BMW M4 Vs. AMG C63: Which High-Powered German Droptop Comes Out On Top?

With the New York unveiling of the C63 Cabriolet, the M4 may have something to worry about.

The BMW M4 convertible has enjoyed anice reignof being the ultimate four-seat convertible. The Audi RS5 is a close competitor, but the aging A5 chassis and V8 engine can't really keep up with the turbocharged M4. But now Mercedes isfinally givingBMW a competitor with the C63 AMG Cabriolet. Revealed at the New York Auto Show and set to be released later this year, the droptop will come in two flavors. The standard version will have 469 horsepower from a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8.

The S also benefits from a higher top speed (174 mph compared to 155) as well as a faster 0-60 mph time (4.0 seconds vs. 4.1 seconds). Pricing has not been announced for the convertible C-Class, but the M4 convertible costs $8,000 more than the coupe, so expect a similar price bump. The C63 AMG will come with a traditional soft top rather than the M4's folding metal roof. While the metal roof gives coupe-like looks it does weigh more than a traditional soft top. The C63 convertible shares its gorgeous looks with the coupe and to our eye looks more mature than the M4.

The metal roof on the M4 looks a lot like the one from the old M3 convertible. This roof looks slightly awkward in the back, although the M4 looks pretty breathtaking with the roof down. Looks aside, (they are subjective), these two cars will be very close competitors. Neither car will likely be used on the track because that's what the lighter and quicker coupe versions are for. With that in mind, we think that the Mercedes will be the better car for showing your wealth and for having fun on the road. The M4 may be a more "precise drivers car," but the C63 will make a better sound thanks to its hand-built AMG V8. It is hard to go wrong with either car, but if it was our money, the Mercedes is the one we'd want in our driveway.

The M4 may be the sportier car, but when you are buying a convertible, does that really matter? Buying a convertible version of either of these cars tells the world that you want to go fast, but you probably aren't going to the race track. Of course both of these cars would be more than capable if pushed to the limit. However, the drivers of these cars probably just want to enjoy their daily commute to their office building with a crackling exhaust telling onlookers how successful they are.
