Chery's Tech-Laden Electric Sedan Is Already Banned From The USA

The Luxeed electric sedan is the result of Huawei and Chery's shared efforts.

A new challenger from China is getting ready to battle theTesla Model 3and its electric sedan rivals. Known as the Luxeed, this handsome EV results from a collaboration between Chery and tech company Huawei. In case you don't remember, the Trump administration placed sanctions on Huawei, stopping it from importing parts from the USA. The Biden administration expanded on these sanctions, effectively banning all sales in the USA.

Yu Chengdong, Executive Director of Huawei and CEO of Terminal BG shared just one image of the svelte sedanvia Weibo, a Chinese social media website. Described as a "pure electric coupe," Chengdong notes it is the first vehicle from Huawei's smart car business that will use HarmonyOS 4.

"As a new category of smart car, it adopts a subversive design language and brings a coupe experience beyond imagination," he wrote before adding that it will be revealed in Q3 2023.

While good-looking, we wouldn't describe the Luxeed as original. The front end and the headlights, in particular, strongly resemble the Porsche Taycan. The side profile and greenhouse are reminiscent of the Lucid Air. Hopefully, we'll see some shots of the rear, providing us with a more comprehensive look at the Luxeed.

Overall, it has a decidedly premium air, helped by the minimalist chrome detailing, clean surfaces, flush-fitting door handles, and panoramic glass roof. We're not sure what the attachment on the roof is, but we're guessing it has something to do with aerodynamics or, failing that, the driver-assist systems.

According toCar News China, the Exceed is underpinned by Chery's E0X platform and uses CATL batteries that provide a claimed range of 700 km (435 miles). This was likelycalculated on the CLTC cycle, which usually provides highly inflated range figures compared to America's EPA standards.

The Luxeed will arrive with a sophisticated driver-assist system supported by Huawei ADS 2.0. This will be backed by 11 high-definition cameras, 12 ultrasonic radars, three millimeter-wave radars, and a LiDAR sensor. As per the report, the vehicle can drive up to 124 miles without intervention from the driver.

This works with the Navigation Cruise Assist (NCA), allowing the vehicle to take over driving duties on highways and cities. At launch, NCA will enable Luxeed owners to go hands-free in 45 cities in China, with plans to roll out to additional regions later.

Passengers will be kept entertained by the expansive infotainment system, which can support video games and more. The HarmonyOS 4 system makes use of Qualcomm's sophisticated 8295 chip. Moreover,Car News Chinaclaims owners can hook a quadcopter drone to the Luxeed and stream the video feed to the in-vehicle monitor.

As for pricing, the Luxeed is expected to come in at 200,000 Yuan (approx. $27,800). That would mean the new Chinese contender would undercut the Model 3 by a few thousand dollars, evenwith the appealing EV incentives.

Then again, the Model 3 is a superb electric vehicle that offers buyers almost everything they could want from an electric car. Iffy perceived build quality aside, it's a complete package and will only improvewith the upcoming facelift.

It's doubtful that the Luxeed will arrive in the United States, but seeing how it stacks up to the competition in other markets should be interesting. Those looking for an affordable electric sedan can look forward to the Volkswagen ID.7, whichwill arrive in late 2024as a 2025 model.
