2024 Hyundai Elantra First Look Review: Good, Better, Best

It's been three years since the seventh generation of the Hyundai Elantra went on sale in the USA, and the time has come for theHonda Civicsedan rival to undergo a refresh. Hyundai takes its mid-cycle updates seriously, and the same is true for the Elantra, which now comes with revised styling, improved safety equipment, and nicer interior materials. The list of changes is too long to summarize in just a few sentences - the automaker is clearly determined not to lose ground to its Japanese rivals. For the new model year, there are also four engine choices to cover all the bases, and there is a high-performanceElantra Nthat we review separately.

When Is The Hyundai Elantra Coming Out?

The release date for the Hyundai Elantra has been set for the fall of 2023, so we expect the online configurator to be updated imminently.

2024 Hyundai Elantra Price And Competition

Hyundai has not shared the price for the 2024 Elantra yet, but it should be a little more expensive than the 2023 model, which starts at $20,950 and increases to $27,500 for the N Line. The Elantra Hybrid's MSRP ranges from $24,550 to $29,150, so the 2024 version will likely cost over $30k for more expensive models.

The Elantra's main rivals will come as no surprise to anyone, those being the Honda Civic Sedan and Toyota Corolla. The latest Civic is an incredibly complete package starting at $23,950, while the 2023 Corolla begins at $21,700.

New Hyundai Elantra Exterior And Colors

用一个新的Shark-nose前筋膜和改变rear with an H Motif and full-width taillight layout, the exterior of the Hyundai Elantra is unique in this traditionally conservative segment. There are more unusual creases and details around its body than on the Honda Civic Sedan, for example. Look closely, and you can spot C-pillar trim with a Parametric Dynamics design theme.

Other changes for this 2024 facelift include slimmer LED daytime running lights linked by a metallic bar, a new two-piece grille with a center element in the same color as the body, new front fenders, and a rear diffuser with a U-shaped element in silver. The alloy wheel designs are fresh and range from small 15-inch items on the base model to a set of 18s on upper trims.

There have also been changes to the available colors you can order for the 2024 Hyundai Elantra. New shades are Ecotronic Gray, Ultimate Red, Exotic Green, and Amazon Gray. Exotic Green is limited to the N-Line, but the rest are broadly available across the range.

Hyundai Elantra Dimensions

Since this is a facelift and not an all-new model, we don't expect the dimensions of the Hyundai Elantra to have changed much, if at all. The 2023 model has a length of 184.1 inches, a width of 71.9 inches, a height of 55.7 inches, and a 107.1-inch wheelbase.

The curb weight, too, will probably remain between the 2,725 and 3,020 pounds of the pre-facelift version. The hybrid models will be the heaviest at up to 3,069 lbs.

Hyundai Elantra Engine And Performance

Engine choices for the new Hyundai Elantra sedan were not a high priority, with the company focusing on aesthetics, comfort, and safety instead. To that end, the base model will stick with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine making 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque. Front-wheel drive and the same intelligent variable automatic transmission complete this efficiency-focused model.

The N Line has a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-pot making 201 hp and 195 lb-ft. Based on independent tests, the 0-60 mph time of under seven seconds makes this a much more enjoyable drive than the base Elantra. The same goes for the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission of this model. TheElantra Hybridmodels have a 1.6-liter engine and electric motor combining for 139 hp, and they use a six-speed EcoShift dual-clutch automatic.

If that's not enough performance for you, you can opt for the Elantra N with its 2.0-liter turbocharged four-pot and 276 hp and 289 lb-ft.

All Elantra models have front-wheel drive, so it still lacks the all-wheel-drive option of rivals like the Mazda 3. Although the sporty N model which we review separately has had a few suspension and steering enhancements for the 2024 model year, the normal Elantra has not.

Gas Mileage

With unchanged powertrains, we expect the same gas mileage figures for the 2024 Elantra. According to the EPA's 2023 ratings, the Elantra Hybrid with its lithium-ion battery can attain best figures of 53/56/54 mpg city/highway/combined. For the base gas models with the 2.0-liter engine, expect 33/42/37 mpg, while the N-Line with its turbocharged 1.6L engine will manage 28/36/31 mpg. Overall, the Elantra's gas mileage specs point to a highly efficient sedan.

Hybrids have an 11-gallon gas tank, so will manage a range of up to 594 miles, while gas-only models have a range of between 384 and 458 miles from a larger 12.4-gallon tank, depending on the engine.

Hyundai Elantra Interior And Cargo

The Hyundai Elantra's interior receives several improvements for this facelifted model. In terms of materials, there are new soft-touch front door panels, new colors, and new H-Tex leather seating surfaces for the upper Limited trims. The seats inside cheaper Hyundai Elantra models are likely to retain cloth upholstery.

Hyundai has also added new technologies or improved existing ones. There is a new 4.2-inch instrument cluster design, while a 10.25-inch infotainment system is standard on SEL trims and above. Previously, this was an option on the SEL. A redesigned wireless charging pad is fitted, while three USB-C ports - one in front and two at the back - are added.

Elsewhere, the standard sound system has six speakers (up from four previously), while Limited and N-Line models now have an eight-speaker Bose sound system. Other technology enhancements include a Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluelink+ Connected Car technology, and the new Digital Key 2 that's compatible with both Apple and Android devices.

The Elantra was already well-stocked with safety gear, but now it's even better in this regard. For second-row passengers, side airbags are now standard, as is a rear seat belt reminder. The steering wheel with haptic feedback is standard across all trims and incorporates controls for lane-keeping assist, blind-spot collision warning, and rear cross-traffic collision-avoidance assist. On the Limited, standard items are a surround-view monitor, a blind-spot view monitor, and park distance warning (forward and reverse).

We don't foresee any changes to the available cargo space in the Hyundai Elantra. That means you get 14.2 cubic feet of space in the trunk, nearly matching the Civic and edging the Corolla.
