This Is The New 2022 Subaru WRX

We all knew that a newSubaru WRXwas coming soon. The household name of winter and rally driving arrived first as the plain old WRX in 2002, and a couple years later came the more powerful and aggressive WRX STI. North America has worked through three generations of the vehicle, and now we know (from Subaru) that the fourth one is coming out later this year as a 2022 model.

Subaru provided this darkened sunset picture and nothing else, and we'll note that automakers have become smarter with these teasers. They've done enough work to the colors that we can't really bring it back in Photoshop. But we tried anyway, and luckily the consumer teaser photo wasn't as protected.

As far as we know, the new WRX will ride onSubaru's Global Platform, which underpins everything from the small Crosstrek to the new Outback and three-row Ascent SUV. That platform should make the new WRX steadier in the straight line, more comfortable and quieter.

We expect the WRX and STI to use the 2.4-liter turbocharged H4 found in the Outback, which is more efficient than the outgoing model's 268 hp, 258 lb-ft, 2.0-liter turbo H4. We're guessing it'll be around 300 hp for the WRX and around 400 hp for the STI. The CVT will stay for the WRX, but a manual will be optional. The STI will stay manual only.

On the new landing page built for the 2022 WRX, Subaru says "the legend of the WRX gets an all-new, even more thrilling chapter. The Subaru WRX world premiere is coming and you'll be able to watch the live unveiling. Sign up to be one of the first to see the powerful, agile, completely redesigned 2022 WRX."

The picture is the same on the new landing site, but it looks like we can glean a few extra details because the photo has just a little more information than the press shot. We can see a red hue and a sloped nose, along with the iconic hood scoop, but we can't quite make out what the headlights are going to look like.

We also don't see a lot of character lines on the upper half. Thankfully, we won't have long to wait. There are several opportunities coming up, including thereturning LA Auto Showin November. If we don't have more info by then, we expect a reveal at one of the biggest North American shows.
