Ram 1500 TRX Fuel Economy Numbers Are A Joke

TheRam 1500 TRXis the most powerful pickup in the world right now. Powering this beast is the same 6.2-liter supercharged Hemi V8 engine found in theDodge Challenger SRT Hellcatand Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk producing 702 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque, leaving theFord F-150 Raptorin the dust.

Ram claims the TRX will accelerate from 0-62 mph in 4.5 seconds, but a recent test revealed the performance pickup is even faster after it posted a0-62 mph sprint time of 3.9 seconds. Unsurprisingly, this phenomenal performance has a detrimental effect on the fuel economy. The EPA has released estimated fuel economy figures for the TRX, and they are terrible.

What did you expect from a pickup truck that has 700 hp and weighs over 6,000 pounds? According to the EPA, the Ram 1500 TRX has an estimated fuel economy rating of 10/14/12 mpg city/highway/combined. That makes it even less efficient than the Dodge Charger and Challenger Hellcat, which will both do 15 mpg combined, and one less mpg combined than the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk.

But let's face it, fuel economy probably isn't a top priority for buyers of the TRX. For comparison, Ram's closest competitor, the Ford F-150 Raptor, is more efficient, rated at 15/18/16 mpg city/highway/combined.

This isn't surprising considering it has a 450-hp V6 instead of a thirsty 702-hp V8. However, Ford will reportedly fight back by stuffing the 5.2-liter "Predator" V8 that powers Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 into a limited-edition version of the next-generation F-150 Raptor. In the GT500, this unit produces 760 hp and 625 lb-ft of torque, but it will be detuned to around 725-750 hp. As a result, expect the fuel economy to plummet in this variant of the new Raptor. Pricing for the 2021 Ram TRX 1500 starts at $69,950, but be prepared for some steep annual fuel costs.
