Only One Porsche Model Nearly Doubled Its Yearly Sales

And it's all thanks to a new body style.

Porsche learned years ago itsCayenne SUVwas a smashing sales success. The first generation launched for the 2003 model year and despite some early pushback from 911 and other brand purists, the Cayenne has proven itself time and again. Thanks to a variety of powertrains, including the turbo and hybrid models, Porsche has managed to increase the Cayenne's appeal, at least to those who can afford one. But 2019 was different from all previous years for one very important reason: the launch of theCayenne Coupebody style.

The final 2019 sales figures prove this was a brilliant decision on Porsche's part. A total of 19,001 Cayennes were sold last year, compared to 10,733 in 2018. Thanks to the Cayenne Coupe and its respective turbo and hybrid variants, Cayenne sales nearly doubled year over year.

In fact, the Cayenne was the only current Porsche model to experience sales a massive sales increase last year. The success of the Cayenne, in large part, helped Porsche North America succeed in a 7.6 percent sales overall sales growth compared to 2018. Porsche did not provide a precise breakdown between Cayenne SUV and Cayenne Coupe models, only releasing combined sales. But for anyone who thought the idea of the Cayenne Coupe body style was not a good idea, the numbers now speak for themselves.

The news also comes at a great time for the German automaker as it has been celebrating its 70th anniversary in North America. It all began back in 1950 when Max Hoffman opened three Porsche dealerships.

"It's now my honor, 70 years after those first steps, to be part of the Porsche team that delivered over 60,000 new cars in the U.S. last year," said Klaus Zellmer, President and CEO of PCNA. "Porsche has evolved over time, from building one exciting roadster to offering a full range of models developed on the track for everyday use. All of our cars remain the sports car of their segments – and the same is true as we enter a new era with the first U.S. deliveries of the all-electric Taycan in December."

And speaking of theTaycan, a grand total of130 examples were sold in 2019, though deliveries are only now getting underway.
