Other brands under the Volkswagen Group's umbrella are set to follow.

Audi has added YouTube to its built-in app store integrated into the infotainment system of select models. This means owners of the Audi A4, A5, Q5, A6, A7, A8, Q8 e-tron, ande-tron GT(models with the third-generation modular infotainment system (MIB 3) can now download the video streaming app through the infotainment system.

YouTube is the latest third-party app to be made available through Audi'sMultimedia Interface(MMI),the system released last March.

Audi is the first brand in the Volkswagen Group to introduce the technology, which was jointly developed with VW's Cariad. This allows customers to directly download and access third-party apps through the MMI without needing a smartphone, and will soon be rolled out across other VW Group brands.

Users can download various apps, including Music, Navigation, Parking & Charging, and News. During its launch last March, Audi's app store featured apps such as Amazon Music and Spotify.

The app store can be accessed via a separate MMI widget. The additional or newly downloaded apps will be added seamlessly to the touchscreen's user interface. One simply needs to tap the app's icon to launch it.

The addition of YouTube allows Audi vehicle owners to watch videos during charging stops, driving breaks, or waiting for someone while the vehicle is parked. The German carmaker claims the app works like it does on a smartphone. Of note, one can only play videos via YouTube when the vehicle is parked, which is obviously for safety reasons.

Audi added that video streaming will be available in select models in the summer of 2023, with other brands under the Volkswagen Group's umbrella to follow. Audi models will continue to support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Other than Audi, Volvo and Polestar rolled out a new over-the-air software update last June, which includes theintroduction of the YouTube app. Like Audi, the YouTube app can only be accessed when the vehicle is stationary.

Mercedes-Benz has taken a similar approach in providing new onboard entertainment as it integrates apps such asAngry Birds and TikTokinto the new E-Class. The apps can be downloaded at Mercedes Me, the carmaker's dedicated app store.
