2024 Toyota Hilux Coming With Hybrid Tech

The automaker claims the technology is capable of improving efficiency by 10 percent.

Toyota has a lot in store for its midsize pickup truck lineup; the next-generationTacomawill reportedly featurean i-Force Max hybridpowertrain. But the North American model is not the only Toyota pickup about to go hybrid, as the automaker has officially confirmed that the Hilux, the global midsize truck, will also use a mild-hybrid electric vehicle (MHEV) setup.

Toyota says the hybrid Hilux will initially arrive in Australia in the first half of 2024. It will have a 48-volt battery and a small electric motor generator, working with the current 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine, a 4x4 drivetrain system, and a 6-speed automatic gearbox. Toyota claims an approximately 10% improvement in fuel economy with this setup.

That will be made possible by the MHEV powertrain and a stop/start system to improve drivability and reduce NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness).

"This new technology will not only improve fuel consumption, but customers will also benefit from enhanced on and off-road performance, making the Hilux even more appealing for a weekend away or longer term excursion into the outback," said Sean Hanley, Toyota Australia Vice President for Sales, Marketing, and Franchise Operations.

The improvements on the Toyota Tacoma hybrid aren't too shabby either, which will beavailable on the new Trailhunterand TRD Pro trims.

Toyota promised the new Tacoma's i-Force Max hybrid, paired with a "powerful and efficient" 2.4-liter turbocharged four-pot gasoline engine, would produce a class-leading 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque.

Both hybrid pickup trucks should serve as a bridge to full electrification, which Toyota has already touched upon.

In 2021, Toyota and Lexus revealed16 EV concepts, one of which appeared a lot like therumored Tacoma EV. The automaker introduced aHilux-based EV pickupconcept in Thailand a year later.

A new age of electrified Toyota pickups appears to be upon us. But for now, we are looking forward to the new hybrid versions of the Tacoma and Hilux, expected to go on sale in their respective markets in early 2024.
