Lamborghini SC63 Hypercar Revealed At Goodwood

Lamborghini reveals the car that will challenge Ferrari for hypercar glory at Le Mans next year.

Lamborghini has unveiled the SC63 for 2024 World Endurance Championship competition at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, and the hypercar looks absolutely spectacular. As with all the other entrants in the Hypercar class, the power output is limited to no more than 500 kilowatts, or 670 horsepower, but how each team achieves that is entirely up to them, so long as they all use the same gearbox and one of a very short list of approved chassis options.

In the case of the Lamborghini SC63 - whose name references the 10-year-old Squadra Corse racing division and the year in which Lamborghini was founded - that means a V8 resides in a Ligier-developed monocoque.

The engine is anall-new 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8, which could well find its way into the Huracan successorwith a redline as high as 10k. However, the turbos are arranged in a cold vee configuration for easy servicing and cooling of the turbines, and it's unclear if the Huracan will also adopt such a configuration. Regardless, Lamborghini says that for this motorsport application, the setup finds the best balance for tire grip, weight balance, drivability, and longevity.

As for the monocoque, Lamborghini is the first to use one designed and built by Ligier, which gave the Italian automaker freedom to specify much of the design, "including the development of the pushrod front suspension design, overall weight distribution, and ease of service for critical parts of the car." One of these is the bell housing, which sits between the rear of the engine and the front of the gearbox, where it bolsters torsional rigidity and houses the electric motor.

Despite several rules and regulations dictating much of the car's design, Lamborghini's Centro Stile design department was able to incorporate several iconic design cues, including the repetitive Ypsilon Y-shaped motif throughout the car. Another call to Lambo road cars is the lower side NACA duct on the profile, shaped like the side intake on a newCountach. The shape of the wheel arches is also said to be inspired by that of theRevuelto, while the Verde Mantis (green) and Nero Noctis (black) livery with Italiantricoloreaccents is borrowed from theHuracan GT3.

We'd love to see how this design works on a roadgoing vehicle, and sinceFerrari is taking the 499P to the road, we don't see any reason that Lambo can't offer a Le Mans-inspired roadgoing special of its own.

Thus far, real-world testing has not yet taken place - only simulated drives. But that will change soon. Lamborghini intends to enter one vehicle in the full FIA World Endurance Championship and another in the North American Endurance Championship races in the IMSA series. Iron Lynx will manage both teams, with drivers including former F1 contenders Daniil Kvyatand Romain Grosjean.

Even if you have no interest in motorsports, the SC63 is important because lessons learned in implementing hybrid tech willfind their way to future roadgoing supercars, including the aforementioned replacement for the Huracan and even the Urus, which can不再是与天然气动力系统.
