We recently got a revealing look at the new M2's redesigned front fascia inleaked photos, and now our spies have caught BMW testing a prototype of the next-generation sports car on the streets of Germany. Whereas the regular 2 Series is equipped with an 8.8-inch touchscreen and a 5.1-inch driver display as standard, the new M2 has a noticeably larger curved display akin to the electric i4 and iX. Both EVs are equipped with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch infotainment display, which appear to be carrying over to the M2.

On the outside, the new M2 prototype is still fully camouflaged. Wider fenders are the most obvious giveaway that we're looking at the full-fat M2 car. The prototype is also riding on larger wheels . As we saw in this week's leaked photos, the new M2 will have a bespoke front bumper with a wider lower grille and square intakes.

In terms of proportions, the M240i xDrive is 3.5 inches longer, 2.6 inches wider, and 0.1 inches lower than the old model, so we're also expecting the new M2 to be larger than its predecessor.

Based on the CLAR platform, the new M2 is likely to share the same 3.0-liter six-cylinder twin-turbo engine as its M3 and M4 siblings. In the M3 and M4 Competition, this unit generates 503 hp and 479 lb-ft, but rumors suggest the new M2 will have 490 hp to play with. If true, the new M2 will be more powerful than the M2 CS, which is rated at 444 hp. Since the new 2 Series has only just debuted, the new M2 will most likely break cover next year.
