2021 BMW 4 Series Convertible Review: Summer Loving

by Michael Butler

2021年宝马4 se系列现在可转换cond generation and is better than ever. This midsize luxury soft-top manages to tick all the boxes, and we are left thoroughly impressed by its ability to provide drop-top looks with hardtop performance. Under the hood, the 2021 4 Series Convertible delivers up to 382 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque from a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 engine in the M440i. Power is sent to the rear or all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. The new 4 Series Convertible features a new soft-top roof with a smooth and quick-folding action and enough practical space for four. This vehicle was made for US summers along the West Coast, and competes with theAudi A5andMercedes-Benz C-Class convertibles.

2021 BMW 4 Series Convertible Changes:What's the difference vs. 2020 BMW 4 Series Convertible?

一切都在2021年宝马4系列可转换new this year. Although the same basic engines are carried over, these come with more power. The most significant change sees the folding soft-top take the place of last generation's folding hardtop, but despite this, stiffness has been bolstered, and the drive is promised to be just as quiet and comfy as before, with a fraction more headroom, too. The M440i now comes with an all-new 48-volt mild-hybrid system for the first time, the trunk is bigger on both models, and there's more tech and convenience than before. Essentially, the whole car has been refreshed from top to bottom.

Pros and Cons

  • Fast-folding soft top
  • It drives well for a car without a roof
  • Strong turbocharged power plants
  • It doesn't look half bad
  • We're still getting used to the face
  • Hair stylist image
  • Tight back seat
  • Lower reliability and safety ratings than a coupe/sedan

Engine and Transmission

Under the hood of the 4 Series Cabrio, you'll find either a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder gas engine with 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque (430i and 430i xDrive models) or a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with a more serious power output of 382 hp and 369 lb-ft (M440i and M440i xDrive). M440i models also benefit from a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that recuperates and stores energy. All 4 Series drop-tops make use of an 8-speed automatic transmission, and new owners get to choose between rear- or all-wheel-drive configurations. Performance from the bM440i trim is impressive: this car will get to 62 mph in only 4.9 seconds and hit a limited top speed of 155 mph. Despite all this power, BMW's engines are surprisingly fuel-efficient. Just don't go looking for official towing capacity ratings from this luxury cruiser.

Verdict:Is the 2021 BMW 4 Series Convertible A Good car?

BMW has hit the nail on the head. The open-top 4 Series is just as good as its hardtop coupe sibling, and puts on an impressive performance. Each review of the 2021 4 Series Convertible will have its own take on the new look, but we commend BMW for going with a traditional fabric soft top that is easy to use and doesn't add as much weight or take up as much space as a foldable hardtop. Inside, the 2-door 4 Series Convertible offers enough space to comfortably fit four average-sized adults and, as is to be expected from BMW, the interior feels suitably luxurious and refined. On the road, the Convertible feels just as taught and responsive as the hardtop version, which is an impressive feat of engineering. Powertrain options surpass expectations, too, and this Convertible can get going in a hurry if you opt for the M440i version. If you're looking for a four-seat German convertible in the $50k range, then the price of the 2021 BMW 4 Series Convertible should definitely draw you in, and everything else it has to offer will keep you interested.

What BMW 4 Series Convertible Model Should I Buy?

The 4 Series Convertible will most likely never see a track day and should spend most of its life cruising down coastal roads, soaking up the sun. For this reason, we don't think you can go wrong with the entry-level 2.0-liter 430i or 430i xDrive. With 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, this drop-top feels more than capable of entertaining, and its impressive body rigidity and a taught but refined suspension setup ensure you'll have a great time carving corners. At $53,300 for the rear-wheel-drive model, the 4 Series Convertible isn't exactly cheap, but you get a whole lot of car for the money.
