This Is How To Make A Statement With The BMW iX

TheBMW iXis an incredibly important vehicle for the German marque. BMW's top-selling models in the US last year were theX3and X5 SUVs, so the iX will be looking to replicate that success with electric power alone. Initial demand for the electric SUVhas been strongdespite its polarizing styling.

It gives us an idea of the colors and options that could be offered on iX models in North America, as well as the chance to see if the controversial SUV looks better in some colors than others. In Malaysia, the base model is the iX xDrive40 which can be finished in a choice of five colors.

These are Alpine White and metallics like Black Sapphire, Sophisto Grey Brilliant effect, Phytonic Blue, and Blue Ridge Mountain. The Sophisto Grey seems to best mask the effect of the large kidney grille; of course, these aren't actually grilles but are simply a design element to link the iX to the rest of the BMW family. The grille does house sensors for theSUV's driver-assist features, though. 21-inch wheels are standard on the base model and look pretty good. Inside, there's a choice of SensaTec upholstery in either Black or Mocha.

The iX40 Sport commands attention with its 22-inch wheels, more aggressive bumpers, and black exterior trim. It also adds the option of BMW Individual colors like Storm Bay metallic and Aventurine Red metallic.

We configured an iX40 Sport in the shoutiest spec we could come up with. That meant going for the Aventurine Red paint, the Castanea interior, and the BMW Iconic package which includes BMW i Blue seatbelts. It may not be the prettiest SUV around but the iX definitely makes a statement, which means it fits in perfectly with other members of the BMW family like the new i4 and the M3/M4 twins.

In the US, the iX xDrive50 starts from $83,200 but the initial allocation of models scheduled for a June 2022 delivery is sold out.
