2024 Honda Passport

It's been a couple of years since the third-generation Honda Passport was launched in the busy mid-size SUV segment, where it goes up against tough rivals like the Toyota Highlander andKia Telluride. Unlike those, the Passport sticks to a simple two-row layout with a spacious cargo area, leaving Honda's own Pilot for three-row duties. For the 2024 model year, the rugged TrailSport trim is further upgraded, there is a new Black Edition, and the interior has been updated with a new center console. The familiar 280-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine remains. Whether these updates are enough to deal with many excellent rivals remains to be seen, but the Passport is nothing if not a downright sensible option in its class.

The release date for the Honda Passport is scheduled for this fall when it will begin arriving at dealerships in the USA.

Most mid-size SUVs come with a third seating row, whereas the Honda does not. Those options include the classy Mazda CX-90 and the superbly well-rounded Korean twins, the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade. The Mazda begins at $39,595 for the 2024 model, while the Telluride ($35,990) and Palisade ($36,400) are even cheaper.

The Honda Passport's exterior design won't win any beauty contests, but there are many customers who will appreciate the straightforward, fuss-free styling. The most rugged model of all is the TrailSport, which gains standard General Grabber A/Tx tires to help with traction on slippery surfaces. These tires are wrapped in machined 18-inch wheels with Pewter painted highlights.

The new Black Edition comes with a blackout grille and 20-inch alloy wheels with a black-painted finish. This blacked-out treatment is also applied to the headlight trim, side trim, door handles, window trim, and fog light accents. Finally, Black Edition badging is found on the tailgate and grille. The colors for this sporty Honda Passport model are Crystal Black Pearl, Sonic Gray, Platinum White, and Radiant Red. Honda hasn't specified all the colors for the other trims, although a new Diffused Sky Blue will be available for the TrailSport exclusively. The TrailSport also has power-folding mirrors to help it navigate narrow trails, while a heated portion of the windshield prevents wipers from getting frozen in place in particularly freezing conditions.

Standard features that will likely carry over from 2023 include LED headlights, a one-touch power moonroof, a power tailgate, and rear privacy glass.

We don't expect major changes to the Honda Passport's dimensions for 2024 since this is merely a lightly upgraded model. The 2023 version has a length of 189.1 inches, a width of 78.6 inches, and a height of 72.2 inches. All trims sport the same 110.91-inch wheelbase and 8.1 inches of ground clearance, although the TrailSport does have marginally wider front/rear tracks.

Based on the 2023 model, we can expect the curb weight of the Passport to vary between 4,229 and 4,262 pounds.

Honda made no suggestions of an engine change or update for the Passport, so the same 3.5-liter naturally-aspirated V6 will do duty. It produces 280 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque, and every 2024 Passport comes with the brand's Intelligent Variable Torque Management (i-VTM4) all-wheel-drive system. The transmission is a nine-speed automatic with paddle shifters.

Independent testing revealed a quick 0-60 mph time of six seconds, so the Passport won't be found wanting, even when fully loaded. The towing capacity, meanwhile, is an acceptable 5,000 lbs on the current model.

The i-VTM4 system can direct 70% of the V6's torque to the rear axle while also managing 100% of that torque between each rear wheel, depending on the driving situation. The four-mode Intelligent Traction Management system also caters for driving in sand, snow, mud, and on paved roads. For the TrailSport, the off-road-tuned suspension has revised spring rates, optimal damper valve tuning, and upgraded stabilizer bars to improve this variant's articulation.

The gas mileage specs for the new Honda Passport SUV range will likely remain unchanged from 2023, so you can expect 19/24/21 mpg city/highway/combined. With its 19.5-gallon gas tank, the Passport can be driven for about 410 miles between refills. The V6 is happy to run on regular unleaded.

The interior of the Honda Passport is still quite understated, but in typical Honda fashion, the controls are logically presented to the driver. The same eight-inch touchscreen display is found in the dashboard's center, and it's now quite small by modern standards. The usual functionality is included, though, from Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to Bluetooth, HD Radio, and SiriusXM.

The Passport hasn't been left untouched inside, however. All models now have a new center console that has increased width to accommodate a large integrated armrest and expanded storage. A full-size tablet can now be stowed in the center storage bin, while two large smartphones can be placed next to each other in the new storage tray ahead of the shifter.

We expect leather upholstery to cover the seats in every Honda Passport for 2024, as was the case last year, but there are some trim variations in styling and the use of colors. The TrailSport boasts orange contrast stitching on the seats, steering wheel, and door panels, and the TrailSport logo appears on the head restraints of the front seats. The new Black Edition has red-accented perforated leather, red contrast stitching for various elements, and red accent lighting on the center console, doors, and dash. Here, a Black Edition logo is found on the front seats and floor mats. The Black Edition is also fully loaded with features like ventilated front seats and heated rear seats.

Every Passport enjoys standard fitment of the Honda Sensing safety suite with equipment like adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, road departure mitigation, and forward collision warning.

Without a third seating row to worry about, Honda could maximize the Passport's cargo space. Behind the second row, the trunk's volume is 50.5 cubic feet, expanding to double that when the second-row seats are folded.
