ICE Cars Crush EVs For In-Car Tech Experience

New study highlights Genesis and Hyundai as the most innovative brands for new technologies.

JD Power has released the results of its2023 US Tech Experience Index Study, also known as the TXI Study, which explores the user experience with modern vehicle technology, and the news isn't good for fully electric vehicles relative to internal combustion engine (ICE) models.

The study is designed to assess new vehicle technologies and the potential problems encountered with them. In the 2023 study - based on responses from 82,472 owners of 2023 model-year vehicles - it was found that 17 of the 21 advanced features available on both EVs and ICE cars were more prone to quality defects on EVs.

Satisfaction is lower for EVs for a staggering 86% of advanced technologies versus ICE cars, measured in problems per 100 vehicles (PP100). Remote parking assistance and interior gesture controls represented the biggest gulf in issues between EVs and ICE cars.

ICE Cars Less Problematic, More Satisfying

For EVs, there were 27.4 problems per 100 vehicles for remote parking assistance, whereas the same feature on ICE cars had a rate of 10.7 problems per 100 cars. For gesture controls, EVs returned a figure of 49.6 PP100 compared to 31.2 PP100 for gas-powered cars.

JD Power says that these findings mirror the trend from its 2023 Initial Quality (IQS) and 2023 Automotive Performance, Execution, and Layout (APEAL) studies, where ICE cars also outperform EVs for owner satisfaction.

For the IQS, total vehicle problems for EVs, excluding Tesla, were 46% higher than for ICE cars. In the APEAL study, satisfaction among EV owners was lower than ICE cars in nine of ten categories.

Impressive Technologies, Imperfect Execution

JD Power noted that newer automakers like Tesla, Rivian, Lucid, and Polestar deliver levels of innovation far exceeding that of legacy brands. However, small sample sizes and state registration restrictions prohibit them from being ranked in the study. Innovation has come at the expense of a positive user experience. With the exception of Polestar, these newer manufacturers are still seeing a high level of average problems with advanced technologies.

Delving deeper into specific technologies, owners found biometric tech to be undesirable. Eye-movement technologies are less problematic but more annoying than tech such as facial recognition. Reverse automatic emergency braking, safe exit assist, and automatic emergency steering all declined in usage over the last year.

On a positive note,plug-and-charge technologysuch as that offered by EVgo is much appreciated by owners, with three-fourths of respondents saying they want it on their next vehicle. This tech, which automatically initiates charging and billing, has just six problems per 100 vehicles and a high satisfaction score of 8.89 out of 10.

Brand Innovation Ratings: Genesis And Hyundai On Top

《创世纪》成为创新的顶级品牌,both overall and in the premium category. If Tesla qualified for a ranking, however, it would have been higher. Genesis was followed by Cadillac, Lexus, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.

In the mass market category, Hyundai led the way and was followed by Kia, GMC, Ram, and Subaru. Mazda was ranked as the least innovative brand for new technologies, perhaps no surprise, as the Japanese automaker generallyprioritizes ergonomics and ease of useover the most advanced features.

The TXI Study also looked at 40 automotive technologies divided into four categories to determine which specific models are at the top. The categories are convenience, emerging automation, energy and sustainability, and infotainment and connectivity.

You can view the complete list of winners in the graphic below, but one worthy mention is theBMW iXfor its one-pedal driving. This ultra-advanced electric SUV was previously crowned the Tech Lover's Dream in the2021 edition of our CarBuzz awards. The Chevrolet Corvette and Toyota Sequoia were awarded for their ground-view camera technology, while the BMW 3 Series was recognized for its impressive augmented reality display. It's notable that only one of the nine individually awarded vehicles was an EV, clashing with the perception that EVs lead the way for advanced technologies.

"The perception in the industry is that most BEVs should offer many advanced technologies to compete with high-tech entrants like Tesla," said Kathleen Rizk, senior director of user experience benchmarking and technology at JD Power. "Success will be dependent on those manufacturers that can execute flawlessly while ensuring the user experience is the same for those who are tech-savvy and those who are not."
