This Porsche 911 GT3 Has The Perfect Custom Paint Color

Stunning barely begins to describe it.

What you're looking at is a custom-orderedPorsche 911 GT3built for Leh Keen, a pro driver who takes part in the Porsche Carrera Cup North America one-make series. He alsosmashed an indoor speed world record last year in a Taycan Turbo S. If that's not enough, he's also helped build many off-road spec 911s through The Keen Projects for enthusiasts. Up until now, shockingly, he never ordered a new 911 from the factory. When he decided to do so, he wanted his 911 GT3 to be unique, so he turned to the brand's Paint to Sample program.

The time-lapse video below shows the two-day 117-stage assembly process of his car at Porsche's Zuffenhausen plant beginning with the shell and, ultimately, rolling off the line. Before assembly can begin, the chassis spends more than a day going through preparation in the body and paint shop.

一个vehicle like the 911 consists of several different steel and aluminum materials, along with carbon fiber and polypropylene. In short, paint batches must accommodate all exterior features equally and result in the same color. It's harder to do than it sounds.

The first stage is to degrease the body and put it through an electro-chemical process. The body is then dipped into a basin filled with electrophoretic dip paint and deionized water. A primer is then added, and then the base coat and clear coat. The standard color requires about four liters of liquid application over three stages. The final clear coat layer also happens to be the thickest and is sprayed between 30 to 50 micrometers. The painted car is finally dried at a temperature of up to 392 degrees Fahrenheit for over two and a half hours.

For Keen's 911 GT3, he said he "wanted to have this newest, modern 911 but then coated with a very classic old color. I told a few people I was going to go gold. People thought it was risky, and it really reinforced my choice and I wanted to see how it would turn out. I think a lot of people couldn't quite picture the gold in their head."

It turns out the Gold Bronze Metallic color has only been ordered 24 times, and this is the first time it's been applied to a 992 generation 911. And in case you're wondering, this color can also be had on the Macan and Panamera, again through the Paint to Sample program.
