Toyota Considering Prius GRMN Performance Variant

Rumor /5 Comments

If it comes to fruition, it will join the GR-branded Corolla, 86, and Supra.

A report from Japan claims that Toyota plans to launch a performance version of the all-newPriusunder the GRMN brand. According to Japan'sBest Car, whichaccurately predicted the existence of the GR Corollaa few years ago, the Japanese automaker is referring to the performance-focused Prius as a GRMN model. GRMN models are slotted above GR models, like the 86 and Supra, in the performance realm. AGRMN Suprais also rumored to be in the works.

Reportedly, the Prius GRMN will receive an enhanced unibody featuring additional spot welds and industrial adhesives to stiffen the chassis further. Coincidentally (or not), the fifth-generation Prius utilizes the same GA-C chassis as the GR Corolla.

Additional improvements call for a stiffer suspension, beefier brakes, and an upgraded interior with the usual GR enhancements.

What remains unknown is which version of the new Prius the GRMN variant will be based on: the standard hybrid or the plug-in hybrid. The report predicts it'll be the Prius Prime.

That means the "performance Prius" could come with an Atkinson-cycle 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, currently rated at 220 horsepower. Toyota claims it'll go from 0-60 mph in 6.6 seconds. Not exactly a hot rod, but it's a Prius we're talking about here. We doubt the folks at Gazoo Racing will be able to bolt a turbo to that powertrain, but it shouldn't be ruled out. The Crown hybrid is equipped with a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-pot, after all.

Alternatively, Toyota could go bold and swap out that engine for the GR Corolla'sfantastic turbocharged three-cylinder. Both models ride on the same platform, so, technically, this is possible.

But doing so would require a significant financial investment we're unsure Toyota is willing to make. Also, the GR Corolla's engine has not yet been connected to a hybrid system.

Hey, there's a first time for everything. No specific timeline was given when the Prius GRMN will launch (if at all), but it'll undoubtedly make its way to our side of the globe.
