Honda Recalls 1.2M Vehicles Over A Feature Drivers Can Live Without

Recall /8 Comments

Honda will start sending recall notification letters to owners starting July 24.

Earlier this year, Honda rolled out a recall for theOdyssey, Passport, and Pilot over side mirrors that could detach. Now, the trio couldn't catch a break as they are back for another round of a recall over a feature that drivers can live without anyway.

In thesafety recall reportby the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Honda recalls close to 1.2 million vehicles following a rear camera view issue. Although this mandatory feature can aid drivers when backing up, persons behind the wheel shouldnot rely solely on safety technologies, especially considering problems like this could occur.

The Japanese automaker saidUS-built Odyssey minivanunits with model years 2018 to 2023 are likely affected. Meanwhile, the brand'sentries into the crossover segment, the 2091-2022 Pilot and the 2019-2023Passport, are part of the recall.

According to the safety report, the Media Oriented Systems Transport (MOST) communication coaxial cable was improperly designed and manufactured. In turn, the defect causes a poor or loss of connection between the audio display unit and the vehicle cable connector.

Moreover, the rearview camera will fail if the MOST unit is said to be lost for more than 20 seconds. Drivers may hear popping or crackling sounds or see the audio screen flickering when the defect occurs.

Losing the car's rearview camera increases the risk of a crash or injury. Another reason drivers shouldn't rely on it is the limited view that doesn't show traffic coming from the left or right.

It was in February 2019 when Honda received a quality report on audio and display flickering issues. One of the remedies was the installation of a waterproof coupling starting February 11, 2021. And on June 8 this year, the automaker conducted a safety and noncompliance recall.

Honda received 273,870 warranty claims for the backup camera issue between May 2017 and June 2023. No injuries or deaths related to the point were reported.

From July 24 to August 2, 2023, owners will receive a recall notification.
