2020 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Review: Open-Top American Agility

The Chevrolet Camaro is a versatile open-top pony car with numerous iterations to make it attractive to all kinds of people, offering everything from a low-power tourist-friendly four-pot to a track-ready supercharged V8. With excellent handling ability and gorgeous muscular design, the Camaro Convertible is the automatic alternative to theFord Mustang. While it suffers from poor rearward visibility and a tiny trunk, the retro-modern Camaro is an affordable and fun car that starts at just $32,495. Engine options range from a basic 2.0-liter turbocharged four-pot with 275 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque to a roaring 6.2-liter V8 with 455 horses, or if you don't care for the polar bears, the 650-hpZL1(reviewed separately). All models come standard with a six-speed manual, while the four-banger has the option of an eight-speed auto and the rest of the range can be equipped with a ten-speed auto. It's a versatile range committed to the cause of the pony car, and as always, the question remains - Camaro or Mustang?

2020 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Changes:What’s The Difference vs The 2019 Camaro Convertible?

A new model is now available for 2020: the LT1. This is the cheapest V8 Camaro on sale, undercutting the 1SS model by $3,000. Other changes to the Camaro offering include a refreshed front end on the SS variants, with some subtle adjustments to the positioning of the front bowtie badge and a color-coded pair of grille bars. The 2.0-liter turbo is now the only model available with the old eight-speed auto, as the V6 model is treated to the improved ten-speed. Other changes include a new Rally Green exterior paint option.

Camaro Convertible Exterior

大黄蜂可能是一个复古的小马车,但它has numerous modern accents, including LED lighting and daytime running lights. The front of the base model houses the headlights in a black grille that causes the front end to resemble a superhero's black eye make-up, while a bulging hood adds aggression and wide hips increase width. The rear features rounded taillights in the traditional quad pattern with a dual-exit exhaust finishing off the look along with a small wing. 18-inch wheels are standard, but various designs of 20s come on higher trims. The LT1 earns a vented hood, tinted taillights and fender badges too, while SS variants get a redesigned front fascia and unique headlights. All models feature a power-folding soft-top roof, giving the Camaro Convertible its airy nature.

Dimensions

The Camaro's dimensions are not exactly diminutive, but it's not as bloated as something like aDodge Challengereither. Length measures 188.3 inches, with the body resting over a 110.7-inch wheelbase. Likethe coupe, the soft-top derivative measures 74.7 inches wide, but at 52.9 inches tall, it's 0.2 inches lower than the tin-top. Curb weight varies between 3,627 lbs and 3,937 lbs, a weight gain of around 75 pounds compared to the coupe.

Engine and Transmission

While the Camaro is strictly rear-wheel-driven, multiple engines and transmission options are available, with the base version being a 2.0-liter turbo four-pot with 275 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. This mated to a six-speed manual, as are all models in the range, but an old eight-speed auto can also be specced. While this transmission is not entirely offensive, the smoothness and quickness of the ten-speed available on all other models really contrast with this dated auto. The base engine similarly is not inherently bad and does a respectable job of accelerating, with a respectable 0-60 mph time of around five to five and a half seconds. However, the available 3.6-liter V6 that produces 335 hp and 284 lb-ft is far more entertaining and does a better job of motivating you, with Chevy claiming a slightly quicker five seconds flat for the coupe, with the convertible slightly slower. The LT1, with its 455 horses and matching number of torques, can manage the sprint as quickly as four seconds, matched on the SS trims. The V8's the one you really want though - it stays truest to Camaro heritage and implores you to wind out the engine until redline, making piloting the manual-equipped models a particular joy.

Handling and Driving Impressions

Where rivals like the Ford Mustang offer a balance between a refined ride and decent handling ability, no pony car comes close to the Camaro for outright deftness of feel and intuitive steering. Naturally, the coupe would be even better drive, but if you're going to compromise on structural rigidity by having a drop-top, the Camaro is certainly the most fun way to do it. The balance and poise of this car is brilliant, and although the heavier V8s are a little more prone to understeer, their phenomenal throttle response allows you to use the loud pedal to rotate them with ease. In it latest iteration, the Camaro is a joy to drive, and its brakes are great. V8 models get upgraded four-pot Brembos in front, not quite the six-piston items of the ZL1, but good enough for most road and occasional track use. With variable drive modes that include a Track mode, the steering weights up more and more, allowing you to add finesse to each cornering maneuver. Magnetic dampers are also available for further duality of purpose, allowing you to experience either comfort or firm body-roll reduction, depending on what kind of driving you're doing.

Camaro Convertible Gas Mileage

最有效的大黄蜂是涡轮增压4-pot with the auto 'box, as expected. This variant returns 22/31/25 mpg on the city/highway/combined cycles, with its 19-gallon gas tank making a mixed range of 475 miles possible. The rest of the range returns combined figures of between 19 and 23 mpg on the mixed cycles, depending on the transmission and engine, with the thirstiest being the manual V8s, consuming 16/24/19 mpg.

年代eating and Interior Space

While the Camaro range as a whole represents affordable performance, the interior shows us how they were able to make the car affordable. The seats are generally comfortable in front but are surrounded by cheap materials. The back seats, of which there are two, are tiny and wouldn't be suitable for any occupants other than toddlers. Visibility all-round is also bordering on pathetic, making the optional blind-spot monitoring system a must-have if you intend to keep the top up. At least eight-way driver and six-way passenger power-adjustability are standard, while optional Recaros hug you a little tighter through the bends.

Camaro Convertible Trunk and Cargo Space

The Camaro's trunk is never in danger of being described in terms such as capacious or expansive. Volume is limited to just 7.3 cubic feet, which is dismal when you consider that the more compact-looking Mustang convertible has 11.4 cubes in the trunk. Fold the top down on the Camaro and there's a useful spot for you to clip a partition so that your luggage doesn't get damaged, but this also shows you that the roof takes up more than half of the overall trunk space, leaving you barely enough space for a gym bag or two. With a narrow trunk opening, it's best to forget about bringing anything along for drives unless you're willing to dump items on the back seats.

In the cabin, a pair of cupholders is included in front while the rear gets a small storage tray only. The doors don't offer much space for your phone or wallet either, and the center console allows for nothing. The center armrest does open up, but space is severely limited there too, and the glovebox is tiny.

Camaro Convertible Infotainment and Features

Features

The Camaro gets keyless entry and a rearview camera as standard, with automatic models earning remote start too. Single-zone climate control and LED headlights are also included on the base model. Further up in the range, heated and ventilated front seats are available, as is a rearview mirror with a camera display. 24-color ambient lighting can also be had, along with dual-zone climate control, a heated steering wheel, a head-up display, and a variable drive-mode selector. Adaptive suspension and launch control can also be optioned on. Driver assistance features include available rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure warning. Forward-collision warning, available on the coupe variant, is not available here, but all models get the Teen Driver function to limit some vehicle capabilities and keep safety systems activated.

Infotainment

The Camaro Convertible's standard infotainment system includes a seven-inch touchscreen display and is well-specced for a base unit. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port, and even a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot are standard. The system sends output to six speakers in the standard setup, but a Bose seven-speaker upgrade is available, as is an enhanced eight-inch touch display with navigation on upper trims. While the rest of the interior is average, the Chevy Infotainment 3 system is brilliant, helping make the interior a better place to sit.

Camaro Convertible Problems and Reliability

The 2020 Chevrolet Camaro has thus far been subject to one recall for a fuel pump that was missing a pressure regulator. In terms of warranty, a limited bumper-to-bumper warranty covers the Camaro for the first three years or 36,000 miles while a powertrain warranty provides peace of mind for five years or 60,000 miles. One complimentary scheduled maintenance visit is included in the first year.

大黄蜂敞篷车安全

Convertible versions of the 2020 Camaro have thus far not been fully tested by the NHTSA, but the coupe scored a full five stars in their crash tests and the convertible was rated five stars for rollover safety. Similarly, the IIHS has also not conducted crash tests on the convertible, but the coupe variant scored Good in three of five crashworthiness evaluations - losing out in roof strength - an area where the Convertible will likely fare worse.

年代tandard safety features for the Camaro convertible include a rearview camera and six airbags (dual front, front side, and front knee). Also included is a teen driver function and a tire pressure monitoring system. Optionally available features, which become standard on higher trims, include rear parking sensors, a rearview mirror camera display, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure warning. Forward-collision alert is not available on convertible models.

Verdict:Is The 2020 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible A Good car?

The Camaro is getting a little long in the tooth, and its interior finishings and quality of materials are questionable. It also has almost useless rear seats, but that's common for the segment. What isn't common is the absurdly small trunk and its opening, and if you want to drive with the top down, the available storage space is even further compromised in a dramatic way. Nevertheless, the handling of the Camaro is amazing and the infotainment system works in an almost perfect fashion. We'd avoid the base model with its four-cylinder engine, as it's quick but in no way hair-raising or characterful, plus the auto gearbox is out of date. However, all other versions are very cool in their own way. While others may be more advanced, especially when it comes to safety equipment, the Camaro is almost unrivaled in the way it drives. For that, we'd highly recommend a test drive, if not a spot in your garage.

What's the Price of the 2020 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible?

The Camaro starts at a base price of $31,500 before the $995 destination charge with an automatic transmission adding $1,495. Opting for the V6 in the base trim will set you back at least $33,095 before fees and taxes. The 2LT model starts at $33,500 while the 3LT is $4,000 more. The LT1, the cheapest V8 model, starts at $40,000 on the dot, while the 1SS is $43,000. The 2SS is five grand dearer.

What Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Model Should I Buy?

While all Camaros handle very well, we feel that a car that is too impractical for anything other than pleasure, and especially a pony car, should have a V8. For this reason, we'd opt for the 2SS. In addition to having a V8, it also earns 20-inch wheels, black styling accents, upgraded suspension, Brembo brakes, variable drive modes, and a vented hood. You also get niceties like heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a head-up display, dual-zone climate control, and an upgraded Bose sound system. Although the manual is the version of choice for spirited driving, the auto is very good and, in a convertible, you want to be able to indulge in carefree cruising. Helping facilitate that are more standard safety features like blind-spot monitoring, a must-have in the Camaro, and rear parking sensors. The front fascia is also more aggressive, adding to the car's appeal. For just over $50,000, you have a great cruiser with plenty of power and numerous convenience features.

2020 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible vs Ford Mustang Convertible

With similar recipes and similar base prices of around $32,000, the Camaro and Mustang are eternal rivals. In base form, the Mustang has the edge in terms of performance, with its 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-pot turbo mill developing 310 horse and 350 lb-ft of twist versus the Camaro's 275 hp and 295 lb-ft. In addition, the base Mustang convertible is available with Ford's excellent ten-speed SelectShift automatic, giving it the edge over a base Camaro with an auto. The Mustang is also more practical and has a much bigger trunk and better interior storage options than the Camaro. While the Camaro bests it in terms of fuel consumption by two mpg on the combined cycles, thanks to its smaller power plant, and while its handling is superior, we find that the Mustang feels better built despite its aging infotainment system, and overall is a far more usable vehicle than just a pleasure craft. For these reasons, the Ford gets our vote.

2020 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible vs Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible

Not interested in a manual gearbox? Absolutely must have a V8? The 2020 Chevrolet Corvette C8 comes in a convertible variant too, and despite having a mid-engined setup and a folding hard-top, the Corvette is surprisingly more practical than most cars in its class, with a frunk and a trunk combining for an impressive total of 12.6 cubic feet. Even without the front trunk added to the equation, the Corvette's rear storage is more capacious than the Camaro's traditional trunk, whether the top is up or down. Thanks to lightweight composites, extensive aerodynamic testing, and clever packaging - along with that 6.2-liter V8 - the Corvette is a genuine supercar too. However, its base price is not low, starting at $66,400 - more than double that of the Camaro. If you can afford it though, it's a far better driver's car.
