agile, engaging driving which is the biggest drawcard for the Evoque - it doesn't have the practicality or versatility that the Discovery offers, but it looks amazing and is much more fun to drive. Take your pick.
