The Gasoline Porsche Macan Won't Live Past 2024

Industry News /2 Comments

The Macan could be one of the shortest-running Porsche nameplates ever.

Having arrived in the United States in 2014, thePorsche Macanhas since been a hot seller for the automaker. Last year, the Macan just about edged out the Cayenne asthe brand's top-selling modelin the US. Despite this, it looks as though the SUV as we know it could end up being one of the shortest-running nameplates in Porsche history. This has nothing to do with it being a bad vehicle and everything to do with the rapid electrification of Porsche's lineup. According toAutocar, it looks as though the gas-powered Macan will only stick around for three more years before it's replaced by a fully electric model.

Macan product line boss Sebastian Staiger was asked about the future of the Macan and suggested that it will be replaced by an all-new electric model in just three years. "There are several limiting factors in a vehicle project," said Staiger. "One of these factors, of course, is legislation. Emission laws are another limiting factor. Today, no final decision has been taken, but we assume 2024 will be the year." By 2024, Staiger was referring to the switchover date between the current Macan and an all-new electric model.

Considering that the new electric Macanmay not be called the Macanat all, that would mean that the nameplate would only have been used for around 10 years. As of today, the Cayenne has been in production for close to 20 years and thePanamerafirst rolled off the production line in 2009.

It's sad news but it's also not unexpected that Porsche would electrify its SUV lineup before its beloved 911, and the brand has been open about an electric Macan being in development. Back in 2018, Porsche said that the 911 would be thelast model in its rangeto transition to a fully electric powertrain. For now, the Macan is still with us and if you want a fast, dynamically talented SUV, you could hardly do better than it. The changes introduced for the 2022 model year include tidier styling and the GTS takes over the mantle as the range-topper. It produces 434 horsepower from its twin-turbo V6 engine and takes as little as 4.1 seconds for the 0-60 sprint. With the knowledge that it may not be around for much longer, the Macan has suddenly become even more desirable.
