It's so good that we've even crowned it as one of the ten most influential vehicles of the last decade, with its shift to an aluminum chassis really advancing the segment. With six trims and six different engine configurations shared among the models, the new F-150 can be a basic workhorse, a capable off-roader, and even a luxury cruiser. Options range from a 290 horsepower 3.3-liter V6 with 265 lb-ft of torque, to a 2.7-liter turbocharged V6 with 325 hp and 400 lb-ft, with the biggest engine being a 5.0-liter V8 that produces 395 hp and 400 lb-ft. The most powerful engine, however, is a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 with 450 hp and 510 lb-ft, while a 3.0-liter Power Stroke V6 turbodiesel is also available, with 250 hp and 440 lb-ft.

Multiple looks are available for the F-150, yet each of them retains the C-shape headlights and the large front grille that we've become accustomed to. The base model is fitted with black plastic bumpers and mirrors, with the XLT earning fog lights, chrome bumpers and 17-inch alloy wheels instead of the standard steel items. The Lariat gets 18s and color-coded mirrors while the King ranch gets LED fogs, quad-beam LED headlights, and a unique grille. Platinum models get chrome mirrors and 20-inch polished wheels, while the top trim earns 22s, a dual-pane sunroof, and a dual-exit exhaust.

The F-150 is available with three different bed sizes, with a 5.5-foot bed, a 6.5-foot bed, and an eight-foot bed. Overall length ranges from 209.3 inches to a maximum of 250.5 inches. Wheelbase typically varies also, with the shortest applying to the medium-length bed with a regular cab measuring 122.4 inches from hub to hub. Ground clearance varies depending on wheelbase and drivetrain, with the best-performing 4x4 managing 9.4 inches. The best approach angle is 26.1 degrees, with the highest departure angle measuring 27.1 inches. The maximum breakover angle is 24.7 degrees.

Three colors have been scrapped for 2019, with Ingot Silver Metallic, Ruby Red Tinted Clearcoat and White Platinum Metallic Tri-Coat not making the cut. In their place are Iconic Silver, Rapid Red Metallic Tinted Clearcoat and Star White Metallic Tri-Coat. The base XL is available in 11 different colors: Agate Black, Lead Foot, Abyss Gray, Velocity Blue, Iconic Silver, Oxford White, Race Red, Blue Jeans, Magnetic, Magma Red and Stone Gray. Further up in the range is Silver Spruce, with the XLT having access to the $395 Rapid Red too. Whether you need a utilitarian workhorse with an interior that can be abused or if you want comfort and an impressive level of luxury, the F-150 has something that should cater to your needs.

Depending on the chosen body style, the F-150 is a pickup truck that can seat up to six individuals, with the most cavernous being those with the SuperCrew Cab body. The Regular body seats three, even without rear doors on a three-across stock-fitted bench. SuperCab and SuperCrew configurations add a three-seater bench in the rear, while allowing for the front seat to be optioned out in favor of a 40/console/40 two-seater version. This allows for a total of five to be seated, although both benches can be kept in for space for six.

No matter which version you opt for, grab handles at each door makes climbing into the cabin relatively easy, and Lariat models and up also add running boards as standard, thus easing entry and exit. Once seated, you'll find comfortable perches that are adequately spaced, and even if one six-footer sits behind another, there is enough headroom and legroom for both of them to be relatively comfortable. Front passengers will find the Limited to be the most luxurious, its leather seats being contoured buckets.

The base model features a wealth of black and gray plastics, with Medium Earth Gray as the color of choice for the upholstery, which can be had in either vinyl or fabric. The XLT dispenses with vinyl and adds Medium Light Camel as a color option. The F-150 pickup's cargo capacity will vary depending on the bed size you opt for, with the 5.5-foot bed offering a volume of 52.8 cubic feet. Its length measures 67.1 inches, while height and width between the wheelhouses are the same across the bed options, at 21.4 and 50.6 inches respectively. The mid-size 6.5-foot bed provides 62.3 cubic feet from a length of 78.9 inches, and the biggest, eight-foot bed is 97.6 inches long, with 77.4 cubic feet of volume.

In the cabin, the doors are cavernous and make allowance for water bottles, while the center console has a pair of cupholders and a large storage bin beneath the center armrest. A large glove box adds more volume, while rear passengers also benefit from central storage and cupholders. SuperCab and SuperCrew bodies get an overhead console on upper trims, too.

As standard, the Ford F-150 pickup is well-equipped, with stop-start, a rearview camera with trailer hitch assist, cruise control, single-zone climate control, trailer sway control, auto high beams and automatic emergency braking. Further up the range, you can get access to auto headlights, heated power mirrors, keyless entry, ambient lighting, power-adjustable pedals, dual-zone climate control, lane-keep assist and blind-spot monitoring with trailer coverage. Also available are features like remote start, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel. The Ford F-150 Platinum trim earns push-button start, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, auto wipers, and rear park sensors, while the top trim gets a twin-panel sunroof and a 360-degree surround-view camera.

The base XL is sans any stock-fitted infotainment systems, with even Ford's SYNC setup having to be optioned on, although there is FordPass Connect with Wi-Fi capabilities and a standard AM/FM stereo. The XLT, mercifully, comes with SYNC 3 featuring an eight-inch capacitive screen, which carries over to the upper trims, and includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. While this seems like a good setup on paper, and the clean graphics and easy-to-navigate menus are a joy, our grip with the touchscreen's response time remains - something that modern vehicles, and particularly those with luxury aspirations like the Limited trim, ought to have fixed.

The 2020 F-150 has been subject to three recalls thus far, with an August 2019 recall pertaining to reduced seat back strength, while November saw another for excessive sealant adhesive on a battery cable. The final recall issued thus far was in December of 2019, for a damaged spare tire that could lose air pressure or detach.

A three-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty covers the F-150 against manufacturing defaults, while the powertrain is covered for five years/60,000 miles. Due to extensive use of aluminum, a warranty is applied to the body panels, as well as the paint's adhesion properties, with coverage valid for five years. Roadside assistance is valid for five years or 60,000 miles, while the optional diesel engine is covered for six years or 100,000 miles.

The NHTSA has awarded the SuperCrew Cab version of the F-150 its best possible score of five stars in crash reviews performed by the agency. The Regular Cab only scored four stars. At the NHTSA, the SuperCab and SuperCrew scored the best possible score of Good in all tests, with the exception of headlights where both scored poorly.

The base model is also cursed with a wheezy engine and a gearbox that isn't the best on offer. The best available infotainment system is also behind the times with its responses, which can become frustrating. However, in between these two extreme model variants, value can be found, and the available best in class towing ability is enviable. The turbodiesel Power Stroke V6 offers an impressive balance between efficiency and towing ability, while the available 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 offers more power than you are likely to need. Combined with decent room, a comfortable cabin, an impressive list of standard features, as well as numerous available safety options, the F-150's costs are on par with rivals and it is as good as it needs to be.

The Platinum trim starts at $55,270 with the same powertrain options and prices as the King Ranch. The most expensive model is the Limited, featuring a High Output EcoBoost V6 and a sticker price of $67,485. As a more premium model, it can't be specced with a lesser engine, but 4x4 costs $3,425 - the same price as on all the other trims, except the cheapest variant where it is $4,645. Fully loaded, an F-150 can cost over $75,000, inclusive of a $1,595 destination fee.

It is only available as a SuperCrew Cab and only has one engine option.

Our best value-for-money specification is the Lariat. Featuring Ford's Co-Pilot 360 suite of driver aids as standard, as well as a leather interior and an upgraded infotainment system with an eight-inch touchscreen, this model balances comfort and capability. The fact that it can't be had with the base engine is a bonus, but the choice of which powertrain to choose will rest on your intended purpose for the vehicle. With an available air suspension setup, the 1500 can be more comfortable too. When it comes to utility, however, the Ford can be configured to tow over 13,000 pounds, while the RAM is marginally worse off, with a max towing rating of 12,750 pounds. In terms of safety, the 1500's available LED headlights and other equipment have allowed it to earn the IIHS' Top Safety Pick+ award. Overall, the RAM appears to be a better buy in terms of safety and passenger comfort, and financially it's a more economically prudent choice too. However, the Ford is more capable, and its fans will still flock to dealers to buy the 2020 model.

The Silverado's pricing is similar to that of the Ford F-150, with the base models of each brand separated by only $195. The Chevy is not vastly different in 2019 to its 2020 version, but again, the Ford still falls short in terms of passenger comfort, with the Silverado boasting features like active noise cancellation. With a maximum towing capacity of 13,400 pounds, the Silverado 1500 is a titan of pulling power. It also offers features like cameras that allow you to keep an eye on what you're pulling. However, in terms of safety, the big Chevy lags behind, with the IIHS' tricky passenger front small overlap test leading to a Marginal rating in that area. The Chevy pulls a point back with slightly better cargo capacity thanks to clever packaging, thus almost bringing us to the conclusion that things are balanced between the two. However, the Ford's engine options - with the exception of its base 3.3-liter motor - are more refined. Overall, personal requirements will dictate which one to choose, but the Ford edges it for us.
