2019 BMW 4 Series Coupe

The BMW 4 Series is a luxury sports coupe that competes withMercedes-Benz's C-Class Coupe,Audi's A5 Coupe, and theLexus RC350. For this BMW compact coupe, its unique selling point is sheer driver appeal, or at least that's what BMW would have us believe. The 2019 model comes in two models: 430i and 440i. They are both available in either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and have an eight-speed automatic transmission, with the rear-wheel-drive models available with an optional six-speed manual transmission. The 430i is powered by a 2.0 liter, twin-turbo four-cylinder engine, which makes 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The more potent 440i is powered by a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine which makes 320 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque. Despite being renamed and restyled, though, the 4 Series is still - for all intents and purposes -a 3 Series Coupe.

Since the 4 Series was recently facelifted, there aren't many differences between the 2018 and 2019 models. In its standard form the 4 Series is a conservative, yet handsome looking car with upswept headlights flanking the trademark BMW kidney grille. The side profile is sleek and flowing although the rear looks a bit plain. With the M-Sport kit, it changes into an aggressive looking monster ready to tear up the tarmac. Both trims ride on standard 18-inch wheels, but larger 19-inch options are available in various styles.

The 4 Series has a wheelbase of 110.6 inches and a length of 182.7 inches. The width is 71.9 inches excluding the mirrors and the height is 54.2 inches. All models have a ground clearance of 5.1 inches. The 430i has a base curb weight of 3,541 lbs on the rear-wheel-drive model equipped with the manual gearbox and 1,574 lbs with the eight-speed auto, while selecting an AWD variant pushes the mass up to 3,697 lbs. Those increase on the 440i, which has a curb weight of 3,704 lbs on the rear-wheel-drive model and 3,827 lbs on the all-wheel-drive model.

BMW offers a wide array of colors to customize your 4 Series, with all the colors carrying over from 2018. Jet Black and Alpine White are regular colors and come at no extra charge. The metallic colors, including Carbon Black, Black Sapphire, Melbourne Red, Imperial Blue, Sunset Orange, Snapper Rocks Blue, Jatoba Brown, Estoril Blue, and more come at a cost of cost $550. BMW Individual offers an even wider selection of colors to further personalize the 4-series. These include Smoked Topaz Metallic, Champagne Quartz Metallic, Tanzanite Blue Metallic, and Citrin Black Metallic. There's almost no point to getting these, however, as the Snapper Rocks Blue option is truly special and exclusive to the 4 Series.

If you're looking for outright performance from a BMW product in the 4 Series range, the M4 takes the cake, but as that's reviewed as a standalone performance model with a hefty price tag attached, most buyers would be better off suited to the 340i. Available in both rear- and all-wheel-drive, the 340i's turbocharged six-cylinder enables a 0-60 mph sprint in just 4.6 seconds in xDrive guise, with the RWD variant sacrificing two-tenths for the sake of driver enjoyment. The four-cylinder 430i twins sacrifice performance, but not substantially, running the same sprint in 5.5 seconds on both drivetrains. Some rivals - like Mercedes and Lexus share the BMW's choice of drivetrains, but some like Audi only offer all-wheel-drive.

Two trims each boast their own engine choice in the BMW 4 Series, with the base 430i powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-pot developing 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The 440i swaps this out for an extra pair of cylinders as a single-turbo six-cylinder displacing 3.0 liters and producing 326 hp and 332 lb-ft. Regardless of which engine you choose, an eight-speed ZF-sourced automatic gearbox is standard fare, however, as a no-cost party-trick, RWD models can be equipped with a six-speed manual for a do-it-yourself alternative. Despite what the internet might say, don't buy the manual - it's not half as great as it's hyped up to be, and the 4 Series is better suited to the simply exceptional eight-speed auto.

Regardless of the engine choice, there's an ample amount of power on tap. Getting up to speed is simple, overtaking even easier, and the responses from the turbocharged engines are exceptional. The 440i's six-pot simply gives you more - more acceleration, more responsiveness, more noise, and should you be daring enough, more oversteer. The automatic gearbox is one of the best in the business, responding instantly to throttle inputs and preemptively selecting the right gear almost telepathically.

BMW coupes were once the darlings of the automotive world, a purists' driving dream with some of the sharpest handling dynamics around. But sadly, BMW has lost its way in recent years. That doesn't mean the 4 Series is terrible to drive - it's still a proper machine that will take you through a curving mountain pass with a smile on your face, and it'll likely be quicker than many a rival, but BMW has lost the involvement factor that made them such phenomenal cars. The suspension errs on the firmer side of things, but it's generally well-damped and pliant on most surfaces. However, under duress, the rebound damping is a little too firm and springy, leading to an awkward cork-screwing sensation under load. Drive it at nine-tenths, though, and you'll find little way to fault the ride.

But if you'll find fault, it'll be in the 4's steering. Direct, light enough for day to day use, and weighted enough for spirited driving, it seems like a perfect recipe, but it's one of the least impressive electronic power systems on the market. Feedback is non-existent and the numbness on turn-in is a let-down. Other manufacturers pull off the electrically assisted setup far better, which is a key aspect showing BMW's lack of focus towards driver-engagement.

Fuel economy on a sports coupe might seem like a trivial thing, but on a car like the BMW 4 Series, which can easily be used as a daily driver, it makes all the difference. The 430i gets economy figures of 24/34/27 mpg city/highway/combined while the 440i achieves 21/32/25 mpg. Adding an xDrive suffix to either model drops the figures to 23/33/27 mpg and 21/31/24 mpg respectively. That makes the base 430i the most efficient, allowing for a maximum range of 458 miles from the 15.8-gallon fuel tank in mixed driving conditions.

BMW familiarity runs strong inside the 4 Series interior, with the design being almost imperceptibly different to that of the 3 Series sedan, or the bigger 5 Series. It's not the worst concept though, as BMW drivers old and new will instantly feel at home behind the wheel. It also means that regardless o which BMW you get behind the wheel of, the materials all feel of the same high quality and all the controls fall easily to hand. At the heart of it all are the available digital instrument clusters, and the iDrive 8.8-inch infotainment system - now with touch functionality. Though capable of seating four, the coupe nature of the 4 Series means that headroom is scant and accessing the rear perches is a cumbersome affair. Still, the BMW manages te feat easier than many rival coupes, and the rear seats aren't entirely unusable.

The 4 Series is also strictly a four-seater with the middle of the rear seat occupied by a storage tray and armrest. The front seats also boast a large amount of power adjustment, and they sit low in the chassis for an ideally cosseted driving position. Ingress and egress can prove a little tricky, though, not because of the position of the seats but because the long doors aren't ideal for tight parking spaces.

BMW offers a stunning range of colors and materials to personalize the 4 Series and with so many combinations on offer, buyers can create something truly unique. The 430i comes standard with imitation leather, otherwise known as Sensatec in BMW lingo, or genuine Dakota leather, which apparently isn't as good a Nappa or Merino leather, but still looks great. The Sensatec can be had in black with red stitching, plain black, and Venetian Beige with black stitching. In the leather range, there's Ivory White with Dark Oyster Highlight, Black with red stitching, Coral Red with black stitching, black with Dark Oyster Highlight, Mocha, black with blue stitching, Cognac with brown highlights, Cognac with dark brown highlights and Cognac lower dash, and Night Blue.

Interior trims available are Fineline Anthracite Wood, Aluminum Dark Carbon, and Burr Walnut trim with Pearl Gloss Chrome highlight, Aluminum Hexagon trims with Estoril Blue matte highlight or black gloss highlight, Ash Grain Wood trim with metal inlay and Pearl Gloss Chrome highlight. BMW Individual offers Dark Red Sycamore Wood trim, Piano Finish Black, and White Ash Grain Wood.

Sports coupes aren't renowned for their brilliant cargo space, but in the case of the 4 Series, it's decent and actually better than most of the competitors in its class. The trunk space measures 15.7 cubic feet in size and it has a passthrough slot to fit longer items. The rear seats also fold flat in a 40/20/40 split for extra practicality, and the load floor is generally flat and practical enough to accommodate several carry-on sized bags.

Other than the trunk, there's also a glove box, rear storage tray, front and rear cupholders, front seatback storage, and front door pockets.

Standard fare includes rear parking sensors, cruise control, a power sunroof, automatic LED headlights, a rearview camera, auto-dimming mirrors, dual-zone climate control, and ten-way power-adjustable seats, while the 440i gets access to a little extra in the way of keyless ignition. For 2019 BMW has finally made Apple CarPlay a standard feature for the infotainment system, but with only one year's subscription, and buyers will have to pay after that. The 2019 model retains the same 8.8-inch display as before, but there's still no sign of Android Auto anywhere. What is does have is BMW's iDrive, a nine-speaker sound system on the 430i, Bluetooth connectivity, a CD player, a USB port, HD Radio, and two subwoofers. The 440i gets upgraded to a Harman Kardon 16-speaker premium audio system and SiriusXM Satellite Radio with a one-year subscription. The Harman Kardon system s also available as an option on the 430i.

There have been no complaints about the 2019 4 Series, but for 2019 models there have been three recalls. Problems range from crankshaft sensor firmware potentially causing a stall to knee airbags not properly deploying, or in the case of three vehicles, the front passenger airbag being improperly manufactured.

As with most BMWs, the 4 Series has a combined basic and powertrain warranty of four year/50,000 miles, as well as a corrosion and perforation warranty that's 12 years with unlimited mileage. BMW Ultimate Care lasts for three years/36,000 miles to take care of servicing, and there is also a four year/unlimited mileage roadside assistance.

Both the IIHS and the NHTSA have no test results for the 4 Series. Since the 4 Series is closely related to the 3 Series, it's expected to perform in a similar manner, with the sedan scoring an overall NHTSA score of five stars and an IIHS Top Safety Pick award. Its two-door bodyshell should also provide greater structural rigidity than a four-door sedan.

While many manufacturers work on making advanced safety features standard, at least on their higher variants, the 4 Series is based on an aging platform that looks set to see out its lifespan with blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control relegated to the options list. Standard safety equipment isn't too bad, though, comprising a rearview camera, parking sensors, eight airbags including dual front knee airbags, and standard stability control, ABS brakes, and EBD.

Compact luxury coupes are tricky business. You need to strike the right balance of enough luxury but also just enough compromise on comfort for the sake of performance. It's in the latter case where BMW fails, as the 4 Series really doesn't seem to behave any differently to a 3 Series - it merely looks sleeker. However, it's decently practical, well-built, has a pair of wonderful engines, and impressive levels of composure. It's by no means the worst of the sports coupe clan, but it is feeling its age now, and rivals like the Audi A5 are providing more contemporary offerings, while the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, with its bespoke rear suspension, just feels more naturally athletic, yet still more luxurious. The fact that Mercedes has managed to outgun BMW dynamically is a testament to how far BMW has fallen from the best driver's car around.

The rear-wheel-drive 430i starts an MSRP of $44,800, and the all-wheel-drive model starts at $46,800. The rear-wheel-drive 440i starts at $51,200 while the xDrive-equipped 440i carries a base MSRP of $53,200.These prices exclude the registration, taxes and licensing fees, not to mention the destination fee.

BMW's 4 Series range is sold in two derivatives, with each boasting rear- and all-wheel-driven sub-trims, making it a total of four options: 430i, 430i xDrive, 440i, and 440i xDrive. 430i derivatives are sold with a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder, while the 440i gets a turbocharged inline-six. An eight-speed automatic gearbox is standard on both, but a six-speed manual is a no-cost option for the RWD models.

Both models are similarly equipped, with the 430i equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, a power sunroof, auto-dimming mirrors, parking sensors, dual-zone automatic climate control, ten-way power-adjustable front seats, and an 8.8-inch infotainment screen with navigation, Apple CarPlay, HD radio, and a nine-speaker sound system.

Standard on the 440i, and optional on the 430i, are keyless entry and ignition, leather upholstery as opposed to simulated leather, satellite radio, and a premium 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound system.

There's a wide range of additional packages available to improve features, looks, as well as performance. There are also many standalone add-ons that can be added.

There's the M Sport Package which changes the suspension, steering, and brakes, but can only be used with non-run-flat tires. Also included are specific exterior and interior styling cues The Convenience Package adds detection, lumbar support, and heated front seats, and costs $1,100.

Some of the standalone options include the adaptive M suspension at $700, the Harman Kardon sound system at $700, wireless charging at $500, digital instrument cluster at $350, and heated seats at $500.

There truly isn't a bad 4 Series, as all models are well equipped and both engines are some of the best around. While the allure for many will be on outright power - and you wouldn't be unhappy with the extra punch from the 440i - we'd suggest most buyers look to the 430i. The 2.0-liter turbo motor is smooth and punchy, and when paired with rear-wheel-drive is just the right amount of fun without being unruly. We'd opt for leather upholstery, the M Sport Package for style and a sportier chassis, and the stylish digital instrument cluster. Audiophiles will definitely want the 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system too.

Nearly every car that BMW makes has a direct rival from its German counterpart Mercedes-Benz, and 4 Series is no different. The C300 Coupe is a worthy challenger to 4 Series and comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a nine-speed automatic transmission. It makes 241 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque, compared to the 430i's 248 hp four-cylinder engine. Both are available in either rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive, and while the BMW might have slightly better driving dynamics when looking at on-paper data, the Mercedes has a sense of occasion and an intuitive feel that's somewhat lacking in the BMW.

In terms of practicality, the Mercedes has some better technology features and driver aids available, but most of them come at a high price premium. The BMW has more interior space, especially for rear passengers, as well as more cargo space. Both are fantastic cars, but the Mercedes edges ahead by having more features available.

Audi's A5 has only one engine option, a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission, which makes 248 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque compared the 430i's 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. Unlike the BMW, this Audi is only available in all-wheel-drive and has no manual transmission option. Also, it only has one engine variant, which can match the 430i but will get blown away by the 440i. To rival the 40i you'd need to opt for the S5 instead.

Where the Audi excels is by having the right balance of performance and technology features, compared to the BMW, which is more performance biased. The Audi has a better infotainment unit, featuring both Android Auto and Apple Carplay. Its cabin architecture is superior too. The truth is, the 4 Series is dated while its rivals have moved on. The A5 is more contemporary and a better all-rounder.
