2019 Infiniti Q60

A ten-color palette is available for the Q60 range, mimicking the palette set for the entire Infiniti range, including the Sport-specific Dynamic Sunstone Red on the Red Sport 400. The following basic colors are available throughout the range: Pure White, Liquid Platinum, Graphite Shadow, Hagane Blue, Iridium Blue, and Black Obsidian, while three premium colors can be had for an extra $500: Majestic White, Solar Mica, and Midnight Black.

With the discontinuation of the inline-four engine from the previous year, the 2019 range boasts an enthusiastic twin-turbo V6 that makes 300 hp and 295 pound-feet of torque in the bottom two models. At the top end of the spectrum is the racy Red Sport 400, with an upgraded engine with a bigger air-intake that results in 400 hp and 350 lb-ft torque. The bigger engine results in a fast vehicle that achieves the 0-60 sprint in five seconds. In contrast to the top-of-the-range rivals from Audi and Mercedes respectively, the Q60 provides more power than the Audi A5 but pales in comparison to what the Mercedes C-Class has to offer.

The Q60 range is equipped with rear-wheel-drive as standard but can be upgraded to all-wheel drive for each of the available trims. The fastest vehicle in the range, the Red Sport 400 offers much more power and performance than both the Audi A5 and Mercedes C-Class, however, is bested by their in-house performance divisions, Audi Sport and AMG.

Based on a 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbo engine across the range, the 3.0t Pure and 3.0t Luxe produce 300 hp and makes 295 lb-ft torque. On the top-end trim, the Red Sport 400 is given an upgraded engine that feeds more air through the system to churn out 400 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. Both engine types are mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission, which offers smooth and seamless transitions at higher speeds. Lower speeds and stop-go traffic conditions tend to belabor the transmission and sets it up to hunt for the right gear.

The Red Sport 400 trim is equipped with paddle shifters for a more hands-on approach. Acceleration is pleasant though, with immediate throttle responses and an impressive ability to overtake from cruising speeds. This vehicle was designed to be unleashed on the open road and fares much better there than in an urban setting. Both available powertrains are impressive, although not the best in class, and offer a substantial amount of pull at take off, and accelerates rapidly when commanded to.

The Red Sport model is the most competent, however, released with Dynamic Digital Suspension which enhances handling capabilities even more. Direct Adaptive Steering can be equipped optionally, but we advise against this as the system leads to an unnatural sense of disconnectedness. This also results in a lack of feedback through the steering, which requires the continued selection of Sport+ mode in order to feel in tune with the road, but by virtue of artificial weighting. Even without the Adaptive Steering selected, the Q60 requires a lot of mid-cornering input to keep it on track, and steering, in general, is harder work than on many rivals.

Despite this, the Q60 offers excellent braking capabilities, which are brilliantly calibrated to react to pedal pressure. Emergency braking, although precise, did leave its tell-tale smell in the air when floored quite hard. With the exception of the wandering steering wheel, the coupe offers a pleasant drive on the highway (read, in a straight line).

Due to the inclusion of larger engines in the Q60 line-up and the lack of smaller displacement options, fuel efficiency for the Q60 isn't the best in class, and in fact, is less impressive than what the Audi A5 and Mercedes C-Class have to offer. The entry-level 3.0t Pure produces the same gas mileage estimates as the Luxe variant, at 19/28/22 mpg on the city/highway/combined cycles. In the all-wheel-drive configuration, these trims drop one point for highway driving, coming in at 19/27/22 mpg. With the more powerful Red Sport 400 achieving similar figures, the 400-hp engine on the latter trim achieves 20/27/22 mpg in rear wheel drive, and 19/26/21 mpg when equipped with all-wheel drive. All models have a 20-gallon fuel tank, and as such, the Pure and Luxe models have a total range of 440 miles, while the Red Sport 400 AWD manages just a little less at 420 miles per tank of premium unleaded fuel.

The interior of the Q60 is an interesting combination of superb space and comfort in the front, and a tight, less pleasant experience in the rear. Front seats are spacious and supportive, with lots of room for long-legged passengers. The rear seats are not ideal for taller passengers or adults in general, although short trips shouldn't be too unpleasant. Seating positions are also quite high, so six-foot occupants may find the headroom a little restrictive. The cabin itself is very well appointed, however, with a variety of soft-touch materials and high-quality fabrics throughout. Very much on par with rivals in terms of build quality and materials, the only negatives are a dated look and a troublesome infotainment system, which is arguably the worst in this class.

Technically, the Q60 seats four passengers, although the back seat is so restrictive that most adults would not be particularly comfortable unless the front occupants shifted their seats forward to create a bit more leg room in the back. Kids would probably find the back seat adequate, and wouldn't require the headroom which is sorely lacking - the standard compromise of a coupe. By contrast, the front seats are comfortable and roomy, providing ample shoulder and elbow room as well. Forward visibility for the driver is fine, thanks to large windows, but rear visibility is hindered by broad pillars at the back and make blind spot monitors and parking sensors almost essential. Roominess in the cabin is definitely not a strong point for the Q60, but is that really the aim of a coupe in the long run?

At only 8.7 cubic feet of cargo volume, the Q60 offers below average trunk space, even for a coupe. Both the Audi A5 and Mercedes C-Class offer better dimensions in this regard. Inside the cabin, storage space for small items is just about average - there are slender door pockets for keys and perhaps a slim smartphone, two cupholders near the armrest, and a generous center console bin. The glovebox is average, to say the least, and in the rear, an armrest contains a small tray and two cupholders. Whilst perhaps not the most important aspect of a coupe vehicle, rivals do offer more in terms of trunk space and small item storage.

A number of additional driver aids and safety features need to be additionally purchased by means of the ProASSIST or ProACTIVE packages.

In terms of infotainment, all three trim levels boast a dual-screen infotainment center with an upper eight-inch screen and lower seven-inch monitor which are responsible for different systems and tasks. Although offering radio, Bluetooth audio streaming and AUX/USB input options, the lack of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility is frustrating, as the basic system is clumsy and offers not only outdated graphics but confusing screens and menus with delayed responses as well. The lower screen tends to be more intuitive to use, but the map graphics are grainy on the upper monitor. For the Luxe model, a premium sixteen-speaker Bose surround sound system is added, and on the top-end of the range, the Red Sport boasts navigation with lane guidance and voice destination entry.

Scoring three out of five on the J.D. Power Predicted Reliability rating, the Q60 is noted as being average among its peers. There are no recalls for anything pertaining to the current Q60 and its variations, and no official complaints logged, suggesting buyers are happy overall. The Q60 is covered by a four-year/60,000 mile basic warranty and a six-year/70,000 mile powertrain warranty. A seven-year/unlimited mile corrosion warranty is also included for the range.

The NHTSA has not yet released safety ratings for the 2019 Q60, and similarly, the IIHS has no scores to offer either. However, based on the Q50 which performed admirably with the IIHS, it's fair to assume the Q60 is relatively safe in the grand scheme of things.

The Q60 is not a terrible car, but it cannot be labeled as a great car either. We'd settle for calling it an average luxury small vehicle, featuring a lovely (albeit dated) cabin with comfortable front seats, two powerful engine options, and a pleasant driving experience that admittedly, does very little to blow the driver away. Handling is less than impressive, although the ride comfort is soft and comfortable. With limited trunk space and a cramped rear seat added to the clumsy infotainment system, there seem to be a few more negatives than positives for this vehicle. Although definitely not the worst coupe on the road, it ranks in the lower end of the segment overall, and in comparison to main competitors the Q60 just doesn't live up to the high standard set by the likes of the Audi A5 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupes, or the driver-focused BMW 4 Series.

The 3.0t Pure base model is the cheapest in the range and has a listed MSRP of $40,850 in the rear-wheel-drive configuration. At the midpoint of the range, the Luxe trim is priced at $45,000, while the fully-loaded Red Sport 400 leaps ahead by $10,000 and costs $55,000, the most expensive of the three trims. These prices exclude a destination charge of $995 and do not take any additional packages into account. To upgrade any of the available trims to all-wheel-drive further lifts the price by $2,000 for each model.

The Q60 is available in three basic models, equipped in rear-wheel drive as standard with the option of upgrading to all-wheel drive. Both the entry-level model named the 3.0t Pure, and the mid-range 3.0t Luxe share a 3.0-liter V6 engine and are equipped with only the basic safety features, such as airbags and a rearview monitor on the bottom spec, and emergency braking with forward collision warning on the Luxe. All models feature dual-screen infotainment systems, however, only the top model has standard navigation. The Luxe model also offers a sixteen-speaker premium sound system and a power moonroof that can tilt and slide. At the top of the range, the Red Sport 400 upgrades to a twin-turbo 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine that produces 400 hp, has dynamic suspension and some cosmetic enhancements that distinguish it as the fully-loaded sport version. This includes 20-inch wheels, Red 'S' badging and semi-aniline seats that are heated in the front.

Various packages are available for the Luxe and Red Sport variants. The base model is released standard without any option to expand features or enhance appearance. For the Luxe model, a premium paint package, as well as a leather seating bundle, can be purchased, but more importantly, this trim offers both the Essential package and the ProASSIST package. The former adds on navigation, voice recognition, heated front seats and steering wheel, auto-dimming exterior mirrors and remote engine start at a cost of $3,200. The ProASSIST bundle is almost a necessity as it equips the vehicle with features that are standard on rivals, such as around view monitor with pedestrian detection, blind spot warning, backup collision intervention, and front and rear parking sensors. This is priced at an extra $2,250.

On the Red Sport 400, cosmetic bundles that can be added include a leather seating package and a silver optic fiber interior trim bundle. The ProACTIVE package is available to add on for $2,850, but cannot be equipped unless the aforementioned ProASSIST package has already been installed. The ProACTIVE package is comprised of direct adaptive steering, blind spot intervention, cruise control, distance control assist, lane departure warning and prevention, and active lane control. Furthermore, front lighting with high beam assist is added, as well as an advanced climate control system.

With the entry-level model being under-equipped in terms of safety features, driver aids, and onboard technology, the remaining two options can be weighed up for their value for money. At the top of the range, the Red Sport 400 costs a whopping $10k more than the Luxe and potentially requires additional packages to be equipped at thousands of dollars more. The mid-range Luxe, by contrast, offers ample power, a premium sound system, moonroof, and basic automatic emergency braking, and even when adding the ProASSIST bundle still comes out under $50,000 in total. That's why it's our recommended trim as, if you must buy a Q60 Coupe, it strikes the best balance of value for money.

The base model C 300 is priced at around $3,000 more than the Q60 but has many more standard features included and numerous optional extras which the base model Q60 does not have access to at all. The entry-level C Class even has the option of ventilated and heated seats, and a much more refined cabin with cutting-edge technologies. Although the C class range is equipped with a less powerful engine, a 2.0-liter engine that produces 45 hp less than what the Q60 does, it achieves better gas mileage estimates and offers performance that belies the numbers. It's more dynamically talented too, competent through the corners and refined everywhere else. The C-Class has a bigger trunk, but the interior cabin room remains similar on both vehicles. The Mercedes, with a much more engaging drive, better handling, and superb ride quality, as well as vastly improved feature content and availabiility, comes out on top in this comparison.

A firm favorite in the luxury small car segment, the Audi A5 beats the Q60 on many fronts, not least of which include a recently redesigned interior, numerous standard safety and convenience features, leather seats and sunroof as standard on even the base model, and a much more spacious trunk area. Although a smaller 2.0-liter engine on the A5 means slightly less power, output figures are still satisfying and turn out brilliant fuel economy rates as an added bonus. The Audi also handles with classic German accuracy, where the Q60 scores much lower. The only area where the Q60 leads is in the standard equipping of the more powerful V6 engine, something available on the more potent S5 and RS5 derivatives from Audi. This is still not sufficient reason to choose the Infiniti over the Audi, however, and the result is as expected: Audi reigns supreme.
