With competitors offering just a bit more, the likes ofthe Ford F-250andRam 2500may be better options when looking for a hard-working truck.

The Silverado 2500HD is big; it's imposing; and it's also decidedly boxy up front. It's gigantic, squared-off nose boasts copious amounts of chrome and a mesh grille with the Chevrolet bowtie prominently displayed. Exterior mirrors are either black or color-keyed, depending on trim level. A big truck like this needs to be well-planted, and as such, a range of 17, 18 and 20-inch wheels can be fitted. Three cab configuration dictate the size of the cabin, with the Regular Cab being shorter, the Double Cab offering a narrow back door set for rear-seat access and the Crew Cab presenting a full-sized back door. Mid-tier trims also get body-color or chrome bodyside moldings, rear wheelhouse liners, deep-tinted rear windows and a spray-on bedliner in the top trim. Wheelbase lengths also vary, from 144.2 inches on the shortest iteration, to 167.7 inches for the biggest. Widths for the 2500 HD are set at 80.5 inches, with its ponderous3500HDsibling topping out at 95.9 inches with dual-rear-wheels installed. All 2500HD models have a ground clearance of 9.7 inches.

While style takes a back seat to practicality with the Silverado 2500HD, a range of ten good-looking color choices are available for the big truck. Designed for brute strength, the Silverado 2500HD has two main powertrain options. A standard 6.0-liter Vortec V8 engine paired to a six-speed automatic transmission (and available as either FlexFuel or standard V8), which is equipped on all models and makes 360 hp and 380 lb-ft. Crew Cab variants have the option of upgrading to a 6.6-liter turbodiesel V8 that can manage 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of earth-shredding torque and is paired to an Allison 1000 six-speed automatic. The mammoth 6.6-liter diesel V8 reportedly averages around 15 miles per gallon in combined driving conditions. All models are equipped with a 36-gallon fuel tank, which would theoretically allow for a range of around 432 miles on the 6.0-liter V8 and 540 miles with the most powerful engine equipped.

The interior of the Silverado was designed predominantly for functionality and liveability, and so it's not particularly luxurious or plush. Although the general cabin design is incredibly dated - some may even say bland - it's well put together and offers good material quality throughout. It's very spacious too, so even the tallest of Cowboys and most muscular Linebackers will feel more than comfortable inside. However, due to the sheer size of the thing, visibility is somewhat hampered by not really knowing where the extremities of the vehicle are, as well as having broad and bulky pillars obstructing your view. Despite this, the Silverado will do well on long road trips with comfortable seats that offer good support, and an effective air conditioning system to keep you cool.

A heavy-duty truck such as this is highly versatile, and so the Silverado 2500HD offers seating options for either just two or three up front or up to six passengers in total. The front seats are comprised of a three-seater bench with outboard head restraints, with a fold-down armrest in the center position if you don't want to slide a third occupant in. The rear seats in Double Cab and Crew Cab variants, also seat three, with all seating positions offering comfort, support, and ample space. High Country editions have heating and ventilation on perforated leather bucket seats, which are also optionally available on some of the lower models.

You could host a full-on picnic in the cabin of this truck with the amount of space available on the Crew Cab models - there is headroom and legroom for ages, with all seating positions having more than enough room to stretch out, making even extended road trips a breeze. The Double Cab variant is slightly tighter, but only in the back due to the shorter cab. Still, 38.6 inches of headroom and 34.6 inches for leg space is sufficient for shorter trips with adult passengers. The Regular Cab's front-row-only seating remains spacious.

Basic upholstery in entry-level models is comprised of Dark Ash vinyl with Jet Black accents, with an optional upgrade to the same color scheme in cloth. The same applies to the LT trim but with added color options in Jet Black or Dune cloth with Cocoa accents. The Double Cab Silverado has a payload capacity ranging from 2,987 lbs to 3,276 lbs depending on which bed is equipped and which drivetrain is configured. Crew Cab editions have payloads starting at 2,356 lbs and max out at 3,233 lbs, depending on any combination of box length, drivetrain and engine equipped.

In the cabin, there are numerous storage options; rear-seat-equipped versions have back seats that do fold up if you want to load mid-size suitcases, boxes or equipment. We'd only suggest waiting for the redesigned version in 2020 for added modernization.

At the base of the range, the Regular Cab Silverado is only available in one trim, namely the WT Long Box, and is priced at $38,100. Moving up to the Double Cab variants, the Standard Box can be had in WT trim at $40,300 or LT trim for $45,700. Choosing the Long Box edition adds $200 to the overall price.

The Crew Cab models can be optioned in either SB or LB, as well as with any one of the three powertrain options, as well as either rear-wheel-drive or 4WD.
