It will be one of the few all-electric wagons in the market.

It is no secret that Volkswagen is developing a station wagon version of theVW ID. 7sedan. Although the German automaker remains mum regarding the details, the all-electric model isn't safe from prying eyes whenever it goes out for a few test runs.

In an Instagram post byWilco Blok, the automotive photographer spotted what appears to be the Volkswagen ID. 7 - we think will becalled the ID.7 Tourer- with a wagon body wearing little-to-no camouflage. The rear-end footage was enough for us to believe it was part of the ID. 7 series.

Dimensions-wise, theID. Space Vizzion Concept-based station wagon will likely share the same wheelbase as the ID. 7 mid-sized electric sedan at 116.8 inches. Although, we could expect a slightly longer body to accommodate the practicality wagons are known for. For reference, the sedan measures 195.3 inches in length.

The practicality factor is one of theadvantages of all-electric wagonsover crossovers/SUVs. This body type can offer as much interior space without compromising EV range due to aerodynamic drag brought about by a tall riding height and large exterior panels. The lighter, lower-riding wagons generally get smaller wheels, shredding a few pounds that affect the range.

Volkswagen said the ID. 7 boasts animpressive drag coefficientof 0.23 and up to 434 miles of EV range. It bested the likes of theTesla Model 3and Hyundai Ioniq 6, which offer maximum ranges of 358 and 379 miles, respectively.

But considering a wagon body would add weight and revamp some of the exterior bits, the upcoming version is expected to run fewer miles on a single charge.

The electric sedan has a 77 kilowatt-hours battery and a larger 86-kWh battery. However, the automaker confirmed the smaller battery pack is the only option arriving in North America.

One challenge for Volkswagen is that wagons don't sell much in the US, hence the limited pool of wagons available. But if VW could deliver enticing advantages that would convince buyers to choose a wagon over a crossover/SUV, the ID. 7 wagon could spur the emergence of its kind.
