Is this a Golf or something else entirely?
Volkswagen has some busy times ahead of it. Not only will the production-spec version of theID.Buzzdebut on March 9, but the Chattanooga, Tennessee factory will begin series production of the US market ID.4. Currently, the all-electric crossover is being imported from Germany. Additional fully electric vehicles are also forthcoming, including a Tesla Model 3 fighter/Arteonreplacement potentially called theID.6. In short, VW is all-in with EVs.
But today it released a mysterious teaser on its official Facebook page of what seems to be the silhouette of a Golf hatchback. The caption says "We're launching an NFT (Notably Fast Transporter). Coming February 2022."
In case you've all been stuck inside way too long under lockdown over the past year and a half, an NFT normally stands for a non-fungible token. Defined as a non-interchangeable unit of data stored on blockchain, NFTs are normally associated with reproducible digital files that include anything from artwork, audio recordings, and photos. VW doesn't appear to be issuing a typical NFT and we're somewhat at a loss as to what's coming later next month. All we can do is speculate.
First guess: a new Golf variant, possibly theGTI TCR. Our spy photographers have been snapping images of TCR test mules since spring 2020. This hardcore, track-focused GTI would likely slot in between the standard GTI and the AWDGolf R.
The test mules revealed a lowered suspension, a more aggressive front bumper with larger air intakes, and a bigger rear spoiler. Sources claim the interior is also due for a slight overhaul with features like bucket seats, carbon fiber trim, and a new steering wheel. Under the hood, the GTI's 2.0-liter turbo inline-four, which now produces 241 horsepower, is said to be getting a 55-hp or so increase for a new total of 296 hp. Power will still be sent to the front wheels only (the Golf R will retain its AWD advantage) through a dual-clutch gearbox. No six-speed manual is planned.
Whatever VW is up to, we'll know for certain on February 22.
