2023 BMW X6 Review: Oddly Compelling

Judging by the proliferation of coupe-styled crossover SUVs available, people don't seem to mind paying more for a less practical SUV, as long as it has dashing looks and decent dynamic ability. Whereas there were almost no competitors for the BMW X6 when the original E71 saw the light of day in the late 2000s, the latest version faces theAudi Q8,Porsche Cayenne Coupe, and Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, to mention only a few. The controversial rear-end styling is not to everybody's taste, but BMW made sure you can't miss it. The German marque went to the trouble to endow the X6 with better dynamic abilities than the X5, so the X6 is as much fun as an SUV can reasonably be expected to be on a windy road. The base 335-hp six-cylinder xDrive40i is such an excellent all-rounder that you hardly have to stretch for the significantly more expensive M50i, but if you do, you get X6 M-baiting performance that calls into question the M's existence - and makes some rivals look expensive. Yet, thanks to the refined engines and smooth ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic, the X6 can be as docile and relaxing in traffic as a 7 Series.

2023 BMW X6 Changes:What’s The Difference vs The 2022 X6?

新2023年宝马X6越野车进行少量的茶nges. BMW's usual SensaTec leatherette upholstery is replaced with a new Sensafin leatherette material on all trims, available in Black, Silverstone, Cognac, and Coffee. The Vernasca leather option is dropped altogether, but Merino leather remains available. A head-up display can now be ordered either as a standalone option or as part of the Premium or Executive packages on the 40i trims. The Premium package gains wireless device charging, while both the Premium and Executive packages lose their gesture controls. Last of all, Arctic Grey disappears from the paint palette. The 2023 X6 goes on sale in the USA at a base price of $70,100.

2023 BMW X6 Handling and Driving Impressions

The 2023 X6 xDrive40i makes the most of its 335-hp/331-lb-ft turbocharged inline-six to provide scintillating performance. Its 5.3-second sprint to 60 mph is more than fast enough for most people and makes it the pick of the bunch. Its handling dynamics are truly impressive, and though it doesn't handle like a sports car, every BMW X6 review so far has remarked on how agile and pointy it feels for such a large and heavy SUV. Importantly, the ride remains absorbent enough for it to double as passenger transport - an important SUV remit. The M50i is considerably more hardcore, with its twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8's 523 hp and 553 lb-ft slingshotting it to 60 mph in a fraction over four seconds. If you must have a very rapid X6, take this over the X6 M, because despite a busier ride, the M50i still manages to smooth off the sharp edges of road imperfections, unlike the far more expensive M that threatens to rearrange your spinal column. It's still plenty fast and hauls through corners flatly and with highly impressive composure, if you do that sort of thing with your SUV.

Verdict:Is The 2023 BMW X6 A Good SUV?

A coupe-styled SUV is compromised and trades practicality for swoopy styling. So, first and foremost as an SUV, we would rate the X6 behind the X5 for this reason. However, the X6 does very well among like-minded SUVs, and it is decently roomy inside, even if an Audi Q8 beats it on not only rear head- and legroom, but trunk space as well. You pay a price for that sloping roofline. Whether you like BMW's rendition of what a coupe SUV is supposed to look like is up to you, but when it comes to a driving experience befitting the dramatic looks, the tables are turned and the X6 shows the Q8 the way by providing a more dynamic drive. Despite being nearly 100 hp down and $8k cheaper than a GLE 53 Coupe, the X6 xDrive40i accelerates just as quickly as the Merc and is faster than the similarly priced Audi, while using significantly less fuel than both. It's the sweet spot in the lineup. The M50i is a big step up in price at nearly $90k, but over at Porsche, you'll pay at least $25k more for comparable performance, while the Audi S Q8 is more expensive too, making the X6 a great, high-value performance coupe SUV in this class.

What 2023 BMW X6 Model Should I Buy?

虽然lesser-powered xDrive40i is highly impressive, we're tempted to go with the thirstier M50i variant. The added performance that this model offers is simply exhilarating and makes the X6 M seem almost redundant. In addition, you get a number of features thrown in, including an M Sport body kit, adaptive M suspension, the Harman Kardon sound system, quad-zone climate control, and better front seats. The only option that we deem truly necessary is the parking assistant system, as looking out that letterbox of a rear window is a problem. Adding this option costs only $800.
