If you thought the Wrangler was the smallest and most enjoyable Jeep out there, then you clearly haven't seen the 2021 Jeep Renegade. This subcompact SUV is a perfect poster child for the brand, with its boxy but funky appearance and genuine off-roading capabilities. The base engine under the hood of the 2021 Jeep Renegade is a 2.4-liter inline-4 gas engine, which is good for 180 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. This doesn't sound like a lot, because it isn't. The optional turbocharged 1.3-liter 4-cylinder isn't much better, with 177 hp and 210 lb-ft. Both come mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission, and while a front-wheel drivetrain is standard on some models, the Sport, Jeepster, Freedom, Limited, and Trailhawk come with four-wheel drive exclusively. Theother trims have the option of adding 4WD.
Performance is never thrilling, but the turbo four-pot is slightly better with its boosted low-down torque. There is enough power for town driving, and crawling over rough terrain, but highway driving is a whole other tragic story. Regardless, the transmission is a nightmare, with poorly timed shifts, constant searching for the right gear, and a complete disregard for any manual shift inputs. Maximum towing capacity is 2,000 lbs, and the process is not recommended without AWD equipment.
The Renegade doesn't look like it belongs among its competitors, which helps it stand out. It's rugged and has the off-roading chops to back up its appearance. However, it's different in other ways, too, but these are mostly bad. On-road comfort is never particularly good, and both engines are weak and lose their breath quickly when pushed to perform. They don't even offer good gas mileage returns - even with the turbo engine.
