2020 Ford Expedition Gets Tougher With New FX4 Package

Chevrolet recently announced the next-generationTahoeandSuburbanfull-size SUVs, which will be available with an off-road Z71 trim level. Not to be outdone by General Motors, Ford has announced an off-road package for its full-size SUVs, theExpeditionandExpedition Max. It's called the FX4 off-road package, and it will be available on the upscale Expedition and Expedition Max with the Limited trim level.

The FX4 package adds off-road-tuned shocks, an electronic limited-slip rear differential, skid plates, side steps, and FX4 badging. "There's a growing trend in people looking to enjoy rugged terrain without having to give up the refinement, comfort or convenience of getting there," said Devin McParlane, Ford Expedition consumer marketing manager.

FX4 Expeditions will also come equipped with 18-inch metallic gray-painted cast-aluminum rims wrapped in 32-inch all-terrain tires. Ford has built the Expedition to stand up to off-road abuse with seven underbody skid plates, a new sand shield to protect the turbocharger intercoolers, steel plates to protect the steering gear, engine, transmission, and transfer case, and a full-length fuel tank guard. The chin spoiler has also been shortened to improve approach angles and a 360-degree camera system is included in the package to help drivers avoid obstacles.

Ford says the 2020 Expedition Limited FX4 package is available for both the standard Expedition and extended-length Expedition MAX at dealerships now. The package is priced at$2,035, which seems fair for the off-road kit and the 360-degree camera.
