This year, the handsome Infiniti Q60 Coupe celebrates its 30th anniversary in the United States. While it wasn't known by that name at first, earning its Q60 badge in 2016 as a concept vehicle, its G-series predecessor brought with it the JDM heritage that today's model endeavors to uphold. With a mighty 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 under the hood, available in two states of tune, for either 300 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque or 400 hp and 350 lb-ft, outputs are routed via a seven-speed automatic gearbox to either the rear wheels or all four. Despite the segment now taking on a more family-friendly approach to a two-door sports coupe, competition is still ruthless with high-ranking rivals such as the Audi A5,BMW 4 Series, and even theMercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe. While the Q60 may be one of the better-looking sports coupes here, it certainly isn't one of the most engaging, and in a class where utmost luxury and corner roasting capability is the aim, its sporting looks could come across as a devious facade.

With one look at the Q60, you'll know it means business; it carries a distinctly sporty aesthetic with an undertone of sophistication. Upfront, it sports automatic on/off headlights with integrated daytime running lights, symmetrically angling downward in toward the double-arch grille, which is underscored by an outward angled lower diffuser and LED fog lights, together, making for an alluringly aggressive demeanor. While the base and mid-spec models are equipped with 19-inch split-five spoke alloy wheels, the top-spec model rides with 20-inch sport alloy wheels in unassuming wheel arches. Elongated LED taillights and a black lower diffuser housing dual exhaust tips set off the parting view.

With its compact, two-door sports coupe construction, the Infiniti Q60 carries dimensions very similar to those of many of its core rivals, such as theLexus RC, BMW 4 Series, andAudi A5. Its body length spans 184.4 inches, which - while a little shorter than both the RC and the A5 - is longer than the 182.7-inch 4 Series. The Q60 carries a wheelbase spanning 112.2 inches in length, that's longer than all three rivals. It stands at 54.5 inches in height in RWD, raising up to 54.9 inches in AWD, on par with the RC. Its body width of 72.8 inches makes it wider than all but the A5. Curb weights range from 3,747 lbs with the base-spec RWD trim to 4,047 lbs with the top-spec AWD trim, pegging it as one of the heavier coupes of the lot.

The Infiniti Q60 can be had in one of nine exterior colors, the cost-inclusive options available across the lineup include Pure White, Liquid Platinum, Graphite Shadow, and Black Obsidian, all of which the Pure model is limited to. For both the Luxe and Red Sport 400, there's also Hagane Blue, Iridium Blue, Majestic White, and Midnight Black, the latter carrying an additional charge of $595. Exclusively available to the Red Sport 400 is Dynamic Sunstone Red, available at a cost of $800. The Q60 looks great in the darker colors which contrast the best with its black and chrome exterior accents.

Turbocharged V6 power is shared across the lineup once again this model year, ceded from a familiar 3.0-liter twin-turbo mill that's coupled to a seven-speed automatic gearbox. It's offered in two states of tune. For the Pure and Luxe models, it makes 300 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, but in the Red Sport 400, it's dialed up and upgraded with a larger air-intake to muster 400 hp and 350 lb-ft. While the Q60 is theoretically capable of running with sportier rivals such as the BMW M4 on power alone, it lacks the apt handling dynamics to truly challenge them as an actual driver's car.

With the capped engine and the standard rear-wheel drive system in play, the Q60 performs rather impressively on a straight; acceleration from 0-60 mph ensues in an impressive 5.2 seconds according to the manufacturer's specs, dropping to around 5.5 seconds with the AWD system swapped in. With the dialed-up engine in play, the Q60 Red Sport 400 has been recorded achieving a 0-60 mph sprint time between 4.5 and five seconds - that shows up the BMW 4 Series 440i xDrive with its top sprint time of 4.6 seconds.

While the more powerful V6 engine is relegated to only the top-spec Red Sport 400 trim, the lesser V6 in the Pure and Luxe is still a more than competent mill for some straight-line thrills. With 300 hp and 295 lb-ft always at hand, acceleration from the base engine is consistently strapping, pulling away from a standstill is rapid, and the healthy supply of torque carries that vigor through to the upper ranges of the rev counter. The dialed-up V6, with its 400 hp and 350 lb-ft, pretty much compounds on this. Both powertrains have the Q60 feel better suited to the open road though, where the immediate throttle responses make for effortlessly smooth overtaking maneuvers - it doesn't really suit short stints between traffic lights. It's on the open road where the seven-speed auto works best as well, while at lower speeds it can feel a little sluggish and out of whack, shift transitions are seamless and intuitively quick once at the mid-range and higher speeds. Overall, both engine options are impressive, though not the most polished within the class, and both offer the enthusiasm wonted from a sports coupe.

Even with the system optioned in, plenty of mid-cornering input is required to keep the Q60 on track. In general, steering in the Q60 is harder work than it is with the competition. Fortunately, braking in the Q60 is a different story: the responses are precise and easy to modulate, whether in town or jaunting it down the highway.

Though the Q60 may not be one of the more enjoyable sports coupes to take on a joy ride, it is one of the more comfortable ones. In fact, it's surprisingly composed and supple at most times. More prominent road imperfections and undulations will have to be traversed carefully, but the ride quality it delivers during everyday driving is suitably relaxed.

Gas mileage returns aren't too much of a concern for sport-oriented vehicles and, usually, for their owners either, but the Q60 is excessively extravagant when it comes to it. With the base V6 engine and standard RWD in place, the Pure and Luxe models will return estimates of 19/28/22 mpg city/highway/combined according to the EPA. Equipping the optional AWD will drop the highway figure down a notch with overall figures coming in at 19/27/22 mpg. Those returns are worse than the Lexus RC's, BMW 4 Series', and the Audi A5's with their respective standard powertrains. Some of those rivals feature 2.0-liter turbocharged motors, however, which will mean they'll fall short on power in comparison to the base Q60. The Red Sport 400 actually proves to be one of the more fuel-efficient vehicles in comparison to the up-tuned models of the competition. In RWD it gets 20/27/22 mpg, while the AWD gets 19/26/21 mpg. A 20-gallon gas tank is standard in all models, giving the Pure and Luxe models a range of around 440 miles, and the Red Sport 400 a range of about 420 miles on a fuel tank.

Seating for up to four passengers is provided for in the Q60, but while the front seats are luxuriously commodious, no adult will find the rear seats very accommodating. Both head and legroom are significantly limited there, so reserving them for children or a scrawny teen is probably the only way to put them to good use. Room upfront is otherwise plentiful, and the eight-way power-adjustability makes finding a suitable seating position as easy as can be. Like any low-slung sports-car, ingress and egress are a bit of a mission, but expectedly so.

In the Pure and Luxe models, leatherette seating upholstery is standard, hued solely in Graphite Black in the Pure, and available in either Graphite Black or Stone in the Luxe. Semi-aniline leatherette upholstery is optional for the Luxe at $1,350, available in either Graphite or Gallery White. In both models, the black cabin constituents are accented with brushed aluminum trim. The Red Sport 400 comes standard with either Monaco Red, Gallery White, or Graphite semi-aniline leather-appointed seats, the latter two being complemented by red contrast stitching. It gets black carbon-fiber cabin trim and aluminum foot pedals, too. A leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear shift knob are standard in all.

Practicality isn't really a priority within the sports coupe sector, but the Q60's 8.7 cubes of trunk capacity is significantly limited even for the class, with most competitors offering more than ten cubes on average, and the BMW 4 Series leading with 15.7 cubes. The Q60's 8.7 cubes is enough for about a laptop case and gym bag, a bag or two of groceries, and maybe even a single set of golf clubs. The rear seat bench does fold down relatively flat if more storage room is required, though we don't think anyone will be hauling anything too unwieldy in the luxury coupe.

There are a few places for smaller items in the cabin. Each front door features a bottle holder/storage pocket, there are two cupholders up front and between the rear outboard seats, accompanied by a small-items storage tray. The center armrest cubby is decently sized and the passenger-side glove box is reasonably useful.

Infiniti outfits the Q60 fittingly for a luxury coupe, with the base-spec Pure coming standard with Intelligent Access with push-button start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, a tilt-and-telescoping steering column, eight-way power-adjustable front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, cruise control, and a rearview monitor. Upgrading to the Luxe will see the addition of a power-sliding moonroof and sunshade, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, predictive forward collision warning, and forward emergency braking with pedestrian detection. Luxury levels are maximized in the Red Sport 400, with remote engine start, a heated steering wheel, paddle shifters, a power tilt-and-telescoping steering column, heated front seats, driver-side memory settings, an around-view monitor with moving object detection, front and rear parking sensors, blind-spot warning, and backup collision intervention all coming standard.

In every Q60 model is a split dual-screen infotainment center comprising an HD eight-inch upper touchscreen and seven-inch lower touchscreen. There's a standard radio data system with a CD player with MP3 playback capability. The new Infiniti Intouch system includes both HD and Satellite radio connectivity, Bluetooth audio streaming and hands-free operation, and, new for this model year, both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality. While the Pure is outfitted with a stock six-speaker sound system, the Luxe and the Red Sport 400 feature a premium 13-speaker Bose Performance Series surround-sound audio system. All models feature both a Type A and a Type C USB port and a single 12-volt power outlet. Unfortunately, the system isn't very intuitive, the user interface is confusing and difficult to navigate, and the graphics below par for the class.

Build-wise, the Infiniti Q60 has proven relatively reliable over the years, but the infotainment setup seems to be less stellar. Two recalls, one in 2018 and one in 2019, both pertain to the system failing to display the rearview camera's image. Fortunately, the 2020 year model hasn't exhibited this issue, although a recall was issued for faulty rear seatbelts. Infiniti's coverage is relatively competitive too, offering the Q60 with a four-year/60,000-mile basic warranty and a six-year/70,000-mile powertrain warranty.

It's common that luxury sport vehicles aren't crash tested and this is the case for the Infiniti Q60 too, with neither the NHTSA nor the IIHS evaluating the current-gen model for its crashworthiness.

Infiniti prepares the Q60 favorably with safety measures, a consignment of six standard airbags is standard in every Q60, which is an average standard for the class. Driver-assists are decent though. In the base-spec Pure there's the essentials, such as a rearview camera, advanced vehicle dynamic control with a traction control system, tire pressure monitoring, and ABS, as well as basic cruise control. The Luxe is installed with predictive forward-collision warning and forward emergency braking with pedestrian detection. The more performance prepped Red Sport 400 is additionally equipped with a surround-view monitor with moving object detection, blind-spot warning, reverse collision intervention, and front and rear parking sensors. A blind-spot intervention system, lane departure warning, and lane departure prevention with active lane control are available to the lower-spec models, too.

Rivals such as the Audi A5 and BMW 4 Series are in a league of their own in terms of driver engagement and driving enjoyment. The negatives don't stop there though, with the Q60's frustrating infotainment system also a major downside, its trunk capacity is extremely limited, and the rear seats are mostly useless. All in all, while the Q60 isn't the worst luxury sports coupe out there, but its negatives outweigh its positives, and with so many renowned competitors in the class, that's something that can't be overlooked.

Pricing for the Infiniti Q60 is relatively affordable for the luxury sport coupe class, especially in comparison with high-ranking competitors such as the BMW 4 Series, Audi A5, and Mercedes Benz C-Class. The base-spec Q60 in RWD, the Pure, comes in with a starting MSRP of $41,350, the mid-spec Luxe follows at a price of $45,500. At the top of the lineup, the top-spec Red Sport 400 carries a sticker price of $57,150. It'll cost $2,000 to option any of the models with the available AWD system. All prices are exclusive of any tax, registration, and licensing fees as well as of Infiniti's destination and handling fee of $1,025.

There are three models that make up the Infiniti Q60 lineup, the base-spec Pure, mid-spec Luxe, and the top-spec Red Sport 400. All are equipped with a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine that is, however, upgraded for a higher state of tune in the Red Sport 400. A seven-speed automatic and RWD system are otherwise standard across the lineup, with an AWD system available.

In terms of the features, the Pure boasts elements such as all-LED exterior lighting and 19-inch alloy wheels. There's keyless access with push-button start, eight-way power-adjustable front seats, and dual-zone automatic climate control. A leather-wrapped steering wheel is also standard along with leatherette seating upholstery. An eight and seven-inch dual-split touchscreen and six-speaker sound system cover infotainment, with functionality in Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Cruise control is included.

Upgrades in the Luxe include a power-sliding moonroof and sunshade, predictive forward collision warning, and forward emergency braking with pedestrian detection. The infotainment setup is advanced with a 13-speaker Bose surround-sound audio system.

The new EDITION 30 Package is exclusively available for the Luxe; this merges the Essential and Proassist packages and adds EDITION 30 dark chrome exterior trim, badging, and illuminated kick plates, as well as a black front grille and black mirror caps, all for $4,200.

The Red Sport 400 can be optioned with a $2,850 Proactive Package that comprises direct adaptive steering, high beam assist, advanced climate control system, adaptive front lighting system with auto-leveling headlights, intelligent cruise control with full-speed range, front seat driver/passenger pre-crash seatbelts, blind-spot intervention, an eco pedal, lane departure warning, and lane departure prevention with active lane control, and distance control assist.

Barring its classification as a four-door sedan rather than a two-door coupe, the Infiniti Q50 is essentially the same car in every other way as the Q60. As such, the Q50 is naturally capable of seating up to five passengers with the head and legroom in the rear seats to appropriately accommodate them, and offers more trunk capacity with 13.5 cubes offered behind the rear seats. These elements make the Q50 a better commuter for passengers over the Q60 with its cramped rear cabin and significantly limited trunk capacity. Both vehicles are otherwise identical in every other way, sharing the same positives and negatives too, from the assertive V6 engine options and refined ride quality to the mediocre handling dynamics and frustrating infotainment system. With a starting MSRP of $36,400, the Q50 may be the better value for money buy, especially for a family - the Q60, thanks to its size and sporty aspirations, would be the better drivers car, but for the little it offers in terms of dynamic abilities, we feel the luxury element of the Q range is where the value lies, and in this case, there's more to be had in the Q50.

The Lexus RC is similar to the Infiniti Q60 in that it's focused on aesthetics and luxury, rather than on performance. The base RC engine is a turbocharged four-cylinder, while it isn't nearly as powerful as the Q60's, it is a little more fuel-efficient with EPA gas mileage estimates of 21/30/24 mpg. A larger, 260-hp V6 engine is available for the RC, but it still isn't quite as potent as the Q60's, the Q60, in this case, will be the better offer in terms of straight-line performance. There's a little less room in the RC as well, but with a little more of its body length dedicated to the trunk, there's a more usable 10.4 cubes of cargo room behind the rear seats. Both vehicles offer upscale interiors and many features, but the RC has a more contemporary feel. Ultimately, the RC is the vehicle to go for here, despite the Q60's superior engines, it simply hits a higher mark in premium packaging, which is where these two cars aim to strive.
