2022 Porsche Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo Review: Electric Off-Road Glory

by Michael Butler

Porsche is officially a player in the electric car market, thanks to the amazing Taycan and this, the Taycan Cross Turismo. This high-performance AWD electric sports wagon follows from the smash hit that was the standard Taycan sedan and is to that model what the Sport Turismo variants are to the Panamera. This station wagon equivalent is more than just a long roof and extra storage, however, as Porsche has gifted it with a slew of attributes to make it ready to hit the dirt at an extreme pace. The Porsche Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo is monumentally quick thanks to a twin electric motor setup and 750 horsepower on overboost. Its wagon-like design puts it up against the gas-poweredAudi RS6 Avantbut its pure electric powertrain sees it match up against theTesla Model S. The Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo emerges as an interesting fusion of these competitors' attributes but the Porsche is notably pricier than both. Whether it justifies that premium is a question that's up for debate.

2022 Porsche Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo:What’s the Difference vs. the 2021 Porsche Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo?

The Cross Turismo was a brand-new arrival last year and Porsche isn't changing much for its second model year on the market. The infotainment system is usefully upgraded with the arrival - finally - of Android Auto, although it is wired and not wireless like the existing Apple CarPlay. An optional remote parking feature is also added, allowing the owner to instruct their Cross Turismo via their smartphone to enter and leave a parking space by itself, without anyone behind the wheel. Better thermal management and improved charging functions reduce charging times too. Finally, the arrival of Porsche's "Paint to Sample" program allows customers to choose their own personal paint colors, including those of classic '90s Porches.

2022 Porsche Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo Exterior

The Taycan was quite a stylistic departure for Porsche and the Cross Turismo pushes the envelope even further with its stretched roofline and raised ground clearance. It still looks sleek and arguably better than the Tesla Model S. Standard exterior features on the Turbo include a fixed panoramic roof, Cross Turismo-specific side skirts in black with Brilliant Silver inlays, active air intake flaps, auto-dimming mirrors, a roof spoiler, and LED headlights. The front vertical air curtains are a feature shared with other Taycan models. The Turbo Cross Turismo rolls on a set of 20-inch wheels, and the Turbo S gets 21-inch wheels in a unique design, while the arches get black cladding. The latter also has "Taycan Turbo S" script in high gloss black at the back, while the Turbo gets "Taycan Turbo" script in high gloss silver.

The Turbo S is marginally lower at 55.5 inches. Due to the mass of its battery pack and tons of luxury features, the Cross Turismo is not a lightweight: the German electric wagon tips the scale at 5,196 pounds, while the Turbo S weighs 5,199 lbs. The ride height is increased over the regular Taycan sedan by 0.78 inches, while an available Off-Road Design Package raises the ride height by a further 0.4 inches.

Engine and Transmission

It may be more practical, but it's certainly not slow. The Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo is powered by twin AC permanent synchronous motors and a performance battery with a capacity of 93.4 kWh. The power figures are insane: you get 670 hp when in overboost mode and 626 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to an all-wheel-drive system via a 2-speed automatic transmission on the rear axle and a single-speed transmission up front. Step on the go pedal, and the responsiveness is instantaneous and severe. Those with neck problems should make sure they are prepared for the whiplash on tap. The 0-60 mph sprint takes only 3.1 seconds, although independent testing has seen that time drop into the high two-second range. The Turbo S version ramps things up to 750 hp and 774 lb-ft on overboost and drops the 0-60 mph time down to 2.7 seconds. The top speed is limited to 155 mph in both cases. Despite its astonishing acceleration, the Porsche isn't as quick as the cheaper Tesla Model S Plaid which can reach 60 mph in under two seconds in the right conditions.

Handling and Driving Impressions

The Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo is first and foremost a GT-type cruiser built for comfort at high speeds. When cruising at or above the highway speed limit, it is serene and comfortable to pilot. Imperfections are soaked up well and road noise is minimal. Smaller bumps do become more perceptible at lower speeds, but it's still more comfortable than your standard 911. The optional Off-Road Design package raises the car by 0.4 inches to make things more bearable when driving on gravel.

We're thoroughly impressed at how well the Taycan Cross Turismo range handles. Steering response is quick and accurate, and despite the Cross Turismo's considerable curb weight, the EV loves to grip and delivers explosive corner exit grip and speed. Braking is also brutally efficient, and the ceramic composite brakes on the Turbo S feel race-car-like. Porsche offers the Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo with Sport, Gravel, and Range driving modes, and includes launch control. This car will embarrass a lot of dedicated track machines, and provide comparable off-road abilities to most high-performance SUVs that can't stray any further than a gravel track.

Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo Electric Range and Charging

The EPA has not yet officially verified the range or MPG equivalents for the Taycan Cross Turismo range at the time of this writing. However, due to the slightly increased weight, the Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo electric wagon sees its range fall somewhat from the regular Taycan. The Turbo Cross Turismo has an estimated EPA range of 204 miles according to the manufacturer and for the Turbo S the figure is 202 miles. Charging times are as follows: from 0 to 100 percent with a 9.6 kW source, the battery will take 10.5 hours to recharge. 5 to 80 percent on a 50 kW charge takes 93 minutes and 5 to 80 percent at the maximum charging rate takes 22.5 minutes.

Seating and Interior Space

十字架的造型的高级跑车提供更多的我nterior space than the regular Taycan. Porsche claims that the Cross Turismo offers 1.4 inches more rear headroom. As standard, the 2+2 seating concept means that four adults can be accommodated, although a 2+1 option adds a small center rear seat. This will, realistically, only be suitable for a child. Being more focused on comfort means that the Taycan's seats aren't as extreme as you'd get on a Porsche 911 GT3. They are super comfortable, and the front seats feature 14-way power adjustability and heating. The rear seats also enjoy standard heating. Adaptive sports seats with 18-way adjustability are standard in the Turbo S.

Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo Trunk and Cargo Space

十字架的高级跑车背后的想法是进攻r a more practical, family-friendly version of the Taycan. The Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo provides more cargo capacity than the regular Taycan Turbo. The front luggage compartment measures 2.9 cubic feet, but the Cross Turismo gets a larger rear luggage area that provides 14.3 cubic feet of space. This is less than the non-Turbo Cross Turismo (15.8 cubes) but more than the Taycan Turbo sedan (12.9 cubes). Numbers aside, what sets apart the Cross Turismo's rear cargo area is a broad opening and the large tailgate, making it easier to load large items. With the 60:40 rear seats folded, the Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo provides 41.4 cubes of space.

Small items can be stored in the glovebox, front center console, between the outer rear seats, and in the door pockets. Cupholders are provided for both front and rear occupants.

Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo Infotainment and Features

Features

起价153500美元,涡轮的十字架Turismo is no cheap trick, and Porsche has made sure to fill this EV with enough standard features to keep most happy. All Turbo Cross Turismo models come standard with dual-zone automatic climate control, 14-way power-adjustable front seats, heated front/rear seats, a 16.8-inch curved driver's display, and wireless phone charging. Driver assistance features include lane keep assist with traffic sign recognition, cruise control, front/rear parking sensors, and a rearview camera. The Turbo S adds 18-way power-adjustable front seats to the mix. Despite the high base price, Porsche charges a fortune for several features that really should be standard. Depending on your budget, you can add remote parking assistance, a surround-view camera system, a head-up display, and adaptive cruise control.

Infotainment

The central 10.9-inch infotainment display sits atop a smaller 8.4-inch screen used as a control panel and runs the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system with navigation, an FM radio, Bluetooth streaming, a Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless Apple CarPlay, and wired Android Auto. Sound is channeled through a 14-speaker Bose sound system with 710 watts of power. SiriusXM satellite radio is also offered on a three-month trial basis and HD Radio is also standard. This Porsche infotainment system is easy enough to use, and most drivers will get used to it in a couple of days. For those that want a little bit extra, Porsche offers a Burmester 3D high-end surround sound system with 21 speakers, a two-way center system, and a 400-watt active subwoofer for an additional $5,810. An additional 10.9-inch touchscreen display is another option and is positioned ahead of the front-seat passenger, allowing this occupant to assist with navigation, control the music, and more.

Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo Problems and Reliability

The Taycan platform is still a new one so it's not entirely surprising that there have been a few teething issues. Of the three recalls that have been announced for the Taycan Turbo, one directly mentions the 2021 Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo. This was for a software error that can cause a loss of power, potentially increasing the risk of a crash. There have been six recalls for the 2021 Taycan Turbo sedan.

Porsche will cover the Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo with a four-year/50,000-mile basic warranty as well as an eight-year/100,000-mile high voltage battery warranty. The company also provides 12 years of corrosion protection.

Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo Safety

At present, there is no review of the Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo from either the NHTSA or IIHS, but we expect this EV to be very safe. Standard safety features include stability and traction control, LED headlights, a ten-airbag system including front knee airbags and side airbags, a rearview camera, and cruise control.

At this price point, driver-assistance technologies are in short supply. So while you do get lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition, and front/rear parking sensors as standard, you need to pay extra for everything else. The vast options list includes a surround-view camera system, a head-up display, adaptive cruise control, remote parking assistance, night vision assist, lane change assist, and active lane keep assist.

Verdict:Is the 2022 Porsche Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo A Good Car?

Porsche broke the mold when it first introduced the all-electric Taycan. This vehicle signified a new era for the German sports car manufacturer, and one which more and more brands are starting to follow. We already know that the normal Taycan is a fiercely capable machine that's not only blisteringly fast but also rather practical and comfortable. In an era where almost every car on the road has some sort of crossover SUV version, it only made sense for Porsche to introduce a more practical and adventurous version of the Taycan. The Cross Turismo's wagon-like body style still looks sleek, and the fact that there's a Turbo badge on the back means that this five-door, family-friendly shooting brake will still out-accelerate most cars on the road. Inside, the Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo wagon offers more space and is an overall easier car to live with daily. It comes at a very high price, though. We're wagon lovers, and we feel Porsche has built this for that kind of buyer. Whether it's practical or not likely won't factor, but if you're an early adopter of EV tech and want something unique, you can't do much better than this.

What's the Price of the 2022 Porsche Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo Wagon?

EVs are expensive in general, but you're going to have to fork over a serious amount of cash to get behind the wheel of a 2022 Porsche Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo. The price of the Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo starts at an MSRP of $153,500 excluding tax, registration, and a destination fee of $1,350. The Turbo S starts at $187,600. The options list requires exercising extreme caution - we managed to spec a Turbo S model to over $260,000 and there were still more options to add to it at that point. To partially soften the blow of these sky-high prices, the Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo does at least qualify for a federal tax credit of up to $7,500 in the USA.

What 2022 Porsche Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo Model Should I Buy?

This is already one seriously capable car, but Porsche offers some interesting options that make this EV sports car even better. We'd get the base Turbo with the Performance Package if we were buying, which adds dynamic chassis control, the Sport Chrono Package, Porsche Electric Sport Sound, and rear-axle steering for $5,400. The $5,300 Technology Package is also a solid choice and adds a passenger display, a head-up display, active parking support, and adaptive cruise control. However, it also requires power-folding mirrors and a surround-view camera so the price actually goes up by $6,830. Ventilated front seats are a steal at $850, and a heated GT sport steering wheel will cost you only $280. For those not too worried about the final price tag, we'd suggest going for the excellent Burmester 3D high-end surround sound system, but be careful with your spending as the Turbo Cross Turismo can quickly creep into Turbo S territory. We'd rather have the added performance of the Turbo S if the price difference becomes slim between the two.

2022 Porsche Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo vs Porsche Cayenne Turbo

These two vehicles have one thing in common: they both shocked Porsche fans when they were first revealed. The Cayenne was Porsche's first foray into the world of SUVs and has proven to be massively successful. The Cayenne is not available in an all-electric guise just yet, but its SUV body style means it's one of the most practical Porsches around. The Cayenne Turbo starts significantly cheaper than the Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo at under $130,000 and features a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine producing 541 hp and 567 lb-ft of torque. This means the Cayenne Turbo is the slower vehicle, but out in the real world, it still feels insanely fast. It also offers a longer cruising range (over 400 miles in a mix of city and highway driving). There's more interior space and significantly more cargo space on offer in the Cayenne, too. It doesn't feel as composed in the corners but is just as comfortable to drive. If you're looking for lots of practicality and pace, then the Cayenne Turbo is hard to beat, but if you're an early adopter of EVs and want something dynamically gifted, the Porsche Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo wagon is spectacular.

2022 Porsche Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo vs Tesla Model S Plaid

When Porsche first launched the Taycan, it was clear that it would go head to head with the Tesla Model S. Now that the Cross Turismo is here, that threat has doubled. The Cross Turismo isn't necessarily a direct competitor for the Model S, but it does get closer to the Tesla's levels of practicality. The Model S is still the performance king in this segment. The Model S Plaid starts at $129,990 and blows the Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo out of the water when it comes to performance. This 1,020-hp, 1,050-lb-ft electric monster will sprint to sixty in only 1.99 seconds and cross the quarter-mile in 9.23 seconds - in very specific conditions. Real-world times haven't always matched those figures but the Plaid is clearly quicker than the Porsche. The claimed range of this mega-machine is close to 400 miles, destroying the Taycan Turbo. Interior space isn't as remarkable, but you still get a large trunk that measures 25 cubic feet. At the price, there's still very little that can beat this Tesla.
