BMW X2 M35i Power Outputs And Acceleration Teased Before Tomorrow's Reveal

This is our best look yet at the new X2, which aims to be a mini XM in more ways than one.

BMW has teased the high-performance M35i variant of the newX2crossover that will be revealed tomorrow, announcing that it will peak at 296 horsepower and be capable of 0-62 mph in 5.4 seconds. This will be achieved with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Curiously, this is some 17 hp down on the mechanically related X1 M35i - perhaps Germany's version will be detuned compared to America's.

While BMW may have a strong reputation for performance, it is also known for embracing odd design choices, and this new X2 will be no different, taking clear styling inspiration from the hulkingBMW XMSUV.CarBuzzalready knew this would be the case since April this year when executives revealed that customers haveembraced unusual design choices, encouraging further pushing of the aesthetic envelope. Whether you and I like it or not, bizarre styling gets people talking, which turns into sales, and as a result, quirky designs are here to stay.

As the last teaser confirmed, the X2 will be the latest Bimmer to feature an illuminated kidney grille surround, and becauseBMW no longer sees an issuewith giving baby M cars like this X2 M35i the appearance of full-fat M cars, the crossover features a quartet of exhaust tips at the rear, housed within a gloss black faux diffuser panel. The mirrors are M-style, too, and there's a sharp tailgate spoiler for more visual drama.

Finally, the short teaser video reveals the design of the wheels, which enclose drilled brake discs with gray, not blue, M calipers. Thanks to spy shots taken over the last few months, we expect a bevy of M tricolor accents in the cabin, along with an expansive dual-display screen for infotainment and cluster duties.

The new crossover will officially break cover tomorrow morning at 6 PM Eastern Time, when we hope to learn pricing. For reference, the mechanically similar BMW X1 in M35i guise costs $49,900, while a fully loaded model can set you back as much as $60k. As the X2 is a little bigger and a little more premium, you can expect a bigger dent in your bank balance. This may be a stumbling block for those who owned the previous F39 generation that ended production last year, as that car was priced below $40,000, even in its most expensive form.

Hopefully, BMW will make enough enhancements to justify the inevitably steep increase. We'll let you know in the morning.
