2019 Chevrolet Blazer

But unlike the original K5 Blazer, which was a body-on-frame off-road truck, this new model is a crossover - more like the S10 Blazer from the mid-90s and early '00s. If you were holding out hope for a tough, off-road-ready Wrangler competitor, the new Blazer has probably left you feeling disappointed, but in most of the important ways, it is potentially the best crossover in GM's lineup at the moment.

It combined aggressive looks, some strong powertrain options, and great technology, and possibly the best interior we've seen on a Chevy product recently. Chevy sent us a RED Hot 2019 Blazer RS so we could find out if it lives up to its name, or if it is simply a flop.

The Blazer takes a refreshing approach to modern crossover SUV styling by not pretending to be an off-road warrior but instead borrowing some of the Camaro's muscle car styling cues which are most noticeable in the front, where the headlights and angular grille clearly show off its family connections. The side profile tells the same story: its swooping muscular lines resemble a baby Camaro, but the rear end reminds one that this is most certainly a crossover. Accompanying the modern design is a series of standard features that build on the car-like appeal of the Blazer; LED daytime running lights, body-colored door handles and 18-inch silver-painted alloy wheels look sharp. A hands-free liftgate. Different grille designs and a range of alloy wheels in various sizes are available higher up in the range.

On paper, the Blazer sounds like a winning recipe in the styling department and out on the road, this fact rings even more true. We had several people come over to ask us about the Blazer - perhaps the red paint was a draw. People seem to like how the Blazer looks (especially in RS trim) and we wholeheartedly agree.

Chevrolet has moved away from the traditional midsize body-on-frame SUV design and has placed the new car firmly in the crossover class of vehicles. Lengthwise, the new Blazer measures 191.4 inches and is 67 inches tall. With a maximum width of 76.7 inches and a wheelbase of 112.7 inches, the short and squat stance gives the new Blazer a planted look, and with 7.4 inches of ground clearance, it should have no problem clearing pavement blocks or extreme suburban speed bumps. Chevrolet has managed to keep the Blazer's curb weight down to a relatively low 3,782 pounds, 177 pounds less than the Ford Edge and Honda Passport.

Chevrolet offers a range of ten paint colors for the 2019 Blazer, all suited to highlighting the new body styles curves and car-like profile. The three no-cost colors are Summit White, Silver Ice Metallic and Black, but the best choices will cost new buyers a few extra dollars. The tamest extra-cost colors are Nightfall Gray Metallic Graphite Metallic and Cajun Red Tintcoat, but the designers at Chevrolet have thrown in a few wild cards that include an in-your-face Sunlit Bronze Metallic, Oakwood Metallic, Red Hot and Kinetic Blue Metallic. Opting for one of the more extroverted colors like Red Hot suits the new Blazer, as it makes Chevy's latest crossover look even more Camaro.

Performance varies significantly between the 2.5-liter four-cylinder and 3.6-liter V6 with the latter offering over 100 hp and 82 lb-ft of torque more than the front-wheel-drive base four-banger model. The 3.6-liter Blazer can send its power to all four wheels and manages to sprint to sixty in under seven seconds; an impressive number for a family-friendly suburban crossover. Behind the wheel, the car impresses with spritely handling characteristics that partly conceals the fact that it's a mid-size crossover. For the 2020 model year, Chevy will also offer a2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo enginewith 230 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, slotted as the middle powertrain option.

Two engines, two drive types, and one gearbox are what's on offer for 2019. All FWD Blazers are fitted with a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with variable valve timing. This engine is capable of producing 193 hp and 188 lb-ft of torque at 4400 rpm. For the power-hungry, there's a 3.6-liter V6 on offer with a beefy 308 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque at 3000 rpm. Both engines are mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission with overdrive and driver shift control.

Our tester was equipped with the largest engine, the 3.6-liter GM corporate V6 they stuff in nearly everything these days. The engine may be a bit generic sounding, but it offers strong acceleration and Chevy's nine-speed automatic is smooth as butter. Chevy didn't even bother adding paddle shifters on the steering wheel and in all honesty, the transmission works so well we barely noticed. The Blazer's stop-start is also remarkably civilized for a non-hybrid vehicle, though fuel economy doesn't seem to be aided much by its inclusion.

Unfortunately, the Blazer may look like a Camaro SUV but it certainly doesn't drive like one. The steering is nowhere near as engaging and the engine/transmission combination, while smooth, isn't vicious like you'll find in the Camaro. So if that's what you've come to the Blazer expecting, you will be disappointed. But if you are perfectly happy with a comfortable crossover with plenty of passing power and above-average handling, the Blazer will likely exceed your expectations - it certainly exceeded ours.

We recently tested theEdge ST- a sportier and more powerful crossover - and even though the Ford will eat the Chevy's lunch in a straight line, the Blazer's transmission felt far smoother and the ride comfort was worlds better. The Blazer shines in ride comfort, even with the optional 21-inch wheels (part of the Sun and Wheels Package) found on our tester.

Gas mileage figures are class-competitive, but the naturally aspirated engines can't match the smaller turbocharged units of the Ford Edge. The 2.5-liter four-pot in FWD guise will return an EPA estimated 22/27/24 mpg city/highway/combined, and is the most fuel-efficient in the Blazer range while the 3.6-liter AWD version gets away with a surprisingly decent 18/25/21 mpg. The Ford Edge, equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four, gets 22/29/25 mpg in FWD and 21/28/23 when spinning all fours. The Honda Passport is driven by a similar 3.5-liter V6 that manages 20/25/22 mpg in FWD and 19/24/21 mpg in AWD mode. The FWD Blazer is equipped with a 19.4-gallon fuel tank, and the AWD version is slightly larger at 21.7, giving the Blazer an estimated combined range of between 407 and 446 miles.

In real-world testing, the Blazer fell short of its fuel economy estimates, with our V6 AWD tester only managing 16.5 mpg average.

The base model includes dual-zone automatic climate control, cruise control, a plethora of cupholders and a digital compass, for when you're lost in a mega-mall parking complex. The driver info display measures 4.2-inches and is nestled between the analog rev counter and speedometer. Additional features on higher trim models include powered heated and ventilated seats, ambient LED lighting, and more.

This is the nicest interior we've seen on a Chevy product in a while - so good in fact, we wouldn't have been shocked to see a Buick (or even Cadillac) badge on the steering wheel. In the Camaro, this layout feels squandered because of a lack of space but in the Blazer, it works to near perfection.

The seats and materials change depending on which trim level you select. Our RS tester sported black leather chairs with red stitching and perforations. The front seats are comfortable on long journeys and feature strong heated and ventilation functions with rear heated seats on upper trim levels. Even though rear-seat legroom isn't the most on paper, the seats slide and recline to offer plenty of comfort for occupants and the area feels roomier than the numbers would suggest. A flat floor helps provide foot space, even for middle-seat passengers.

You'd better be a fan of red if you get the Blazer RS trim because the interior is littered in it. There's red trim in the gauges, dashboard, air vents, seats, shifter, and the steering wheel. We like it, as it matches the flashy exterior, though the Premier trim might be more suitable for a more mature audience. The RS trim sits near the top of the Blazer lineup, so the dashboard and seats are all covered in high-quality leather, giving an almost Buick-like interior feel.

One of the Chevy Blazer's most significant downsides is its limited cargo space. It tails rivals such as the Honda Passport and Chevrolet Blazer by a wide margin, and for that reason, everyday practicality takes a large knock. With the rear seats folded up, the Blazer offers 30.5 cubic feet of cargo space, which is comparatively small for a car in the Midsize crossover class; the Ford Edge is 8.7 cubic feet larger, but the Honda Passport obliterates both with a cavernous 41.2 cubic feet. With the rear seats folded down, the Blazer's cargo hold grows to 64.7 cubic feet, which sounds ample, but is once again overshadowed by the Ford and Honda. The Blazer's saving grace is its small-item storage space; the center console bin is generously sized, and there are numerous sports for stashing your phone and keys. We also loved the Blazer's trunk rail system in the cargo area, which can divide the space up so small items don't roll around.

Far from offering a premium experience in its base form, the 2019 Blazer does provide most of the features expected from a competent family-focused crossover in 2019. Standard features on the base model include hill start assist, LED daytime running lights, dual-zone climate control, a leather-wrapped and heated steering wheel and cruise control. More desirable features become available on higher trim levels: power seats, a power liftgate and heated seats can be found on the mid-range Blazer, while more advanced goodies such as ambient LED lighting and a premium Bose sound system can be found higher up. The majority of active safety features are reserved for the Leather Blazer, RS, and Premier, and are optional on the rest of the range.

Chevy's MyLink infotainment is housed on a standard eight-inch touchscreen with excellent responsiveness and high resolution. We admittedly forgot how good this system was since the last time we tested it and it was a delight in our week of testing. All of the hits of modern infotainment are here, including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and GM's growing collection of Marketplace applications. We were also blown away by the Blazer's 360-degree camera system, which is good enough to rival several cars with six-figure price tags.

Power, but with a selection of naturally aspirated engines, and a traditional automatic gearbox, the drivetrain should last a long time when looked after. Chevrolet covers the Blazer with a standard three-year/36,000 mile warranty which includes corrosion warranty, and a five year /60,000-mile drivetrain and roadside assistance package. The Blazer's warranty stacks up fairly well when compared to the competition, with only the three-year/36,000 mile corrosion warranty falling short of the five-year average.

The IIHS has only performed a partial test which consists of a front, moderate overlap, and side-impact test. The Blazer managed a good score for both which can be attributed to its reinforced body which has been built around a safety cage made from ultra high strength steel. The Honda Passport matches the Blazer on the NHTSA scale, as does the Ford Edge, but the Ford takes the cake according to the IIHS.

Standard safety features that can be found across the range include front and seat-mounted airbags, a driver's knee airbag and head-curtain airbags for occupants in the back. An HD rear-view camera, electronic stability control and a one-month subscription to the OnStar safety & security network wraps up the list. Advanced active safety systems are reserved for higher-spec models, and even then you'll have to pay extra. Forward collision warning with following distance alert as well as automatic forward braking and pedestrian braking are all optional extras on RS and Premier models. Lane change assistance and blind-spot warning are standard features on the upper half of the Blazer range and are an optional extra on the base model and entry-level V6.

So is the Blazer a crossover we'd recommend? Absolutely. It may not be what some old school Blazer fans were hoping for but honestly, those people don't make up a huge portion of the market. In the two-row crossover segment, strong looks, outstanding technology, and a nice drivetrain could be enough to sway buyers from competitors like the Ford Edge, Honda Passport, Hyundai Santa Fe, and Nissan Murano. Those competitors all have major faults of their own and the Blazer just feels more solid across the board. The price is a bit high, though we can expect to see GM offer strong incentives, making the Blazer one of the strongest options on the market right now.

The 2019 Blazer is priced to go, and in base model offers one of the best deals in its class. Prices start from $28,800 for the 2.5-liter FWD L, while the next trim up, the Blazer Cloth, starts at $32,300 for the four-pot, rising to $33,300 for the big six. The Blazer Leather goes for $37,500; the RS costs $40,600 and the top of the line Premier sells for $42,700. These prices exclude a destination fee of $1,195. To put these prices into perspective, the base model Ford Edge retails for $29,995, matching the Blazer, and the starting price for a Honda Passport is $31,990.

Chevrolet sells the Blazer in five trim levels, L, Cloth, Leather, RS, and Premier. The base model is known as the Blazer L which boasts standard hill start assistance, LED daytime running lights, dual-zone climate control, and an eight-inch Chevrolet infotainment 3 system with Bluetooth streaming, voice command, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity. The Blazer Cloth adds a compact spare tire, tinted rear windows, an eight-way power driver's seat, satellite radio, and the optional 3.6-liter V6. The Blazer with leather adds a power liftgate, heated and powered wing mirrors, black roof rails and heated front seats. The sporty-looking RS brags with twin exit exhaust pipes, a tuned steering ratio, and tuned dampers as well as a larger driver info display system and navigation. Ambient LED lighting, and various appearance extras are also included. The top-of-the-range Premier builds on the RS platform by adding a premium Bose sound system, heated and ventilated front seats and microfiber seating material.

The Convenience Package adds remote start, a power liftgate, lane change assistance, rear-cross traffic alert, rear park assist and a set of auto-dimming side and rearview mirrors. The Sound and Technology Package, available on the Blazer Leather seating costs $1,400 and includes a rear camera mirror, Chevy's premium eight-inch infotainment system, a Bose eight-speaker sound system, and HD surround vision as well as two USB ports and a 120-volt power outlet. The Premier model can be kitted out with the $2,165 Driver Confidence 2 package, which adds a number of active safety features such as forward collision alert, adaptive cruise control, and front pedestrian braking.

Just based on looks alone, the RS trim should be the highest on your shopping list. The Blazer's looks simply can't shine on the base models and even the well-option Premier trim lacks the eye-catching styling found on its RS sibling. We recommend opting for a bold color like the RED Hot hue of our tester, get the Enhance Convenience and Driver Confidence II Package for $3,575, and call it a day. If you really like getting a little more sun, the Sun and Wheels Package for $2,495 adds a panoramic roof as well as 21-inch black wheels. This package seems like an odd combination we wish Chevy would offer these features separately.

Offering good looks, a potent turbocharged engine, and good interior and cargo space, the Ford Edge is a strong competitor in the midsize SUV crossover class. The 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine found in the Ford produces 250 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque at 3000 rpm. The Ford Edge is one of the most economical cars in its class, returning 22/29/25 mpg city/highway/combined. The Edge is a smaller car in terms of exterior dimensions, but surpasses the Blazer in terms of interior space, offering more legroom and headroom front and rear. The Edge also provides significantly more cargo space. With a sorted chassis that responds well to steering inputs and a good list of features, the Edge is hard to beat.

The Honda Passport has been revived to act as the company's primary midsize SUV offering. Power comes from a 3.5-liter V6 pushing out 280 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque at 4700 rpm. The Passport averages a class middling 20/25/22 mpg city/highway/combined which is a hair better than the Blazer. The Passport is a larger car overall, but can't beat the Blazer on legroom. Where the Passport shines is in the cargo department: offering 41.2 cubic feet behind the rear seats, and a monstrous 100.7 cubic feet maximum behind the front seats, the Passenger is one of the class-leading cargo haulers. The Passport is a refined machine with moderate off-roading capabilities, something that the Blazer does not have.
