Now everyone in New York can see what makes the electric 'Stang so special.

The yellow New York taxi cab has to be one of the most famous forms of public transport in the world, and many manufacturers have had the privilege of being the vehicle of choice for New York cab drivers over the years. For years, the Ford Crown Victoria served as the car of choice, but these have been phased out in favor of newer models. As with the rest of the automotive world, the taxi industry is moving towards a greener future, and cars such as theFord Fusion Hybridhave become a popular choice. With the rise of the electric car, some New York cab drivers will now go full EV with theFord Mustang Mach-E.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E, which is getting somemajor updates for 2022, has proven to be anexcellent sellerfor Ford, and will now don the famous Rally Yellow paint job synonymous with New York taxis. The electric taxis are being operated by EV specialist Gravity, a company that focuses on EV fleets and charging infrastructure. This is the first time Ford's first-ever EV vehicle will be used in the taxi industry, and Gravity hopes to grow its fleet of EVs in the near future and include the popular Tesla Model Y. "I think the Mustang and the Model Y are kind of like the ideal taxi vehicles that are available today," Moshe Cohen, founder and CEO of Gravity, toldThe Verge.

The Tesla Model 3 became the first EV to receive approval by the city's Taxi and Limousine Commission back in 2019, and the Model Y has been cruising the streets of the Big Apple as part of a for-hire scheme by Revel for a good while now. Gravity's approach is more of a direct approach, as its Mustang Mach-E fleet will officially be a part of the City's cab fleet. This of course means that Gravity will need to deal with the taxi medallion system, a costly permit system that allows people to operate taxis in the lucrative New York industry. As far as charging the new EV taxis goes, Gravity operates its own charging station in downtown Manhattan which will supply the new taxis with 350 kW fast charging. This move signals the beginning of a great shift towards EVs in the taxi industry. The car rental space is alreadymoving in the same direction.
