2023 Civic Type R Interior

Honda calls the Civic Type R interior a performance-focused cockpit designed for intense driving experiences. There are new sports seats that are well bolstered and feature a suede effect; the driver sits lower than before, but visibility is improved thanks to thinner pillars, a lower hood, and the repositioning of the exterior side mirrors. Tech has been improved too, with a larger touchscreen for the infotainment, a new digital instrument cluster with a large tachometer, and an updated performance Datalogger that now works independently of a smartphone app. The Honda Civic Type R's iconic red seats are still standard, and the car has space for four in relative comfort. Dual-zone climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and red ambient lighting help to make the cabin feel special.

Seating and Interior Space

The duality of the Type R remains one of its strong suites, making track days and the daily grind possible with one car. That said, there's seating for only four occupants, despite a rear-seat bench. Up front, the driver and front passenger get the most space with 39.3 inches of headroom and 42.3 inches to stretch out your legs. There are new lightweight sport seats with sufficient bolstering to keep you in place when you're hooning it. Appropriately for the segment, the back seat gets less head- and legroom at 37.1 inches and 37.4 inches, respectively, but those are still good specifications for a hatch of this size. By comparison, the Type R's main rival, the Toyota GR Corolla, has far less second-row legroom at just 29.9 inches.

Interior Colors and Materials

只有一个室内颜色类型R, and that is the red/black combination we're accustomed to. The suede-effect fabric feels lovely to touch, and the red carpets offset against the black dashboard make for a menacing feel overall. As standard, there are also a leather-wrapped steering wheel and sport pedals. The quality of materials used throughout feels premium and fit and finish are solid. The aluminum shift knob has been redesigned and looks great in combination with the matching cabin trim, although leaving your Type R out in the sun will likely result in a burned palm if you're not careful.

2023 Civic Type R Trunk and Cargo Space

Benefits of the hatchback body style include a usable cargo hold, and in the Honda Civic Type R, cargo space comes in at 24.5 cubic feet with the rear seats in place. Those fold down in a 60/40 split and open up a much larger area for bigger items. Honda has yet to confirm what that figure is.

2023 Civic Type R Infotainment and Features

Features

There's just one model in the Type R lineup, and the features list is fairly generous. This includes dual-zone climate control, push-button start, and red ambient lighting. We would've liked to have seen heated front seats in the Honda Civic Type R, though. A 10.2-inch digital information cluster for the driver is new for this year, and the Type R features a tachometer and an exclusive meter for the +R drive mode that shows engine RPM and gear position. An updated Performance Datalogger works with the onboard computer and sensors now, so there's no need for a smartphone app to track performance data.

Safety features in the Honda Civic Type R include collision mitigation braking, road departure mitigation, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, and forward collision warning. Additionally, you get lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition, and auto high-beams as standard, and a driver attention monitor will ensure you don't doze off - not that we can imagine how driving a Type R could be boring enough for that to happen. Blind-spot monitoring is included and comes with cross-traffic monitoring, and the required rearview camera is a multi-angle unit with dynamic guidelines.

Infotainment

One of the gripes we had about the outgoing model was the dated infotainment setup, so this upgraded system on the new Type R is a welcome change. 2023 Honda Civic Type R models now have the largest touchscreen to date, at nine inches in size. This touchscreen is imbued with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and wireless charging is also standard. The audio system is a Bose Centerpoint premium unit that's ostensibly been designed specifically for the latest Civic lineup. It features 12 speakers, including a subwoofer. Navigation, SiriusXM, HD Radio, and Bluetooth are standard.
