The old car was a peppy performer, but the new X1 gains an additional 13 hp and a substantial torque boost, so the BMW X1's 0-60-mph sprint is now a claimed 6.2 seconds, although several sub-six results were obtained in independent testing. With 241 hp and its small size, performance is effortless, and it passes and merges without breaking a sweat. This also enables decent towing specs, and with the factory-fitted tow hitch, trailering capacity is an impressive XC40-matching 3,500 pounds.
Top speed is limited to 130 mph on the standard all-season tires, but this can be increased to 149 mph with performance tires fitted. Although xDrive all-wheel drive is standard, the X1 has only 8.1 inches of ground clearance, so it's no off-roader.
The only engine in the BMW X1 is a 2.0L turbocharged inline four-cylinder with 241 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. The old eight-speed automatic transmission is replaced with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic this year. Unfortunately, it's tuned for economy and can be reluctant to kick down on demand. An automatic start-stop system is standard, but it's unrefined in operation and switches the engine off at odd times. The previous FWD option is dropped altogether, and only an xDrive AWD drivetrain is offered for 2023.
