Top Car Manufacturers Join Forces To Rival Tesla Supercharger Network In America

BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis will install 30,000 chargers starting in 2024.

General Motors, BMW, Honda, Kia, Hyundai, Stellantis, and Mercedes-Benz have created a joint venture to accelerate the adoption of EVs in one of the world's biggest automotive markets and make life easier for existing EV owners.

This strategic alliance will use public and private funds to build the infrastructure. It will be available to all battery-powered electric vehicles, not just the ones from the marques mentioned above. With Combined Charging System (CCS) and North American Charging Standard (NACS) connectors at every station, anything from a Model 3 to aBMW i4will be able to top up at the new network.

The joint venture intends to become "the leading network of reliable, high-powered charging stations" on the North American continent."

The first stations should open in the United States in the summer of next year. Additional charge points will be established in Canada shortly. With several DC chargers at each site, customers will find it far easier to embark on long-distance drives in their electric vehicles. Furthermore, the joint venture plans on powering the entire network with renewable energy, reducing stress on the grid, and creating a truly eco-friendly experience.

The charging network promises to be a "best-in-class" experience. Focusing on customer comfort, the stations will be conveniently located and provide amenities like food and retail, restrooms, and more. There are plans to introduce flagship locations offering more upmarket amenities - much like Porsche doeswith its Charging Lounges.

Early plans suggest the charging stations will first be established in metropolitan areas and near major highways to cater to more Americans.

BMW'sCEO Oliver Zipsesaid, "North America is one of the world's most important car markets - with the potential to be a leader in electromobility. Accessibility to high-speed charging is one of the key enablers to accelerate this transition." At the same time, GM chief executive Mary Barra noted, "The better experience people have, the faster EV adoption will grow."

"The fight against climate change is the greatest challenge of our time. What we need now is speed - across political, social, and corporate boundaries. To accelerate the shift to electric vehicles, we're in favor of anything that makes life easier for our customers," added Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kallenius.

Now that Tesla hasopened its supercharger network upto other makes and models, and the government has plans tobuild even more charging points, it seems like range anxiety and charging woes may soon be a thing of the past. Now, if only we could get charging timesdown to ten minutes.
