2020 Ford F-150

2020 Ford F-150 Review: The Firm Favorite

Undeniably America's favorite truck, the Ford F-150 is the epitome of versatility and substance. It's so good that we've even crowned it as one of the ten most influential vehicles of the last decade, with its shift to an aluminum chassis really advancing the segment. With six trims and six different engine configurations shared among the models, the new F-150 can be a basic workhorse, a capable off-roader, and even a luxury cruiser. Options range from a 290 horsepower 3.3-liter V6 with 265 lb-ft of torque, to a 2.7-liter turbocharged V6 with 325 hp and 400 lb-ft, with the biggest engine being a 5.0-liter V8 that produces 395 hp and 400 lb-ft. The most powerful engine, however, is a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 with 450 hp and 510 lb-ft, while a 3.0-liter Power Stroke V6 turbodiesel is also available, with 250 hp and 440 lb-ft.

2020 Ford F-150 Changes:What’s the difference vs 2019 F-150?

2019 saw a major refresh, so the 2020 Ford F-150 has only received a nip here and a tuck there. Three new colors have been added to the palette with three older shades falling away, while the base XL is now available with an STX Sport appearance package to dress up its workaday looks. Lariat models and up are now treated to Ford Co-Pilot 360 driver aids as standard, with Platinum and Limited models also earning adaptive cruise control.

F-150 Exterior

Multiple looks are available for the F-150, yet each of them retains the C-shape headlights and the large front grille that we've become accustomed to. The base model is fitted with black plastic bumpers and mirrors, with the XLT earning fog lights, chrome bumpers and 17-inch alloy wheels instead of the standard steel items. The Lariat gets 18s and color-coded mirrors while the King ranch gets LED fogs, quad-beam LED headlights, and a unique grille. Platinum models get chrome mirrors and 20-inch polished wheels, while the top trim earns 22s, a dual-pane sunroof, and a dual-exit exhaust.

F-150 Performance

当你想让你的标题as the preferred truck for the car market in the USA, you need to offer variety. Ford's F-150 pickup truck does just that, with six engine options. A 3.3-liter V6 with 290 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque is the entry-level option, but the one that makes the most power is a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged "High Output" EcoBoost V6. This power plant generates 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque and is the same mill that is found in the racy Raptor (reviewed separately). Paired with an excellent ten-speed automatic, this motor is only available in the top-trim Limited model, and is capable of towing 11,100 lbs in 4x2 guise, and 9,300 lbs in 4x4 guise. The lower output 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 produces less (375 hp and 470 lb-ft) but since it is available in a lighter trim level, it can tow more: a class-leading 13,200 lbs. For the highest payload, however, you'll want the 5.0-liter V8 that produces 395 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. Paired with a 4x2 drivetrain and a medium wheelbase of 141.1 inches, the Ford F-150's towing capacity is rated at 3,270 lbs.

Engine and Transmission

f - 150可选择的六个引擎s. The base model comes standard with a 3.3-liter V6 that produces 290 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. It is the only engine in the range fitted with a six-speed automatic gearbox, you can have either rear-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive. Other options you can spec include a 2.7-liter V6 EcoBoost (standard on the Lariat) that produces 325 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque, or the only V8 in the range, a 5.0-liter motor with 395 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque, which is standard on the King Ranch. The Lariat and higher trims also have access to a 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost that develops 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque, as well as a 3.0-liter Power Stroke turbodiesel V6 with 250 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque. The top-spec luxury Limited trim is the only model in the range with access to a higher-output version of the 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 EcoBoost, an engine it shares with the Raptor. Output here is an impressive 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. The best part of all these engine options, with the exception of the base model, is the ten-speed SelectShift gearbox that provides seamless and perfectly-timed shifts, regardless of what you require from the driving experience. With normal, towing, and sport modes to choose from, the top-spec 450-hp engine makes the most of overtaking opportunities and, combined with the body's aluminum construction, this motor is the one you want for surprising performance on the road. However, since it's only available in the most expensive trim, we'd rather opt for the regular output 3.5 V6, offering a good balance between towing capacity and performance.

Handling and Driving Impressions

如同大多数body-on-frame卡车,礼貌的基于“增大化现实”技术e less than perfect. However, rivals like theRAM 1500提供空气悬架提供了可能st comfort in the class. That said, the F-150 is still comfortable over small bumps and undulations, the suspension does a decent job of ironing out imperfections. Over bigger bumps and uneven, pockmarked tarmac, the rear end can skitter about when the bed is unladen, but that is typical of pick-up trucks in general. Naturally, depending on the trim you specify, these characteristics will vary considerably. Wheel sizes that range from 17 to 22 inches play a big role, with the biggest size obviously transmitting more road imperfections to the occupants of the cabin. However, the equipment levels of the higher trims naturally add considerable weight to the F-150, which can help it feel more planted and less prone to floaty handling. Steering is impressively weighted, with not too much lightness or heft so as to make driving unnerving or unpleasant. Likewise, the brakes are decent, although the base XL model is typically quicker to stop than the heavier Limited model, for example. Although not as bad as some other vehicles can be in this department, the F-150 requires considerable force on the pedal for the brakes to get the picture that you want to stop. When it finally does get the message, stopping distances are acceptable. When it comes to off-roading, the 4x4 option is an obvious choice, and it can be had across the range. For ultimate ability though, you'll want the standaloneRaptormodel with its extreme wheel articulation and sturdy bash guards.

F-150 Gas Mileage

f - 150 mpg数据范围不同,weight and powertrain choices once again affecting the results. The worst-performing model here is the 4x4 Limited model's High Output 3.5-liter V6 twin-turbo, returning 16/22/18 miles per gallon on the city/highway/combined cycles according to the EPA. The diesel option is predictably the most frugal, particularly in 4x2 guise, with Ford claiming gas mileage of 22/30/25 mpg on the same cycles; opting for 4x4 worsens the figures slightly to 20/25/22mpg. Three tank sizes are available, with Regular and SuperCab models coming standard with a 23-gallon gas tank. The SuperCrew gets a larger 26-gallon gas tank, while all models (with the exception of those fitted with the diesel engine) can be specced with a long-range 36-gallon tank. All models are, fortunately, equipped with stop/start as standard, helping save fuel. Gas mileage for the Ford F-150 is the best with the most economical powertrain and its biggest available tank and offers an impressive range of 650 miles.

F-150 Interior

The F-150's interior is as boxy as its body, but it's well laid out and easy to use. Base models utilize durable, hard plastics and a basic infotainment setup, while higher trims get treated to larger screens and, in the Limited model, even heated and ventilated front seats with a twin-panel sunroof. The idea here is that, regardless of the application or the purpose of your pick-up purchase, there's an F-150 to suit you. Whether you need a utilitarian workhorse with an interior that can be abused or if you want comfort and an impressive level of luxury, the F-150 has something that should cater to your needs.

Seating and Interior Space

Depending on the chosen body style, the F-150 is a pickup truck that can seat up to six individuals, with the most cavernous being those with the SuperCrew Cab body. The Regular body seats three, even without rear doors on a three-across stock-fitted bench. SuperCab and SuperCrew configurations add a three-seater bench in the rear, while allowing for the front seat to be optioned out in favor of a 40/console/40 two-seater version. This allows for a total of five to be seated, although both benches can be kept in for space for six.

No matter which version you opt for, grab handles at each door makes climbing into the cabin relatively easy, and Lariat models and up also add running boards as standard, thus easing entry and exit. Once seated, you'll find comfortable perches that are adequately spaced, and even if one six-footer sits behind another, there is enough headroom and legroom for both of them to be relatively comfortable. Front passengers will find the Limited to be the most luxurious, its leather seats being contoured buckets.

Interior Colors and Materials

The base model features a wealth of black and gray plastics, with Medium Earth Gray as the color of choice for the upholstery, which can be had in either vinyl or fabric. The XLT dispenses with vinyl and adds Medium Light Camel as a color option. The Lariat gets both colors, but applies them to leather and adds black as an option, with a leather steering wheel and some aluminum accents around the air-conditioning vents. The King Ranch gets wood and contrasting stitching, and is only available with a two-tone scheme of Kingsville and Java. The Ford F-150 Platinum model offers unique leather in either black or Dark Marsala with genuine wood accents, while the Limited trim features a Camelback two-tone color scheme and unique wood trim.

F-150 Trunk and Cargo Space

The F-150 pickup's cargo capacity will vary depending on the bed size you opt for, with the 5.5-foot bed offering a volume of 52.8 cubic feet. Its length measures 67.1 inches, while height and width between the wheelhouses are the same across the bed options, at 21.4 and 50.6 inches respectively. The mid-size 6.5-foot bed provides 62.3 cubic feet from a length of 78.9 inches, and the biggest, eight-foot bed is 97.6 inches long, with 77.4 cubic feet of volume.

In the cabin, the doors are cavernous and make allowance for water bottles, while the center console has a pair of cupholders and a large storage bin beneath the center armrest. A large glove box adds more volume, while rear passengers also benefit from central storage and cupholders. SuperCab and SuperCrew bodies get an overhead console on upper trims, too.

F-150 Infotainment and Features

Features

As standard, the Ford F-150 pickup is well-equipped, with stop-start, a rearview camera with trailer hitch assist, cruise control, single-zone climate control, trailer sway control, auto high beams and automatic emergency braking. Further up the range, you can get access to auto headlights, heated power mirrors, keyless entry, ambient lighting, power-adjustable pedals, dual-zone climate control, lane-keep assist and blind-spot monitoring with trailer coverage. Also available are features like remote start, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel. The Ford F-150 Platinum trim earns push-button start, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, auto wipers, and rear park sensors, while the top trim gets a twin-panel sunroof and a 360-degree surround-view camera.

Infotainment

The base XL is sans any stock-fitted infotainment systems, with even Ford's SYNC setup having to be optioned on, although there is FordPass Connect with Wi-Fi capabilities and a standard AM/FM stereo. The XLT, mercifully, comes with SYNC 3 featuring an eight-inch capacitive screen, which carries over to the upper trims, and includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. On the King Ranch and up, SiriusXM satellite radio is added too, along with voice-activated navigation and even a Bang & Olufsen sound system comprising a 750-watt amplifier and ten upgraded speakers. While this seems like a good setup on paper, and the clean graphics and easy-to-navigate menus are a joy, our grip with the touchscreen's response time remains - something that modern vehicles, and particularly those with luxury aspirations like the Limited trim, ought to have fixed.

F-150 Problems and Reliability

The 2020 F-150 has been subject to three recalls thus far, with an August 2019 recall pertaining to reduced seat back strength, while November saw another for excessive sealant adhesive on a battery cable. The final recall issued thus far was in December of 2019, for a damaged spare tire that could lose air pressure or detach.

A three-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty covers the F-150 against manufacturing defaults, while the powertrain is covered for five years/60,000 miles. Due to extensive use of aluminum, a warranty is applied to the body panels, as well as the paint's adhesion properties, with coverage valid for five years. Roadside assistance is valid for five years or 60,000 miles, while the optional diesel engine is covered for six years or 100,000 miles.

F-150 Safety

The NHTSA has awarded the SuperCrew Cab version of the F-150 its best possible score of five stars in crash reviews performed by the agency. The Regular Cab only scored four stars. At the NHTSA, the SuperCab and SuperCrew scored the best possible score of Good in all tests, with the exception of headlights where both scored poorly.

Key Safety Features

As standard, the F-150 features a rearview camera with trailer hitch assist and trailer sway control. It also gets automatic emergency airbags and six airbags: front, side, and curtain airbags. Further up in the range, Ford's Co-Pilot 360 suite is standard from the Lariat model up and adds auto high beams, blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, trailer tow monitoring, and lane-keep assist. The top two trims also have access to adaptive cruise control, while other options include a surround-view camera and inflatable seatbelts.

Verdict:Is the 2020 Ford F-150 a good car?

The F-150 is not as luxurious in its top trim as it should be, with some rivals offering better ride comfort and a more solid interior. The base model is also cursed with a wheezy engine and a gearbox that isn't the best on offer. The best available infotainment system is also behind the times with its responses, which can become frustrating. However, in between these two extreme model variants, value can be found, and the available best in class towing ability is enviable. The turbodiesel Power Stroke V6 offers an impressive balance between efficiency and towing ability, while the available 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 offers more power than you are likely to need. Combined with decent room, a comfortable cabin, an impressive list of standard features, as well as numerous available safety options, the F-150's costs are on par with rivals and it is as good as it needs to be.

What's the Price of the 2020 Ford F-150?

f - 150的多个配置出售,with the cheapest variant, an XL Regular Cab with a 6.5-foot bed, starting at $28,495. Adding an eight-foot bed brings the total to $28,795. The Power Stroke turbodiesel V6 available from this model adds $4,000 to the bill. The King Ranch special edition comes standard with the V8 and can only be had in SuperCrew configuration, much like its more expensive brethren. 2020 Ford F-150 Models

The F-150 is available in six trims with varying specs: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum and Limited.

The XL comes standard with a 3.3-liter V6 producing 290 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. This is mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox. Distinguishing features include black bumpers, mirrors, and front grille, while other features include 17-inch steel wheels, single-zone climate control, a basic AM/FM stereo with no standard infotainment systems, auto high beams, automatic emergency braking, and either vinyl or cloth upholstery.

The XLT is similar but adds alloy wheels, chrome bumpers, auto headlights, power-adjustable glass in the wing mirrors, and keyless entry, as well as an eight-inch touchscreen and SYNC 3 infotainment. Both it and the XLT can be had in any available configuration of bed and body.

The Lariat is not available with a regular cab and features a 2.7-liter turbocharged V6 EcoBoost as standard, producing 325 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. Its drivetrain features a ten-speed automatic transmission, and it can be told apart by its 18-inch wheels and two-bar front grille. It also earns body-colored mirrors with heated glass, dual-zone climate control, leather upholstery, ambient lighting, power-adjustable pedals, and blind-spot monitoring with trailer coverage. Also included are lane-keep assist and the rest of the Co-Pilot 360 safety suite.

The King Ranch is a special edition with unique leather and badging. Only available as a SuperCrew Cab, it is fitted with a 395-hp 5.0-liter V8. It earns LED foglamps, quad-beam LED headlights, a Bang & Olufsen sound system, SiriusXM satellite radio, navigation, and remote start. It is only available as a SuperCrew Cab and only has one engine option.

All models come with rear-wheel-drive as standard and have access to all-wheel-drive as an option.

Additional Packages

A trailer-tow package is available from the XL model for $595, adding the necessary wiring, an oil cooler, and a Class IV trailer hitch receiver. If you want a basic model but want to increase comfort slightly, the XLT can be had with the 301A Mid package for $2,100, adding a power-adjustable driver's seat, power-adjustable pedals, and a leather steering wheel. On the Lariat, a chrome appearance package falls under 502A Luxury, and also adds an upgraded Bang & Olufsen sound system and rear park sensors for $6,765. A black-out appearance package is also available, deleting all chrome and tinting the lights for $1,195.

What New Ford F-150 Model Should I Buy?

Our best value-for-money specification is the Lariat. Featuring Ford's Co-Pilot 360 suite of driver aids as standard, as well as a leather interior and an upgraded infotainment system with an eight-inch touchscreen, this model balances comfort and capability. The fact that it can't be had with the base engine is a bonus, but the choice of which powertrain to choose will rest on your intended purpose for the vehicle. If you aim to maximize the F-150's towing ability, the optional 3.5-liter EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 with 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque is the one to opt for. With either a SuperCrew Cab or SuperCab as your options on this trim, you can have both a practical truck and a usable commuter vehicle.

2020 Ford F-150 vs Ram 1500

With a base price of $27,945, the RAM 1500 is marginally cheaper than a Ford F-150 XL that starts at $28,495. It's most expensive trim is vastly more affordable too, starting at under $57,000 - more than ten grand cheaper than the F-150 Limited. With an available air suspension setup, the 1500 can be more comfortable too. When it comes to utility, however, the Ford can be configured to tow over 13,000 pounds, while the RAM is marginally worse off, with a max towing rating of 12,750 pounds. In terms of safety, the 1500's available LED headlights and other equipment have allowed it to earn the IIHS' Top Safety Pick+ award. Overall, the RAM appears to be a better buy in terms of safety and passenger comfort, and financially it's a more economically prudent choice too. However, the Ford is more capable, and its fans will still flock to dealers to buy the 2020 model.

2020 Ford F-150 vs Chevrolet Silverado 1500

The Silverado's pricing is similar to that of the Ford F-150, with the base models of each brand separated by only $195. The Chevy is not vastly different in 2019 to its 2020 version, but again, the Ford still falls short in terms of passenger comfort, with the Silverado boasting features like active noise cancellation. With a maximum towing capacity of 13,400 pounds, the Silverado 1500 is a titan of pulling power. It also offers features like cameras that allow you to keep an eye on what you're pulling. However, in terms of safety, the big Chevy lags behind, with the IIHS' tricky passenger front small overlap test leading to a Marginal rating in that area. The Chevy pulls a point back with slightly better cargo capacity thanks to clever packaging, thus almost bringing us to the conclusion that things are balanced between the two. However, the Ford's engine options - with the exception of its base 3.3-liter motor - are more refined. Overall, personal requirements will dictate which one to choose, but the Ford edges it for us.
