TEASER: Here's Your First Look At The US-Bound Toyota Land Cruiser

Toyota says it chose to reinvent the Land Cruiser. What could that mean?

Toyota has released a teaser for the new US-spec Land Cruiser, giving us our first look at the iconic off-roader.

The shadowy image shows the new model is a large brute, dwarfing the original Land Cruiser parked opposite. "With 65 years of heritage, you can choose to slow down or reinvent yourself. We chose the latter. Stay tuned for more updates," said Toyota. While that doesn't sound like much, the automaker has given us a clue.

By saying the Land Cruiser has been reinvented, Toyota could be implying the model we will be receiving isn't the same as the rest of the world. The last variant sold here was the J200, which was replaced by the J300 globally. Sadly, this iteration wasn't brought over to the States, with Toyota claiming that the all-newSequoia足以填补这一缺口。

So are we getting the J300, or is this something else? We think it's something else.

Based on the teaser, the outline is similar to the J300 and the newLexus GX, a luxurious version of the Land Cruiser, revealed earlier this year. A rumor suggests Toyota will sella rebadged version of the GXas the Land Cruiser, providing loyal Toyota customers with a rugged yet plush off-roader.

The GX has previously been sold as the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado in global markets, but the rumor claims Toyota USA may drop the Prado suffix and simply market it under the iconic Land Cruiser nameplate.

This would make a lot of sense, as Toyota would protect Lexus sales. Towards the end of the J200's run, the vehicle was retailing for close to $90,000, which is a lot of money. Its Lexus-badged sibling eventually became the stronger seller, which is possibly what gave Toyota the idea to market the Prado as a more "affordable" Land Cruiser.

Another rumor suggests the American-spec Land Cruiserwill adopt retro styling cuesas it goes up against the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler.

Of course, there's a very small chance the J300 could make its way to America. A new Land Cruiser GR Sport was spotted in Indiana earlier this yearsporting manufacturer plates. That could mean Toyota is just testing the mighty SUV on American roads, or it's fine-tuning it to our tastes. We will only know for sure once it is revealed. Before that happens, expect a slew of teasers to be revealed - we all know how long Toyota tortured us with the slow reveal of theTacoma.

Should it be based on the GX, we can expect the US-market Land Cruiser to receive a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 engine with 349 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. The Land Cruiser 300, sold everywhere else, is offered with the same gasoline V6, albeit in a higher state of tune (409 hp). A turbodiesel six-cylinder is also available.

We can't wait to see what form the new Land Cruiser will take when it returns, and we look forward to decoding the multiple teasers coming our way.
