The Grand Cherokee 4xe embraces electrification.

Stellantis hosted its first-ever EV Day, where it revealed several new projects from its various brands. The teaser for Dodge'sfirst electric muscle carwas the star of the show, but we also got our first look at the2022 Jeep Grand Cherokeein 4xe plug-in hybrid guise. Jeep already started selling the new-generationthree-row Grand Cherokee L, though this is our first time seeing the two-row model outsidespy shots.

As far as teasers go, this one is pretty revealing, so it seems odd Jeep didn't go ahead and show us more angles of the car or its interior. An official reveal will take place next month at the 2021 New York International Auto Show. The images show the Grand Cherokee 4xe plugged into aJeep-branded Electrify America charging station, positioned around the country near off-road trails.

From this single exterior view, we can see the two-row Grand Cherokee look broadly similar to the L, but with a slightly different bumper design and unique wheels. The D-pillar drops down from the roof rather than up from the beltline on the Grand Cherokee L, and the roofline itself is clearly available with a two-tone black finish. Even the rear side window glass has a different shape, and the tailgate features a unique black bar between the taillights that is not present on the L.

The Grand Cherokee 4xe arrives as the second plug-in hybrid Jeep in the US market, along with the Wrangler 4xe. It acts as a step towards expanding Jeep's electrification portfolio with the company's new slogan, "Zero Emission, 100% Freedom."

Jeep hasn't revealed any details regarding the Grand Cherokee 4xe's drivetrain, though we suspect it will mimic the Wrangler 4xe with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with an electric motor, combining to produce 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. The non-4xe Grand Cherokee should be available with a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 or a 5.7-liter Hemi V8.
