Brand New BAC Mono Supercar Is A Toned-Down Mono R

With a naturally aspirated engine revving to 8,000 rpm, the new BAC Mono should be exquisite to drive.

  • New BAC Mono features naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-pot
  • 311 horsepower, 243 lb-ft of torque
  • 0-60 mph in 2.6 seconds
  • Mono is now 55 pounds lighter

Briggs Automotive Company (BAC) has unveiled its latest version of the Mono supercar, endowing it with some of the upgrades thelimited-production Mono Rgot back in 2019. To understand exactly what is new here, allow us to give you a quick refresher on the Mono's past variants.

The original one launched in 2011 and has been continually refined and updated. This used a Ford Duratec 2.3-liter EcoBoost, like the type you'd find in a baseMustang, but it was modified by Cosworth and produced 280 horsepower.

The Mono also had nearly equal weight distribution from front to rear. In 2015, this engine was replaced by a 2.5-liter Mountune Racing motor producing 305 hp, and it is from this variant that the new model has been born.

The Mono R revealed in 2019 enhanced the naturally-aspirated four-pot to the tune of 343 hp with 243 lb-ft of torque and dropped around 55 pounds of weight, enabling 0-60 mph in 2.6 seconds.

But as a limited-volume model, BAC doesn't want to step on any toes with the launch of its new "regular" Mono. As a result, this 2.5-liter power plant generates 311 hp and 231 lb-ft. With less weight than the old Mono but more than the R, the 1,257-pound Mono can do 0-60 in 2.7 seconds. That's the same acceleration figure you got from the heavier, more powerful turbo variantthis new Mono replaces.

In evolving the Mono, BAC has also altered the weight distribution, which is now more heavily biased toward the rear (41:59 front:rear). Pirelli has also worked with the company to provide a complete selection of made-for-Mono Trofeo R rubber, from slick to wet tires.

As usual, a six-speed sequential transmission is the only option, and buyers can choose differing gear ratios depending on where they intend to use the car. Ideally, a buyer would select short gears for a small, twisty track and longer ones where top speed is more important than acceleration. The Mono is usable on the road, but we doubt it'll be the preferred grocery-getter in any garage.

As for styling changes, BAC says that the shark-nose front and LED headlights call to mind the Mono R. It also says that "every element and every surface have been carefully honed to enhance aerodynamics," culminating in a spoiler that extends over the rear arches. To anyone but the most obsessive fans, the new Mono looks identical to the old one - not that we're complaining; this is still one of the most visually-arresting vehicles on the planet.

Orders have already opened, and the first example will be delivered afterMonterey Car Weekfestivities conclude. Pricing is not mentioned, but expect to pay north of $250,000.
