This Expedition Is The Closest Ford Will Go To A Raptor SUV

Is the Expedition now relevant again?

Ford has never officially offered an SUV version of the Raptor. This hasn't stopped tuning companies like Hennessey from turning the Raptorinto a monster SUVusing the rear door configuration fromthe old Excursion. The full-size SUV market has been dying down as crossovers have become more popular with families. This hasn't stopped Ford from updating the new Expedition with some upgrades that actually make it cool. For starters, the 2018 Expedition will get an FX4 off-roading package that toughens up this otherwise boring SUV.

The Expedition only comes with one engine option, a 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 in two states of tune. For 2018, this engine now makes 10 hp and 50 lb-ft of torque more than the outgoing model. The Expedition now makes the same 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque as the F-150. The Platinum makes a little more power with 400 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque, but requires premium fuel. Unfortunately the FX4 is only available with the less powerful tune, but there are plenty of other improvements to help the SUV go off-road. For starters, the FX4 has an electronic limited-slip differential in the rear that can shift power from left to right according to which wheel has traction.

The FX4 has all-terrain tires and stiffer shocks that sit on unique 18-inch wheels. The SUV also benefits from several skid plates and a "sand shield" to protect important parts under the body such as the intercoolers. Visually, the FX4 is differentiated by some unique badges and running boards across the sides. The interior even has rubber floor liners to help keep dirt from ruining the carpet. Pricing has not been revealed for the 2018 FX4, but the SUV will be available starting this fall. We would love to see a full-on Expedition Raptor, but the FX4 seems like the closest we might ever get.
