It's The End Of The Road For The BMW M5...

But don't worry, it will return.

The2023 BMW M5is officially dead! Well, temporarily, that is. With the introduction of the next-generation2024 G60 5 Series and all-electric i5, it makes sense that the current F90 M5 would be put to pasture. The BMW USA website no longer lists the M5 as an available model.

"The M5 was removed from the configurator because July [2023] is the last production month and all production spots have been spoken for," a BMW spokesperson confirmed toCarBuzz.

BMW has already begun testing the next-generation M5 (codenamed G90), as evidenced by recentspy shots at the Nurburgring. The German automaker even teased a new wagonbody stylecalled the M5 Touring(codenamed G99), which is expected to arrive on our shores.

The next-generation M5 will be more powerful than the generation it replaces (duh), using an electrified powertrain that will likely feature the same plug-in hybrid system used by theXM Label Red. That vehicle produces a total of 738 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque from a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 and electric motor combination, and we see no reason why the M5 couldn't match or exceed those figures.

CarBuzzwas previously told that BMW M would not develop an engine for just one vehicle, hinting at the XM powertrainarriving in future models such as the M5. Of course, we may not get the 738-hp version right away, as it may come later in the production cycle, potentially as a Competition model.

BMW has not put out any official confirmation of when to expect the new M5. It's unclear if the sedan and wagon models will debut at the same time, considering the standard 5 Series Touring and i5 Touring have yet to be revealed. We could seeBMW making a splashat the Goodwood Festival of Speed next month, but it's also possible that the debut may not take place until later this year.

For now, customers who want an M5 will either have to find one in a dealer's inventory, buy a used one, or wait for the next generation to arrive.
