汽车Mod Atrocities: Mazda MX-5 With Aston Martin Looks Is Bond On A Budget

For Sale /6 Comments

The name's Bond. Shames Bond.

This week's automotive mashup is none other than a 1993Mazda MX-5 Miatastyled to resemble an Aston Martin. Specifically, this Miata has shades of both the Aston Martin DB7 and theimpossibly cool V12 Vanquishin front, with its taillights resembling the latter more closely.

Listed onFacebook Marketplacefor $5,500, the seller of this particular Miata says that it has the AMX07 kit, one of just four kits like it that were imported into the United States. The kit is fashioned from fiberglass, and the seller claims that "all the panels and gaps were carefully lined up and finished by the previous owner."

This quirky Mazda's main talking point must be the decision to give it an Aston Martin makeover, yet it wouldn't be the first time these two disparate automakers had a connection of sorts.

Back in the 1990s, when the Aston Martin brand wasresuscitated by the DB7, that car inherited several components from other manufacturers to save costs. Bizarrely, the DB7's taillights came from the Mazda 323 F, the chrome door handles from a 323 Estate, and the turn signals from an MX-5. Besides this unexpected parts-sharing exercise, a Japanese tuning company alsogave an ND MX-5 a mini Vantage makeover, so the 1993 example here is not the first to use the British automaker as inspiration.

While some automotive mashups are the stuff of nightmares, this one at least has a definite cute factor. The downsized Aston grille and headlights somehow mesh together decently on the smaller Miata body. The proportions look appropriate, and the car still has the fun-loving personality of the original NA MX-5.

Equipped to this drop-top is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine from a 1994 MX-5. It had originally accumulated about 100,000 miles, but only 2,000 miles were added after the engine was rebuilt. The car also has a KYB AGX suspension, Flyin' Miata sway bars, new ceramic brakes and rotors, and new shifter bushings. Currently in Non-Op Registered status, the seller says the car drives and runs. Nothing much was said about the interior, but the all-black cabin seems to be in reasonable shape considering the car's age.

If you don't mind answering many, many questions about what on earth it is you're driving, and you have $5,500 to spend on a fun weekend runabout, this "Astonized" Miata could be the car mod atrocity (or accomplishment) for you.
