Tesla Model 3 Facelift Spied With Redesigned Taillights

The prototype, known as Project Highland, was spied with modern-looking rear clusters.

Tesla is preparing to facelift the strong-sellingModel 3, updating the electric sedan with refreshed styling and new interior controls, among other things.

Recently, a Project Highland prototype was spotted cruising on a US highway, and the latest spy shot gives us our best look yet at the redesigned front end, replete with redesigned taillights. Tesla may ditch the generic design in favor of a boomerang-shaped cluster.

It's difficult to see but look closely, and you'll notice the body-colored panel on both sides of the red-colored lens. Then again, it could also be a clear lens, which suggests Tesla has repositioned the amber turn signal in a vertical indicator. The camouflage makes it tough to point out additional changes, but it appears the Model 3 will borrow the diffuser from its larger Model S sibling.

This should not only improve stability at high speeds but adding a diffuser may even improve the driving range. The current Model 3 can travel up to 333 miles on a single charge in Long Range guise.

一个nother feature expected on the facelifted Model 3 isthe touchscreen-operated gear selector. This widely criticized design first appeared on the larger Model X and Model S and did away with a physical stalk. Instead, the driver places the car into drive or reverse by swiping back or forth on the central touchscreen.

We're guessing Tesla is going down this route to cut costs, as it's far cheaper to embed the function into a screen than it is to equip vehicles with traditional controls.

Earlier this year, pictures of the Model 3's refreshed front end surfaced online. The images depicta Roadster-inspired fascia, with slimmer headlights and softened lines. However, these images could not be verified, so it's difficult to know whether this is the real deal.

Several reports indicate Tesla's smallest offering will receive new side mirrors and a redesigned interior, among other things. Tesla has kept everything covered up, with camouflage making it challenging to point out any changes. We'll have to wait until the official unveiling.

First introduced in 2017, the Model 3 has soldiered on for the last six years, largely unchanged, and has still managed tolure in scores of buyers. If Tesla can retain thelow pricing of the current lineupand pair it with the upcoming improvements, rivals may struggle to compete.
