2019 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Review: Heavy Duty Bowtie Power

雪佛兰's Silverado is nearing the end of its current lifespan, yet with fierce competition and a new heavy-duty truck on the way for 2020, one has to wonder whether the Silverado 2500 HD is still relevant today. Still, there's much to be said for this hard-working three-quarter-ton pickup. With loads of customization options in terms of cab configuration, bed length, and drivetrains, there seems to be a Silverado for every job on hand. Powerful engine options make for ridiculous towing capacities of up to 15,400 lbs in some configurations, and with its workhorse nature, the Silverado HD is a worthy consideration for purchase. However, a long list of negatives causes us to hesitate: chunky ride quality, below-average visibility, dodgy brakes, and a very dated interior make one wonder if it isn't better to opt for a used version or to wait for a new release in 2020. With competitors offering just a bit more, the likes ofthe Ford F-250andRam 2500may be better options when looking for a hard-working truck.

The Silverado 2500HD is big; it's imposing; and it's also decidedly boxy up front. It's gigantic, squared-off nose boasts copious amounts of chrome and a mesh grille with the Chevrolet bowtie prominently displayed. Exterior mirrors are either black or color-keyed, depending on trim level. A big truck like this needs to be well-planted, and as such, a range of 17, 18 and 20-inch wheels can be fitted. Three cab configuration dictate the size of the cabin, with the Regular Cab being shorter, the Double Cab offering a narrow back door set for rear-seat access and the Crew Cab presenting a full-sized back door. Mid-tier trims also get body-color or chrome bodyside moldings, rear wheelhouse liners, deep-tinted rear windows and a spray-on bedliner in the top trim. The Trailering package is standard from mid-range models, adding a tow-hitch receiver to the back end. Additionally, two box lengths further differentiate the various 2500HD models.

Dimensions

A heavy-duty hauler such as this has to aim to be two things: big, and strong, and the Silverado 2500HD manages this without even breaking a sweat. Due to having numerous configuration options (various cab sizes, two bed lengths, and numerous trim levels), dimensions are quite expansive. The smaller Regular Cab and Double Cab body range in length from 230 inches to 248.9 inches, depending on which load-bed is fitted. Similarly, the bigger Crew Cab has a total length of 239.5 or 258.4 inches in standard and long box forms respectively. The Ford F250 Super Duty is longer by almost eight inches. Wheelbase lengths also vary, from 144.2 inches on the shortest iteration, to 167.7 inches for the biggest. Widths for the 2500 HD are set at 80.5 inches, with its ponderous3500HDsibling topping out at 95.9 inches with dual-rear-wheels installed. All 2500HD models have a ground clearance of 9.7 inches.

  • Wheelbase 158.1 in
  • Height 77.9 in
  • Max Width 80.5 in

Exterior Colors

While style takes a back seat to practicality with the Silverado 2500HD, a range of ten good-looking color choices are available for the big truck. Available colors across the range include Red Hot, Summit White and Black with Metallic options being Havana Brown, Silver Ice, Graphite and the $395 Deep Ocean Blue. Top-of-the-range trims have access to additional premium shades, such as Cajun Red Tintcoat and Iridescent Pearl Tricoat, at costs of $495 and $995, respectively.

Silverado 2500HD Performance

The standard powertrain configuration is a 6.0-liter Vortec V8 capable of outputs of 360 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque - this can be had with a bi-fuel option allowing it to run on compressed natural gas (CNG) as well. A 6.6-liter turbodiesel V8 Duramax powerplant can be optioned and it pushes out 445 hp and a monstrous 910 lb-ft of torque on all models in the Crew Cab sub-trim. Regular and Double Cab variants must stick with the 6.0-liter V8. Ford's F-250 Super Duty truck comes with a 6.2-liter engine as standard, producing more in both horsepower and torque in its base model (385 hp and 430 lb-ft). By contrast, the Nissan Titan XD's 5.0-liter motor produces only 310 hp but offers up 555 lb-ft of torque from its top-end model. For the Silverado's diesel engine, getting to sixty will only take around 6.5 seconds, slightly quicker than the Ford F250 (which, admittedly, weighs a bit more).

With powerhouse engines under the hood, sturdy chassis construction, and loads of torque, the Silverado has a generous towing capacity of 14,400 lbs in models equipped with the 6.0-liter V8 and rear-wheel-drive and 15,400 lbs for the turbodiesel with the same drivetrain. The Ford F-250 is capable of 18,500 lbs in its strongest guise, surpassing the otherwise impressive 2500HD.

Engine and Transmission

Designed for brute strength, the Silverado 2500HD has two main powertrain options. A standard 6.0-liter Vortec V8 engine paired to a six-speed automatic transmission (and available as either FlexFuel or standard V8), which is equipped on all models and makes 360 hp and 380 lb-ft. Crew Cab variants have the option of upgrading to a 6.6-liter turbodiesel V8 that can manage 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of earth-shredding torque and is paired to an Allison 1000 six-speed automatic. While shooting off the line is hardly the point of this truck, it manages acceleration just fine from a standstill, can overtake without hesitation, and - while more suited to the work yard - will also growl around town with no real problems in terms of power and throttle responses. Getting up to highway speeds is easy as well, although the rough-and-ready engine vocalization can be rather grating.

For those who need ultimate hauling ability, the huge amounts of torque from the diesel motor ensure that towing even the heaviest trailers is achieved with ease.

Handling and Driving Impressions

2500年的西尔维拉多高清一些小窍门了its sleeve, with a surprising ability to handle quite well for its size. It certainly wasn't designed for city dwellers though (in which case its smaller sibling, the Silverado 1500, would make a better option unless you specifically want the maximum towing capacities). With weighted steering feel that remains on point at speed, only hitting curves or bends will leave you wondering what the tires are up to. Surprisingly, there isn't all that much body roll in corners, provided you drive in a sedate manner - but this conversely means the ride can be harsh over anything other than the best surfaces, an area where the Silverado is beaten by numerous rivals. Additionally, the brakes aren't that great. Emergency braking needs you to smash the pedal all the way down to bring the behemoth to a stop.

With its hulking size, the Silverado 2500HD can tackle off-road adventures too, as long as you have wide-open spaces around you. Narrow tracks and trails will be problematic, even with the optional off-roading packages and good ground clearance offered. Still, daily driving isn't particularly pleasant, with stiff suspension and only mediocre levels of comfort.

Silverado 2500HD Gas Mileage

The EPA has not released figures for the Silverado 2500HD, and Chevrolet has not committed to gas mileage statistics either; however, real-world figures, as reported by new car owners, indicate that Silverado's equipped with the 6.0-liter V8 engine deliver between 12 and 13 miles per gallon in mixed driving styles. The mammoth 6.6-liter diesel V8 reportedly averages around 15 miles per gallon in combined driving conditions. All models are equipped with a 36-gallon fuel tank, which would theoretically allow for a range of around 432 miles on the 6.0-liter V8 and 540 miles with the most powerful engine equipped.

Silverado 2500HD Interior

The interior of the Silverado was designed predominantly for functionality and liveability, and so it's not particularly luxurious or plush. Although the general cabin design is incredibly dated - some may even say bland - it's well put together and offers good material quality throughout. It's very spacious too, so even the tallest of Cowboys and most muscular Linebackers will feel more than comfortable inside. However, due to the sheer size of the thing, visibility is somewhat hampered by not really knowing where the extremities of the vehicle are, as well as having broad and bulky pillars obstructing your view. Despite this, the Silverado will do well on long road trips with comfortable seats that offer good support, and an effective air conditioning system to keep you cool.

Seating and Interior Space

A heavy-duty truck such as this is highly versatile, and so the Silverado 2500HD offers seating options for either just two or three up front or up to six passengers in total. The front seats are comprised of a three-seater bench with outboard head restraints, with a fold-down armrest in the center position if you don't want to slide a third occupant in. The rear seats in Double Cab and Crew Cab variants, also seat three, with all seating positions offering comfort, support, and ample space. On WT and LT trims, seating is cloth-appointed, with manual adjustments available, including lumbar support. On the LTZ trims and upwards, heated leather seating is standard, which also has a nifty split-usage function - meaning you can direct heat to your aching back without having a roasted rump at the same time. High Country editions have heating and ventilation on perforated leather bucket seats, which are also optionally available on some of the lower models.

You could host a full-on picnic in the cabin of this truck with the amount of space available on the Crew Cab models - there is headroom and legroom for ages, with all seating positions having more than enough room to stretch out, making even extended road trips a breeze. The Double Cab variant is slightly tighter, but only in the back due to the shorter cab. Still, 38.6 inches of headroom and 34.6 inches for leg space is sufficient for shorter trips with adult passengers. The Regular Cab's front-row-only seating remains spacious.

Interior Colors and Materials

Basic upholstery in entry-level models is comprised of Dark Ash vinyl with Jet Black accents, with an optional upgrade to the same color scheme in cloth. The same applies to the LT trim but with added color options in Jet Black or Dune cloth with Cocoa accents. For the LTZ, all the available cloth options apply, but Jet black leather with corresponding accents can be had as well as Dune leather with Cocoa trims and Dark Ash-themed leather. At the top of the range, the High Country edition goes all-in with perforated leather seats in Jet Black with Ash Gray accents or a Saddle brown theme that takes the High Country theme quite literally.

Silverado 2500HD Trunk and Cargo Space

As with most rivals in this segment, varying bed lengths mean the cargo space is not only practical, but versatile too. The Silverado 2500HD can be had as a standard six-foot six-inches length (SB) or an eight-foot Long Box (LB). SB models have 61 cubic feet available for loading cargo, and the LB variants provide 15.3 cubes more.

The Double Cab Silverado has a payload capacity ranging from 2,987 lbs to 3,276 lbs depending on which bed is equipped and which drivetrain is configured. Crew Cab editions have payloads starting at 2,356 lbs and max out at 3,233 lbs, depending on any combination of box length, drivetrain and engine equipped.

In the cabin, there are numerous storage options; rear-seat-equipped versions have back seats that do fold up if you want to load mid-size suitcases, boxes or equipment. For personal items, the Silverado more than delivers. Huge pockets and bins abound, a large center console is available, and dual gloveboxes can hold notebooks, phones, and even slim laptops. Numerous cup holders are found in the front console and in every door. A floor console and under-seat storage can be optioned on additionally.

Silverado 2500HD Infotainment and Features

Features

Not that you would necessarily want your adolescent behind the wheel of this mammoth truck, but just in case you do, Chevrolet equips the Silverado with teen driver technology to help keep them responsible. A rearview camera and cruise control are equipped from the base model, with forward collision alert, lane departure warning, park assist, and safety alert driver's seat available on top-end models (standard on High Country). All trim levels, barring the entry-level WT, also get remote keyless entry and a remote locking tailgate. Notable convenience features include a heated steering wheel on the top trim, heating and ventilation for front seats as options from mid-range, as well as a universal home remote, 110-volt power outlet, power sliding rear window, and passenger assist handles on the A-pillars.

Infotainment

入门级的信息娱乐系统由of a seven-inch color touchscreen display with an AM/FM stereo and Bluetooth audio streaming for select smartphones only - six speakers are standard. This is upgraded to an eight-inch unit on the LT and LTZ specs, and adds USB ports, an auxiliary jack, and voice-activated technology. The High Country trim adds navigation and a premium Bose seven-speaker setup with subwoofer, but only if you choose front bucket seats for your ride. A single-slot CD player and HD radio is available for all but the entry-level trim. Using the Chevy MyLink system is not complicated; the system is user-friendly but doesn't run as smoothly as competing systems do. Slow inputs and fussy smartphone connectivity can be frustrating, but at least both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard inclusions. A rear-seat entertainment system can be optioned on to the top two trims and includes a DVD/Blu-Ray system with a 9.2-inch LCD display.

Silverado 2500HD Problems and Reliability

Certain Silverado 2500HD models fitted with the Duramax 6.6-liter engine and an engine-block heater were recalled in 2019 for a potential short circuit and failure. Although J.D. Power has not rated the Silverado range, few complaints or manufacturer communications are noted. Notably, J.D. Power awarded the Silverado HD the title of highest ranked large, heavy-duty pickup in initial- and long-term quality assessments.

The Silverado 2500HD is covered by a comprehensive warranty schedule, including a three-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty (with five years/100,000 miles for diesel engines) and a five-year/60,000-mile roadside assistance plan.

Silverado 2500HD Safety

In terms of safety, the NHTSA gave the Silverado 2500HD an overall safety rating of four stars out of five, with three stars awarded in frontal crash tests, full marks for side crash tests, and three stars for rollover evaluations. While the IIHS has not put the 2500HD models through any tests, the Silverado HD's baby brother, the Silverado 1500 received mostly Good scores, with only a point lost in frontal overlap testing.

Key Safety Features

Safety in the Silverado 2500HD relies on more than just the sheer size of the truck, and frontal, curtain, and head airbags are a standard feature. All models are fitted with teen driver technology, and the Chevrolet OnStar Safety & Security Plan is included for all but the base model, which adds automatic crash response, emergency services, and roadside assistance, with a complimentary one-month subscription. The only standard driver aids in the base model are a rearview camera and cruise control, while upper-level trims get remote access, front and rear parking assist, and lane departure warning (optional package for mid-level trims, standard for the top-end variant). This isn't much in the grand scheme of things, and the base level Ford F-250 rival comes equipped with trailer-sway control, hill start assist and an integrated trailer-brake controller over what the 2500HD offers.

Verdict:Is the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD a good Truck?

西尔维拉多2500 hd的魅力在于它的实用性ity and it's sheer ability to haul stuff around. Although it doesn't have the presence of the likes of the Ford F-250 or the ability to tow as much, it manages to drag 15,400 pounds in its strongest iteration. It is fitted with good basic infotainment, a comfortable - albeit outdated - interior, and has ample space inside that really lend itself to being an excellent workhorse. Additionally, with so much customization at your discretion, there is a Silverado 2500HD for every occasion. Making ample power and torque from any of its engine options, this truck serves its purpose - to labor hard and make life easy for the owner. If you are going to spend more time driving this beast in town than actually making it work for you, you may be better off looking at its baby brother just in terms of size and convenience. But, while competitors may offer a bit more on-board tech, the Silverado 2500HD ticks all the boxes that a heavy-duty hauler needs to. We'd only suggest waiting for the redesigned version in 2020 for added modernization.

What's the Price of the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD?

At the base of the range, the Regular Cab Silverado is only available in one trim, namely the WT Long Box, and is priced at $38,100. Moving up to the Double Cab variants, the Standard Box can be had in WT trim at $40,300 or LT trim for $45,700. Choosing the Long Box edition adds $200 to the overall price.

The Crew Cab models can be optioned in either SB or LB, as well as with any one of the three powertrain options, as well as either rear-wheel-drive or 4WD. Entry-level trims on the Standard Box Crew Cab have an MSRP of $38,400 with the base engine; LT trims cost $43,700, while LTZ and High Country models have a starting price of $49,500 and $55,900 respectively. Opting for the diesel engine will set you back more or less $10k additionally while upgrading to four-wheel-drive adds a further few thousand dollars to the overall price. Opting for the Long Box on any of the above will only up the price by $200, although the High Country trim cannot be had with the bigger bed.

All prices exclude taxes, licensing, registration, and delivery and handling fees of $1,495.

2019 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Models

The 2019 range consists of three body sizes, namely Regular, Double, and Crew Cabs, which are - in the extended cabin models - available as either Standard Box or Long Box versions. The Double Cab variants have two sub-trims, namely the WT and LT. Crew Cabs come in WT, LT, LTZ and High Country editions. A standard 6.0-liter V8 engine is equipped across the range but can be optioned out for a diesel motor on the Crew Cab bodies. A CNG-capable 6.0-liter V8 is also available on certain trims.

Entry-level WT trims have a heavy-duty automatic locking rear differential, teen driver technology, daytime running lamps, high-visibility trailering mirrors (not on the regular cab), and a chrome grille surround. 17-inch wheels are standard, as is a rearview camera, single-zone climate control, cruise control and rear folding bench on the extended cabin variants. Infotainment is taken care of by a seven-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality.

LT models add heated, power-adjustable trailering mirrors, body-colored moldings, remote locking for the tailgate, and an upgraded eight-inch infotainment screen. Wi-Fi for up to seven devices is equipped and the steering is leather-wrapped. Keyless entry, deep-tinted rear windows, and CD/MP3 player integration are standard.

One model up, the LTZ is available as Crew Cab body style only and features the Trailer Package, outside heated and powered mirrors with an auto-dimming feature, chrome exterior accents, 18-inch chromed-aluminum wheels, dual-zone climate control, a 110-volt power outlet, and leather upholstery.

The top-of-the-line High Country edition adds forward collision warning, lane departure alert, front and rear parking sensors, and 20-inch chrome wheels. A Bose premium seven-speaker sound system is included, as are wireless charging, navigation, and heated and ventilated perforated leather front bucket seats. The steering is also heated, and a unique Saddle-colored interior is reserved for this trim.

Additional Packages

除了可选发动机和传动系统变化ations, the Silverado 2500HD can be further customized through the addition of numerous packages. The WT and LT trims can be equipped with a Convenience Package that ranges in price, depending on body style (starting at around $710) which adds tinted windows, a 110-volt outlet, power windows, keyless entry on the WT, and add power driver's seat adjustments and dual-zone climate control on the LT. The Texas and All Star Edition packages can be added to the LT trim for unique badging and a few minor conveniences, with varying prices as well. The LTZ trim has the option of upgrading to the Bose premium sound system, as well as front and rear parking sensors and a heated steering wheel by means of the $1,165 LTZ Plus Package. An $845 Driver Alert Package, for lane departure warning, forward collision alert, and parking sensors. The top-end High Country trim. Snow Plow packages for the various trims can also be added on for those in cold-weather states.

What Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Model Should I Buy?

The question of which Silverado to buy largely depends on your reason for buying one - as this is a vehicle designed to work, and work hard, it makes sense to choose the variant that can meet those needs. Still, the mid-range LTZ Crew Cab variant does have most of the boxes ticked for comfort, convenience, available features, and the ability to add the longer bed on the back for a minimal amount. If maximum towing capacity is most important, stick to the rear-wheel-drivetrain and add the fifth-wheel towing option to get over 15,000 lbs hitched to your Chevy. The excessive cost of equipping the high-powered diesel engine needs to be carefully considered, though, as it can push the price close to $60,000 quite easily, but the immense amount of torque will be a boon for frequent towers.

2019 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD vs Ram 2500

t的顶部he line comparisons between the Silverado and the Ram yield interesting results. While the spacious cabin of the Silverado remains near the top of its class, the Ram solidly soldiers ahead with a brilliant, beautiful cabin that seems to be more attuned to an SUV. Seating can be heated and ventilated even in the rear seats on the Dodge, and there are fewer hard plastic surfaces and cheap materials in the cabin overall. Giving off a much more luxurious vibe, the Dodge Ram steals ahead even more with its smoother, more comfortable ride. Swallowing up road imperfections and absorbing even mid-size bumps seems to be second-nature to the Ram, and even with a trailer hitched, proves to be just that much more controlled, pulling 12,750 lbs without any strain. With priorities equally balanced between luxury and function, the Ram is the winner in this comparison by a long-shot, based on its stunning interior and effortless towing capabilities. However, if you need more towing ability, the Silverado is the one to pick, although the Ram 2500 will be more than a match in that case.

2019 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD vs Chevrolet Silverado 1500

A clear price difference between these two siblings is the most obvious difference, with the 1500 coming in at over $5,000 cheaper. Both share the same general layout in models and trims, with regular, double and crew cabs - but the 1500 gets a short bed or a standard bed only. Clearly more geared to light-duty work, the Silverado 1500 is much more daily-driver oriented, and its size is less ponderous than its heavy-duty-oriented sibling. Despite coming in at 17-inches shorter in length, with a wheelbase 11-inches shorter too, the 1500 isn't short on interior space. Comparing Double Cab iterations on both models, the 1500 actually comes out on top in terms of headroom for both front and back seats, as well as offering better shoulder room and legroom in the rear. It also weighs in with a significantly lower curb weight, at 4,693 lbs for most models to the 2500HD's 6,199 lbs. Despite all of these seemingly major differences, the 1500 still manages a maximum towing capacity of 12,200 pounds, which pales in comparison to the 2500's huge capacity thanks to a nearly 1,000 lb-ft torque figure from the available diesel engine. It also stands to reason that the 1500 would have a marginally better gas mileage estimates, managing around 17 mpg to the 15 mpg the 2500HD manages at best. While these vehicles have very different characters, the DNA remains the same. Both are excellent workhorses, with the smaller model better suiting city living, and the bigger format living a happier life on the ranch ow towing huge loads cross-country.
