Volvo has done well to give the cabin of this car a personality of its own. The long, vertical ventilation outlets, portrait-style touchscreen interface, and concave inlays on the dashboard and door panels all gel together well visually. Space utilization is excellent, and even passengers at the back won't feel cramped. As standard, the XC40 comes with a clear 12-inch digital gauge, dual-zone automatic climate control, cruise control, and power-folding door mirrors. As expected, there's also a generous list of safety features like blind-spot monitoring, automatic braking, and lane-keep assist. Upper models boast classy details like an Orrefors crystal gear selector knob that makes the cabin feel even more inviting.
The XC40 is strictly a five-seat vehicle, unlike the Mercedes GLB which offers a third row. We do feel the back seat would be more comfortable with two adults rather than trying to squeeze in three people. It's not the most spacious vehicle in the sub-compact class, but it makes use of its diminutive size extremely well. These aren't our favorite front seats in Volvo's lineup, but they are far more comfortable than what BMW sticks in its entry-level vehicles. The front head- and legroom are acceptable for taller occupants, while the rear space is surprisingly generous for a vehicle of this stature, with 36.1 inches of legroom and 39.1 inches of headroom. The XC40 perfectly treads the line between being too small for a budding family and encroaching into the XC60's compact territory.

沃尔沃XC40内部可能只是短暂的n Audi's in terms of build quality, but it's a pretty close comparison. An attractive blend of soft-touch plastics creates a suitably upmarket impression. Last year's XC40 came with standard leather upholstery but this year, the Core gets cloth that Volvo calls premium textile, in a City Block pattern and a color called Grey Melange, with a Charcoal interior and Urban Grid aluminum decor. Charcoal leather is a $1,100 option and is accompanied by Driftwood decor. The Plus and Ultimate get upgraded Connect suede textile/Microtech upholstery with a Charcoal interior and Cutting Edge aluminum decor. Microtech is a synthetic material that resembles leather. Real leather is available in either Charcoal with a Charcoal interior or Blond with a Blond interior, both in conjunction with Driftwood decor and an Orrefors crystal gear selector, surprisingly at no additional cost. The top two trims also get aluminum tread plates and a glossy black tunnel console.
The XC40 Recharge lineup starts with Charcoal Fusion Microtech vinyl upholstery in the Core and Plus trims. The Plus also has access to Charcoal Connect suede textile/Microtech upholstery. This is paired with a Charcoal interior by default, but this can be changed to Fjord Blue for $1,100 extra. The Recharge Ultimate gets the Charcoal Connect suede textile/Microtech upholstery as standard with the same extra-cost Fjord Blue interior optionally available, in addition to the no-cost Charcoal Fusion Microtech vinyl or $250 Midnight Zinc tailored wool blend with a Charcoal interior. All Recharge trims get Topography interior decor.
Although it is more practical than a sedan, the XC40 doesn't have the largest trunk in the segment. Behind the second row, you'll find a space measuring 16 cubic feet under cover, up to the top of the rear seatback. Packing all the way to the roof will enable you to fit in 20.4-21.7 cubic feet of luggage. That's enough for a weekly trip to the grocery store or two large suitcases. With the rear seats folded, there's a larger space measuring either 31.5 cubes up to the tops of the front seatbacks or a maximum of 57.5 cubes to the roof. By comparison, the BMW X1's trunk measures an impressive 25.7 cubes behind the rear seats or 57.2 cubes with its seats folded. We love the available trunk divider, which includes grocery hooks so your bags don't slide around. Another boon is that the luggage cover can be stored under the cargo floor when not in use.
In the cabin, small-item storage is handled by a large removable center-console waste bin, a small storage area head of the center console, and the usual glovebox, which features an extendable hook for a purse or other bags of up to 4.4 pounds in weight. Besides front cupholders, there are another two provided in a fold-down armrest at the back for when the middle rear seat isn't occupied. Finally, there are handy pockets in all four doors that can fit laptops.

The base Core starts things off and it is reasonably equipped with comfort and convenience items. It comes with a 12-inch digital gauge cluster, dual-zone climate control, three auto-dimming rearview mirrors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, textile upholstery, a power-adjustable driver's seat, and heated front seats. Being a Volvo, it comes with many standard safety features like blind-spot monitoring, cruise control, a rearview camera, rear parking sensors, a lane-keeping aid, and oncoming lane mitigation. Progressing to the higher trims adds items such as front parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, larger wheels, an upgraded sound system, a universal garage-door opener, a proximity key, a power-adjustable front passenger seat, and additional driver assists.
Volvo's options list is fairly comprehensive. By way of several packages, you can upgrade the XCX40 with a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, a 360-degree surround-view camera system, and the brand's advanced Pilot Assist driver-assistance feature with adaptive cruise control. You cannot order the panoramic moonroof on the Core, so if you want it, you have to go for the Plus or Ultimate.
Although it still uses the same nine-inch touchscreen, the infotainment system is all-new this year and is now a Google-based system with Google built-in, as well as a complimentary four-year subscription to several Google services, such as Assistant, Maps, and Play Store. The Recharge has had this system since last year and now all XC40s have it. Native cloud-based navigation is, therefore, part of the deal. Smartphone integration currently only extends to Apple CarPlay, but SiriusXM, voice commands, and Bluetooth streaming are standard. Although better than the old Sensus Connect system, we feel that the new system could be refined, because it's not always as intuitive to use as one would hope. The standard audio system has eight speakers but the Plus can be upgraded to a 13-speaker Harman Kardon audio system - which is standard on the Ultimate.
The base sound system features eight speakers, but in Plus configuration, you can upgrade to a 13-speaker Harman Kardon sound system which is standard on the Ultimate.
There are 16 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats of the XC40, although you can fit around 20 cubes if you pack all the way to the roof. Fold the seats down, and you get around 31.5 cubes to the top of the seats.
