2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Banned In Europe

This party stays in America.

The mighty Mustang has been a muscle car icon for over 50 years, but it's only been available in Europe for the last few years when the current-generation model arrived in 2015. Topping the range is the new2020 Mustang Shelby GT500, which is due to arrive in US dealers later this year.

However, Ford Performance Marketing Manager, Jim Ownes, has confirmed toMuscle Cars and Trucksthat, while the Shelby Mustang GT500 will be available in the US, Mexico, and the Middle East, it will be forbidden fruit in Europe. This probably shouldn't come as a surprise considering that Europe has stricter emissions regulations thatbanned sales of the Corvette and Camaro.

What is surprising, however, is that Ford recently showed off the Mustang Shelby GT500 in the UK at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last month, where it was driven up the famous hill climb by Vaughn Gittin Jr. Potential customers may at the event may have thought this meant the 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 will be available in the UK. In Europe, this means theMustang Bullittwill be the range-topping model, as theMustang Shelby GT350also won't be coming to Europe, although it's still possible to import one from aftermarket specialists.

There's clearly demand for the Mustang in Europe, too. In Q1 2019, Ford sold 2,300 Mustangs in Europe, an increase of over 27 percent compared to the same period last year, and 113,066 units worldwide. Since the sixth-generation Mustang launched in 2015, more than 500,000 units have been sold worldwide, including more than 45,000 in Europe.

In the US,pricing for the 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 starts at $73,995. Sadly, Europe will be missing out on the most powerful street-legal Ford ever made, as the new GT500 packs a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 enabling it to rocket from 0-62 mph in around 3.5 seconds, 0-100-0 mph in just 10.6 seconds, and hit a limited top speed of 180 mph.
